One of the things encourages me on my journey to consistent profitability is hearing other people's stories of struggle and success in the market. Yvan Byeajee's 'Zero to Hero: How I Went from Being a Losing Trader to a Consistently Profitable One' is both inspiring and instructive. Staring with inspiring on p. 47, Yvan wrote:

"I find my purpose by writing and helping other traders not merely survive, but make real changes in their trading because I know success in trading is possible for anyone. I am a living proof that anyone can do this. I don‘t have anything extraordinary - I don‘t possess any special talent. I am just a regular guy who didn‘t give up."

The instructive part came by hearing how he gained success in the market. Yvan's method of overcoming his shortcomings in the market was through meditation. His endorsement about meditation certainly made me consider the its benefits in trading. Overall, it was a quick read but packed with inspiration and encouragement.

I am known as the Simon Cowell of Book Reviews, so when I give a positive review people sit up and take notice. And this is going to be a positive review. To sum it up, this book was... stunning. It is extremely well written, intelligent, and insightful. I was amazed at how well the author presented the material. For a while I thought this can't be an individual author that wrote this because it is so impressive.

This is not a book about a trading strategy. It is a book about finding yourself, your true self through all of the clutter in your mind. It's that clutter, which encompasses and brackets many forms within you, and that is what is preventing you from success not only in trading, but in life.

It might appear this book is just about meditation and one might think you can just read about meditation anywhere else. That is not true. The author is so great at presenting the material in this book that it is absolutely unique.

Get this book. Read it. Think about it. Practice it. And then read it again. I am planning on reading this over and over - probably for the rest of my life. It is that good. To Mr. Byeajee - well done, very well done.

Open-minded and doesn't shove things down your throat.

Mr Cooper writes well. His style would appeal to the scientist and those who feel there should be a rational, logical approach to things, rather than a cloak-and-dagger mystical necessity which would just be silly mumbo jumbo (as the author often calls it). Before opening this book, you'll cower and hide it as if it were a copy of Penthouse! Amazingly, it reveals itself to be as 'respectable' as a book by Freud or Einstein. As a physician, I must confess, I was surprised. More importantly, and almost reluctantly, I have to say that not reading this book and dying would almost be a tragic pity.

this book is for the magician who can think for his/herself.if you are looking for a book of spells and rituals you will be disappointed and you shouldn't buy this book.it breaks magick down into into a simple ,useable practice.the strength of this book lies in it's logical,scientific approach.most importantly the author teaches you how to harness your own personal powers to affect change in your life.The author Phillip Cooper has been critcized for being "aloof" and "arrogant",but i don't find this to be the case.When one is an expert in any field,as Mr. cooper is you are confident in your knowledge and you are passionate about it,and unfortunately this sometimes becomes misinterpreted as arrongance.If you are new to magick, or even an old hand at it get this book and learn from someone who actually knows what he's talking about.

Magick Without Superstition

Phillip Cooper has been one of my favorite occult authors for a number of years now, and I have been waiting to write a review of one of his works in order to clear up many misconceptions that pepper his reviews. First I'm going to give a review of the work in question, and then move on to answering some of the criticisms against him.

"Basic Magick" is that, and more. Of all Cooper's works, save for maybe "The Magician" which is out of print, this book is his most complete. It focuses on what Mr. Cooper makes as the foundation of his entire magical practice - right beliefs. Cooper is one of the newer generation of magicians in that he approaches magic from an almost "New Thought" perspective. He puts strong emphasis on positive thinking, imaging, belief, and repetition of rituals. These themes and many of the initial practices in the book run throughout all of the Cooper's other books. For example, the Cosmic Ring exercise, which works as a slightly more advanced version of the Golden Dawn's Kabbalistic Cross minus the Hebrew words and the Lord's Prayer, is repeated in every one of his books; as is the basic structure of the opening of the four elemental gateways. The particulars of the presentation of these rituals sometimes differ slightly from work to work, but this is because Cooper puts a powerful emphasis on working out one's own system of magick using the basic structural and symbolic tools he presents to the reader. He insists that it is not his job to create a personal system of magic that works for each individual. That is their own responsibility, he only tries to give clear and effective techniques.

Beyond the basics of the system (the Cosmic Ring, the Inner Temple, the Four Elemental Gateways, and the Pool), Cooper introduces the reader to a magical system of symbology based on the planets. This is were "Basic Magick" takes off from the author's other works. The planetary system is simple, but encompassing, and appears to be something of practical use to anyone interested in side-stepping the more traditional, esoteric and judeo-christian stamps of such systems as the Golden Dawn or the classical Grimiores. The system is based on the kabbalah, but not to such an extent that one must learn ancient Hebrew or memorize 777. All of the correspondences given are clear, and straightforward with enough substance to inspire one to expand the lists based upon his or her own work and life experience.

