That major historical moments affect a language's development seems to be self-evident. But in the case of French, as Canadian authors Nadeau and Barlow (Sixty Million Frenchmen Can't Be Wrong) exhaustively illustrate, this notion shouldn't be taken for granted, since an insistence on linguistic purity influences how French is taught, spoken and written. What began as a loose confederation of local dialects became mired in a particularly French obsession with linguistic propriety. Despite the natural development of French over time, "[in] the back of any francophone's mind is the idea that an ideal, pure French exists somewhere." Nadeau and Barlow traveled the world to research what they call "the mental universe of French speakers" from its center in France to such places as Canada, Senegal and Israel. "French carries with it a vision of the State and of political values, a particular set of cultural standards," the authors write. They have managed to corral what could be an ungainly subject—both the history and the present day—in a clearly written, well-organized approach to the lingua franca of millions of people. Nadeau and Barlow's history of French is chockablock with these sorts of intriguing facts about the language and its evolution (contrary to common belief, English was a major influence on French, not the other way around). Being native French I have enjoyed this book enormously

Being native French I have enjoyed this book enormously. Well researched, well documented and well written. A trove of interesting facts, particularly if you have studied Latin for 6 years, ancient Greek for 4 years and are French-English bilingual. The evolution of the language is nothing short of fascinating.

I had read one of the previous books by these authors, on France the country, and learned from it immensely. This book is as good, if not better: thorough to a fault, balanced to a fault, not afraid to state the truth or to offer a reasoned judgement. It is not an etymological study, like those available for English, but rather an examination of where French came from, how it developed and spread and the state of the language today. Detailed examination of French "outremer" (overseas), especially in Quebec and West Africa. Oh, yes, it's also very funny!

This was a second purchase as I lost my first copy. I found this book absolutely fascinating the first time around, and the second read was an enjoyable review.

Highly recommended for anyone interested in the history of languages. I especially found interesting the close relationship between French and modern English. Very readable.

Beginning with the accession of the emperor Diocletian, this book presents a historical survey of the Roman Empire in Late Antiquity, from AD 284 to 641. The historical origins of medieval and modern Europe and of the Islamic world can be traced back to this period, during which the Roman Empire underwent huge political and religious transformations.

This volume contains a substantial narrative of political and military events, highlighting major episodes such as the conversion of Constantine, the creation in the East of the pious Christian state, and the resurgence of Roman ambition under the emperor Justinian. In a group of thematic chapters, the book considers the nature of the late Roman state, the emergence and character of the western barbarian kingdoms, the epochal religious changes of late antiquity, and major aspects of economy and society. The final chapters address the decline of the empire by examining the period between the outbreak of the Great Plague of 542 and the eclipse of Roman power in the Near East in the seventh century, resulting from a final great war with the Persian Empire and the emerging power of Islam among the Arabs.

Chronological tables, maps, and charts of important information are included to help orient the reader, and a bibliographical survey supports further study and research.

Compilation not History

This is a carefully documented, but otherwise undistinguished history of Roman Empire from the accession of Diocletian (284 CE) to the death of Heraclius (641 CE). It is of course important to carefully document all the sources used in compiling a history, but it is equally important to develop an effective scheme to organize and analyze those sources based on some sort of unifying theory or theme. That is the difference between a compilation of events and a history.

The Roman Republic and then Empire, as with all nation states, under went a more or less continuous evolution from the foundation of Rome to the fall of Constantinople in 1453 (CE). During the calamitous Third Century this evolution was especially profound and rapid. When Diocletian assumed the imperial purple the empire was vastly different from the time of Caesar Augustus and even from the time Marcus Aurelius Commodus (180-192 CE). Diocletian was a reforming emperor who tried to stabilize the empire and the way it was governed. He realigned administrative boundaries often codifying changes that occurred during the breakdowns of the Third Century and tried to stabilize the economy by various methods including creating bans on changing jobs. In this history Mitchell alludes to this only vaguely and only in the middle of the book does he even mention that the Third Century was a time of evolution. In the same manner, one would never know from this history the later Roman Empire was considerably more than a continuation of the earlier Roman Empire.

Mitchell appears unable to identify linkages, note significant changes, or prioritize the information he presents. For example had he compared the Roman Army of Marcus Aurelius Antoinus (161-180 CE) with Notia Dignitatum which he mentions at least twice he would have discovered that the Roman Army had evolved into a very different entity than Gallo-Roman legionaries of the earlier empire. This is not a trivial quibble, but goes to the heart of Roman-Barbarian relations in the later Empire. Indeed the erosion of the capabilities of the Western Roman Army declined precipitously after inflicting a serous defeat on the Goths at the Frigidus River in 394 CE. This decline made the Western half of the Empire open to the out right take over of Roman territory by various barbarian groups. This inability to conceptualize patterns and trends prevails though out the book.

balanced and informed

I must emphasize that I have not read the Kindle version of this essay, only the hard copy, but it is exceptional to the point that it deserves comment.

