I think this is another misleading title. There is nothing easy about this book. It does not have an organized structure . The section oxygen saturation has nice graphics. Not enough cases. Difficult to read. On the whole I like the graphics.

A volume of case studies by Douglas, the former chief profiler at the FBI's legendary behavioral sciences unit, and Olshaker has become an annual event, from 1995's Mind Hunter to last year's Obsession. Here, the duo exhume the victims of Andrew Cunanan, Charles Whitman, Theodore Kaczynski and many others for insight into the killers' minds. Douglas's formula is deceptively simple: "WHY? + HOW? = WHO." But since serial killers are rarely caught through profiling, the formula is better expressed as "WHO + HOW = WHY." Douglas is tops in the field. He was among the first to suggest that the Atlanta child murderer was African-American, and he delivered a dead-on profile of Scottish mass-murderer Thomas Watt Hamilton on live TV based on preliminary news accounts. Still, most of what's here will be familiar to readers of other profiling books: the lonely white male with an obsessive sense of his own failure who tortured animals, wet his bed and played with matches as a child. Though Douglas promises to explain the differences among bombers, arsonists, shooters, cutters and stranglers, his profiles too often cleave to predictable, reductive formulations. Both Lee Harvey Oswald and Jack Ruby are characterized as "paranoid losers"; Timothy McVeigh is "a scrawny, pissed-off young hick." As always, Douglas and Olshaker deliver an entertaining read, but fewer case studies presented with more depth would better inform and educate the amateur profiler. (June)

Well Written dissection of motive with lots of case studies

Review: The Anatomy of Motive by nJohn Douglas and Mark Olshaker

“The Anatomy of Motive” by John Douglas and Mark Olshaker is a well written book, one of a series the authors have written on criminology. In this book they are outlining how to dissect a case based on psychological evidence pointing to the type of individual who committed the crime. It is at once educational in its scenario (case) presentation and fascinating in the detail the authors provide on famous and some not so famous cases, mostly from the last 75 years. Almost all of the cases they present are murder cases.

The authors are well qualified to do this, as they are retired from the FBI Quantico Unit and were often called in to help with cases from across the nation. Also they spent years interviewing imprisoned felons looking for patterns which they could apply and narrow the search for the perpetuator of hard to solve cases.

With the amount of detail the authors present, the book tends to be somewhat sensualistic. And that adds to the interest in reading the book. At spots the book is a gory read. And that adds to the interest in reading the book. But the book does succeed in presenting several principles to apply to solving hard to solve cases. The mere stating of the principles would be boring. But with the scenarios (cases) it succeeds in its educational purpose, and in maintaining the reader’s interest.

Unfortunately it has been several months since reading this, but my general impression was that it was informative. Its strength is the explanation of how psychological motive underlies, and differentiates, types of violent crimes. As any fan of Mr. Douglas expects, numerous fascinating case examples culled from his career solving violent crime illustrate the narrative. Recommended for students of human nature, psychology students or dilettantes, or any reader whose life philosophy is forewarned is forearmed.

Another Very Interesting Book by Mr. Douglas

I'm not here to write a long, elaborate review, plenty of people have already done this. I'm here simply to say: if, like me, you have a real passion for criminology then buy this book. This well-written book is full of great information and is, in my opinion, a must add to any serious collection. Is the book perfect ?? No, some people won't like how pretentious mr. Douglas can be at time, however nobody can deny that mr. Douglas is one of the most respected and credible True Crime author in the world, and because of that I think we should go beyond these flaws.

So if, like me, True crimes/Criminology is more than a passion for you, then buy this book, and for less than 10$ you won't regret it. :)

A good introduction without serious math

I checked this book out of my university library and was pleasently suprised, although this is by no means a comprehensive book for those who are taking a high level course on AI/neural nets it serves as a very good and complete introduction to those of us who wish to learn more about a very interesting area of computing. After an introduction and review of notation, several basic models are introduced starting with the TLU and progressively presenting more advanced models.
The book is not aimed towards computer science students, and also has in mind other backgrounds. It does however require a sufficient background in science/math (basic algebra and geometry, vectors).

Concise but explanatory

This is one of the best written books on NN. This book has that rare quality of being succinct but clearly written so that it can be understood by reasonably mathematical minded individual.

It covers most of the basic topics (back propagation, feed forward, Hopfield nets etc) and gives idiosyncrasies of the field. It also gives you a simple but accurate understanding of the mathematics and algorithms for the field.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone just entering into the field and has some mathematical background.

Just what I needed

This book got me started with neural networks. Prior to this book I had only read some articles and didn't quite know what was going on. Now I have an application that makes football predictions straight up. It does not go overboard with math but there are certainly some deep sections. Even if you are using someone else's neural network objects, this is a good read to help you understand the concepts behind NN and what type you want to use.
