Cowboy Bebop: Illustrations ~The Wind~

This is a high quality paperback book. It measures 9"(23cm) x 11 3/4"(30cm) x 1/2"(15mm) with 144 pages. I have rarely seen a paperback with a dust jacket before. It is printed on heavy glossy paper. Most pictures are color. The ones that aren't color never had any - pencil sketches and the like. It has sketches from when they were developing the characters (Originally Ed was a boy.) Most pages have comments from the artist with English translations. Most pictures are not just lifted from the show. There are many pictures I have never seen online. Two things I don't like are that sometimes the commentary is in the corners of the pictures and that some pictures span two pages. While these pictures look good that big, you have the spine of the book in the middle.

Of course, this book is only going to appeal to serious fans of the show, especially at this price. If you are such a fan you won't regret this purchase.

About the Author
Edward Morgan Forster (E. M. Forster) was an English novelist, short-story writer and essayist. Born in 1879, Forster is known for his examination of how class difference and hypocrisy in British society during the beginning of the twentieth century influenced personal connections. These themes are best represented in his novels A Room with a View, A Passage to India, and Howard s End. Forster died of a stroke in 1970 at the age of 91.

Dumming Down Literature

Apparently, Oxford books has decided that the way to make children enjoy reading is to butcher classic works of fiction. I can only imagine that they have made boatloads of money convincing public school systems around the world of the same thing idea, but frankly what they've done with "A Passage to India" and I can only imagine a whole series of great literary novels seems criminal. The answer to educating children is not to make good books shorter and stupider. If length or reading level is a problem, why doesn't a school just find a book they feel is more appropriate? Now, there's probably thousands of vacant-eyed students walking around discussing books that they have only read summaries of. This is exactly the kind of thing Ray Bradbury laments in "Fahrenheit 451", that novels should be turned into mere summary and ruined for future generations. The mere existence of this sad mockery of a book makes me sad for the future.

The book is very interesting. I enjoy reading this book. The story is about something wider than politics, about the search of the human race for a more lasting home, about the universe as embodied in the Indian earth and the Indian sky, about the horror lurking in the Marabar Caves...

I expected the complete Foster novel--disappointed it was "retold" and poorly so. It is a good story, but I was denied the greatness of the author's voice.

Essential Reading!

Having already read Dr. Pieri's Handbook on Tablighi Jamaat (which comes highly recommended), I was looking forward to the release of this book on Tablighi Jamaat and the attempts to construct their London "mega mosque". The book is comprehensive, insightful, scholarly and accessible. Pieri does a great job in outlining who TJ are, how the organization works, and tells us why this mosque is so important to the movement. The chapter also provides a detailed and in-depth ethnographic account of life in the TJ which is probably the best I have read on the movement. As well as this, he frames the debate in the wider discussion on how liberal democracies struggle to integrate illiberal and orthodox minorities and also draws on discussions relating to terrorism, securitzation, citizenship and Muslims in Europe. This book is a must read for anyone who wants a better understanding of Tablighi Jamaat and the ways in which Islamist movements attempt to adapt in western countries.

About the Author

James B. Worthen received his Ph.D. in experimental psychology from Texas Tech University. He held positions at Michigan Technological University and the University of Texas at Brownsville before joining the faculty at Southeastern Louisiana University where he is now Assistant Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. The bulk of his research has been devoted to understanding the mnemonic influence of bizarreness and distinctiveness.

R. Reed Hunt received his Ph.D. in experimental psychology from the University of New Mexico. Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Texas at San Antonio, he taught at Dartmouth College, Furman University, and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. His research has focused on human memory. He currently is Associate Editor of Memory and of the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition.

Very thorough and Quite Readable for those Interested in the Topic

I am very interested in memory in general and in mnemonics specifically, so I was happy to find a book like this. I found it very readable, with lots of info of course about mnemonics - more detail than you're likely to get from a typical pop-psychology book on mnemonics. These are researchers who know their stuff and who know the research. Excellent resource.

A beautiful struggle

This is a very rich guide to the ruins of Pompeii. The author is, without doubt, a scholar of distinction. The reconstructive drawings are second to none. The layout of the book is beautiful. However, as an introduction to the subject, the book is a struggle. The writing is often turgid, burdened with unnecessary archaeological terminology: The hip bone is connected to the peristyle, the peristyle is connected to the pronaos, the pronaos is connected to the portico, the chalcidicum is connected to the knee bone.... The glossary at the end of the book is hopelessly inadequate - a mere afterthought. The publishers would do well to study the DK Pulishing model and invest the book with a few introductory pages explaining the vast terminology employed throughout the work with architectural diagrams and arrows. It might then be a masterpiece.

About the Author
Robert P. Yagelski is Associate Vice Provost and Director of the Program in Writing and Critical Inquiry and Professor of English Education in the Department of Educational Theory and Practice at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Albany. He also teaches courses at SUNY-Albany in writing, composition theory and pedagogy, critical pedagogy, and qualitative research methods and helps prepare secondary school teachers. Considered a leading voice in composition theory, Professor Yagelski is widely published in the major journals in the field. He is also director of the Capital District Writing Project, a site of the National Writing Project, and former director of the SUNY-Albany Writing Center. He earned his Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition from The Ohio State University.