The eponymous "great expectations" of an "angry nation" are identified but Tingle does not dwell upon them. Many Australians already get it - they are irked at a growing focus on personal wealth and comfort, accompanied by a snarling intolerance of social diversity. This `dumbing down' is best exemplified by the pursuit of smaller government and lower taxation on the one hand, and an expectation that government will resolve all societal ills, including the funding of age retirement, on the other. Tingle examines the nature of Australian governments back to the first fleet, casting into relief their balance between leadership and citizen autonomy, between long term policy and electoral reactivity, and between themselves and their predecessors. This analysis, compressed into 60 odd pages, is as good as it gets. Tingle draws well from the literature and her grasp of Australian history is refreshingly to the point.

Tingle is even-handed in her critique. Brevity may have inclined her to don Do Bono's black hat to the point that the some leaders' achievements beyond the economy are barely touched on, such as inspired indigenous reforms or more enlightened understandings of Australia's place in the world, but balance is retained. At the beginning, she frames her question around a personal visit to a well-known retired politician, one whose reputation has mellowed since politics and with whom Tingle claims a degree of empathy. While this visit frames the question of `expectations', perhaps it is the softener before the killer punch her analysis delivers.

An excellent book (at 25,000 words, I consider it a little long to be referred to as an essay) about a problem that I can relate to because of similar experiences in my day job as an engineer. I'll be recommending it to my MPs. As a result of reading this booklet, I will now be exploring the other "Quarterly Essays".

Awesome!

Years ago I began looking for powerful images that depict the life of faith for use in worship in our small Vermont Church. Frequently I found individual works by James Tissot, and curious to find more I began to explore books and the internet. To my disappointment there were very few books containing more than a few of Tissot's stunning paintings, and I discovered that his works had not been on display in any significant number for many years. So I was extremely excited to discover the exhibit of more than 100 of his illustrations at the Brooklyn Museum.

Saturday October 24th my wife and I went to view the exhibit of Tissot's Life of Christ organized by Judith Dolkart. Never have I witnessed a more moving and thoughtful portrayal of Jesus birth, ministry, passion and resurrection. The descriptions with each work were exceptional, briefly telling the story illustrated, exploring the paintings, reflecting on the artist's process as explained in his own commentaries. I would urge anyone interested in the life of Jesus to come and spend a couple of hours. Take your time and read the stories, look into the paintings,and search your heart. Mine was deeply moved. I can see why people at the original exhibitions of these works wept before them. My profound thanks to the Brooklyn Museum and to Judith Dolkart! Now for the exhibit catalog! This stunningly beautiful 302 page treasure is alive with with high quality full color reproductions of the paintings about half the size of the originals. The end papers of the book are huge and dramatic depictions of Jerusalem. Each section features a breathtaking full page detail of one of the paintings.

Exhibit Curator Judith Dolkart and David Morgan from Duke University provide intriguing articles about Tissot's life journey, his process for creating this series, the interesting role of this collection in the growth and development of the Brooklyn Museum, and the chapter in American Religious life created by Tissot's Bible. I expect to spend many hours savoring the prints and exploring the story told so richly by each painting.

Are there limitations to Tissot's effort to capture the Bible as it happened? Of course. Yet for anyone wanting to explore the life of Jesus imaginatively and emotionally in its beauty and courage, richness and depth, traveling the pilgrimage in this book will be a profound blessing! The quality images of Tissot's extensive New Testament works from cover to cover make this book a gem!

complete series of 350 paintings with essays

James Tissot (1833-1902) was a nineteenth-century French painter who for the first part of his career had a reputation as a "French society painter [whose subjects were] the costumes and manners, occupations and pleasures of the French capital's elegantes." This all changed in the early 1890s when Tissot renewed his ties to the Catholicism of his youth after experiencing a vision during a Mass when the priest raised the host. For the rest of his life, he devoted himself to the series of religious paintings numbering in the hundreds given here. Tissot's lasting reputation rests on this series The Life of Christ on all periods of Jesus Christ's life from the Annunciation to the Resurrection.

Books reproducing this series were published in France and the United States. In 1900 after a tour in the U.S., the complete series came into the possession of the Brooklyn Museum.

Tissot's paintings were popular not only for their religious subject coinciding with a rise in religious feelings and interests in late Victorian-era America and pre-World War I Europe, but also for their straightforward style. The paintings are in an illustration style; similar to ones seen in periodicals and illustrated books of the period. They reflect no inklings of impressionism or any of the other budding modern art styles of Tissot's day. One sees in them some harbingers of the art of N. C. Wyeth and other illustrators of the following decades. In Tissot's paintings though one occasionally sees symbols such as pale, ghostly hands reaching across a pool of water or dark wings for Satan; and occasionally an aura around Jesus's head. But the effects of the paintings are mostly in the coloration creating mood, poses (often dramatic) of the central figures, and the setting of the scene as if in a play.

An appreciative and enthusiastic public was attracted to Tissot's paintings by their details of "landscape, architecture, vegetation, costumes, and customs of the Holy Land." This gave the paintings an exotic appearance arousing curiosity and myriad points of interest with their evocation of spirituality.