This is where Cooper really shines, in my opinion. He does in fact give very basic outlines of what is necessary in modern approaches to magick. From the foundation he builds one is free to go in any direction one is interested in, as Cooper himself does in his other works on Candle Magick, and Sigil Magick. But this is also where many people get offended. Since Cooper is confident that he has found the most basic underlying structure to most magickal rituals, readers often see him as arrogant. When he uses the word Truth, they get turned off. But I think a careful read with an open mind will make it clear that what he means by Truth isn't so arrogant as it is useful.

But what Cooper does come down hard on is the superstition that has attached itself to magick for so long. He is NOT of the religious bent, be it Judeo-Christian or Eastern/Karmic school of thought. He views magick as a scientific, ultimately practical, and universal approach to reality. He does believe in God, though in a personal version of God that each individual must approach on his or her own. He doesn't believe that one should accept dogmatic symbolic systems from others, that is why his system is so universal and symbol-simple.

All in all, I think Cooper breathes fresh air into the stagnant Wiccan/Golden-Dawn/Crowley magickal field - fresh air and a strong whiff of common sense.

There are so many grammatical errors in this book that I was too focused on the author’s misuse/abuse of the English language to pay attention to the actual content. Here are a few examples:

Location 140: …is easily being through out the window.
Location 174: …the process is becoming even more simpler, and will continue to do so.
Location 198: …the innovations of technology is putting a stop on traditional methods…
Location 199: Companies such as Lending Club and Prosper specializes in peer to peer…
Location 234:… the options has never been as open…
Location 242:… is a difficulty tons of people have had issues with. [seriously, "tons" of people???]
Location 243:… Platforms such as TransferWise has radically changed…

Very useful guide for beginners in FinTech

Financial technology is something I don't know anything about, but I know enough to see that it is something worth learning about.
This book is perfect for someone like me. It explains everything about it, the history, uses, dangers and what will it be like in the future. It is well-written for a beginner like me, understandable and patiently paced. I feel like I got a lot from it and I can only recommend it to anyone even slightly interested in the subject. Good book.

Very elementary, partially wrong, and terribly written

I am an attorney who works in banking regulation and who routinely works with fintech issues. This book is horrible. The author clearly does not understand how banking works or how the fintech industry operates. All of the information in the book is extremely basic, and some of it is wrong. The writing is also curiously bad, I would put it at a
middle school level. The grammar errors make me question if there was an editor.
This book will just confuse you about the real challenges and potential facing the fintech industry. Avoid it.

I can recommend this book as a good way to learn and review sed. It completely covers GNU sed, with many examples. I hope that this book is well received. The effort put in by the author, and the high quality of the result, surely deserve that.

"Definitive Guide to sed" seems like a great way to learn sed. It's a reference / tutorial that's straightforward and to the point. The book has clear descriptions of every sed feature. It's systematic and organized, and written in a flowing style that takes most of the pain out of learning a somewhat complex topic. "Definitive Guide to sed" is highly recommended.

Why bother with sed?

That's the first question that popped into my head when I saw this book.

Here's the funny thing, though: I DO use sed. Maybe not every day, but I doubt a week goes by that I don't use sed for something.

I don't use sed for anything complicated; for that I'd turn to Perl. I'd say that's a concept the author agrees with (though some of the examples in this book would cause me to start editing a Perl script instantly).

Let's get the praise out of the way first: this is the clearest and easiest to understand treatment of sed I have ever read. I can well remember my initial befuddlement from the sed "man" page thirty years ago and not feeling all that much more enlightened by O'Reilly's "Sed & Awk" quite a few years later. This book would have served me better.

But instead I learned Perl. Yet, because I knew how to do the simpler tasks in sed, those stuck with me. Perl can do the same sort of simple command line things, but I never learned that sytax because I had sed! I have to wonder: had I become more proficient with sed and awk, would I have taken up Perl so early?

I'm not sure that I can answer that question. I have an opinion that it's better to know all of it - sed, awk, Perl, vi, emacs, whatever: you never know what you might need to do and under what conditions you need to do it. I've been on systems where Perl was not installed or was broken; it was certainly helpful to have fall-back tools - clumsy as my scripts were, they did the job.

So - very well done. I'm not sure how many people will bother with it, but those that do will get their money's worth.

An excellent introduction to sed

This text provides an excellent coverage of GNU sed. I'd also recommend O'Reilly's sed&awk, but whereas that one focuses on POSIX sed, this text covers the GNU version, which is what most people are going to be using. GNU introduces a few new options and instructions that are not in POSIX and this book discusses those as well. Simple examples are provided for every concept discussed.

Best sed reference I've seen

Learning sed has always been a frustrating task, and I think that has been at least partially due to the lack of good references on the subject out there. Well, this book book seems to have solved that problem.

The author does a great job in covering all aspects of sed, and lays out the book in a well organized way. The best part of the book however is all of the examples the author uses. The author doesn't simply tell you how to use sed. He shows you, using numerous examples every step of the way. As someone who learns best by doing, this book had me using some of sed's advanced features in no time.

I'd recommend this book to anyone looking to learn sed, from experienced sed users who want to master its advanced features to people who have never used the tool before.