Tissot's aim was to "revivify the imagination of modern Europeans and Americans by depicting the life of Jesus in scenes that departed from visual conventions, but not entirely." The sheer number of paintings picturing incidents from the life of Christ and also related Holy Land scenes and figures was a visual biography which was as educating as it was visually engaging. With the hundreds of paintings grouped into major parts of the life of Christ (e. g., The Ministry, The Passion) mostly two to a page, today's readers can have the same experience. Essays preceding the sections of paintings go into the social context making Tissot's project such a sensation in its day and also how it was eventually acquired despite some opposition on financial and religious grounds by the Brooklyn museum.

About the Author

Gary Rockswold has been a professor and teacher of mathematics, computer science, astronomy, and physical science for over 35 years. He has taught not only at the undergraduate and graduate college levels, but he has also taught middle school, high school, vocational school, and adult education. He received his BA degree with majors in mathematics and physics from St. Olaf College and his Ph.D. in applied mathematics from Iowa State University. He has been a principal investigator at the Minnesota Supercomputer Institute, publishing research articles in numerical analysis and parallel processing and is currently an emeritus professor of mathematics at Minnesota State University, Mankato. He is an author for Pearson Education and has over 10 current textbooks at the developmental and precalculus levels. His developmental coauthor and friend is Terry Krieger. They have been working together for over a decade. Making mathematics meaningful for students and professing the power of mathematics are special passions for Gary. In his spare time he enjoys sailing, doing yoga, and spending time with his family.

Terry Krieger has taught mathematics for 18 years at the middle school, high school, vocational, community college and university levels. His undergraduate degree in secondary education is from Bemidji State University in Minnesota, where he graduated summa cum laude. He received his MA in mathematics from Minnesota State University - Mankato. In addition to his teaching experience in the United States, Terry has taught mathematics in Tasmania, Australia and in a rural school in Swaziland, Africa, where he served as a Peace Corps volunteer. Terry is currently teaching at Rochester Community and Technical College in Rochester, Minnesota. He has been involved with various aspects of mathematics textbook publication for more than 14 years and has joined his friend Gary Rockswold as coauthor of a developmental math series published by Pearson Education. In his free time, Terry enjoys spending time with his wife and two boys, physical fitness, wilderness camping, and trout fishing.

Good info -- will appeal to many different kinds of practitioners

Susan Pesznecker is one of my favorite authors. Her treatment of "magickal" subjects is both scholarly and accessible, based on real research rather than wishful thinking. "A Magickal Retreat" will appeal to readers from every point of the metaphysical spectrum, from those who follow the ancient traditions to the modern cybermage.

A spiritual retreat is about the journey -- where you go and how you choose to get there is up to you. While her writing is from a Natural Pagan/Modern Druid perspective, Pesznecker provides thorough instruction and encouragement to those who wish to seek and recognize the personal landmarks on their own paths, whatever they may be.

Excellent for planning a focused, magickal retreat or study vacation

When I initially bought this book it was with the intention of planning a couples retreat for five days in the forest. I didn't know where to start and even though I had several books I could resort too, I really wanted it all in one reference guide. The Magickal Retreat came to the rescue!

This book is definitely an all-in-one resource guide because there are a lot of areas where she poses things for you to think about and writing activities for you to plan out your own unique journey for special-me time. In the beginning, she helps you define your goals, reminds you that time frames are important and how to hone your retreat to be very focused. Her questions can be a conversation starter with yourself, your significant other, or even with a small group as to what you want to achieve with your retreat.

One aspect this book provides which I really liked was the examples of a themed retreat. For example, a retreat for home arts, or green magick, or psychic arts, and even one for technological magick are just a few scenarios she gives. While I didn't follow these examples for my own creation, seeing how a person might develop their own retreat holiday definitely provided me with help in seeing how to put together my own plans. The book includes a recommended reading section, some basic sample blessings and rituals, and blank formatted pages you can copy and use as worksheets.

Some people may not like the idea of planning ahead, but since we would be without phone, internet and would not be leaving the isolated cabin for five days, a basic framework needed to be put together. For example, we would not have access to a restaurant so I needed to plan on meals and groceries. We would be working with the elements and I knew there would be certain days best suited for that work. There would also be certain days of the week and their significance I wanted placed in our schedule.

Because I have facilitated workshops myself, I really appreciated how Pesznecker encouraged you to lay out a schedule that could be changed or adapted as you went through the week. After all some plans don't work out - or may need to be dropped altogether. Very helpful was the section on how to record your retreat and how to adapt back into the "real" world when you return, something often left out.

While I may have been able to think all this out for myself - given enough time and resources - what I really wanted was a guide to take me through all the ideas in my head. We were planning a couples retreat (not an individual one and the book can be adapted for this), but I hadn't really given a lot of thought to the days of the week correspondences, the time of the day correspondences, or even how we would start and end our week.

This book brings you to a mindful place where you will consider all of the above and more - and start to see how each planned day (loosely - not set in stone) is almost planning a ceremony. In this case it is a ceremony to celebrate you!

If you have never done a retreat, or would like ideas on how to better construct your next one, I highly recommend this book. While it is geared towards an individual, I was successful in using it to plan for two. It also is open-ended to faith so it adaptable to where you want to take it.
