This book is wonderful! Its humor is made no less by the (very appropriate) frequent references to bodily fluids and functions. The facts are very interesting and almost shocking at times, even to well-educated adults. Great read!

About the Author
Will Jordan initially wanted to be an actor and while working as an extra, he was cast as a World War II soldier in a feature film. After being put through military bootcamp and taught how to handle weapons for his role, he decided to do further research and soon fell in love with works of military history. He then turned his hand to writing and, in order to shape his first thriller, visited weapon ranges all over America and eastern Europe, becoming something of an arms expert.

A great military thriller...

Sacrifice sees the return to action of Ryan Drake- our tough guy hero with the soft centre- in another fast-paced adventure to satisfy any fan of the military or conspiracy thriller. Opening with the spectacular shooting down of a helicopter in war torn Afghanistan, ferrying a particularly important American operative, Drake and his team are despatched to deal with the aftermath and to track down the missing agent kidnapped from the crash site. It soon becomes clear to Drake and his team that shady forces are at work and that this mission is nowhere near as straightforward as it seems, leading to some pretty impressive altercations and an adrenaline fuelled race for the truth...

Once again, Jordan thrusts the reader straight into the harsh terrain and bleak surroundings of an active war-zone, perfectly capturing the heat and starkness of Afghanistan. As in Redemption, Jordan never allows the reader to lose sight of the location and atmosphere which underpins the action throughout. Likewise, the same level of detail regarding the actions of the Army and Black-Ops outfits is absolutely perfect, and Jordan's inherent knowledge of military hardware pepper the story educating the reader but without becoming too know-it-all, while other writers in this genre find this a difficult balance to achieve. As regards plotting, the story unfolds at a pace and I liked the setting up of Drake against a former nemesis and also the reappearance of a rather striking character from the first book that unsettles our hero. Although the plot plays out in a rather similar way to the first book, this didn't overly concern me as having read many McNabs and Ryans, there is a distinct similarity generally in this genre, but Jordan has an added weapon in his arsenal...

I think what sets Jordan apart from his military thriller counterparts, is that not only does he have a charismatic but utterly focused professional soldier as his central character, who is appealing to both genders, but that once again there is a brilliant balance with female characters who pack a punch, but do not become overly stereotyped. There are three such characters in this book, who not only provide a good foil to their macho counterparts, but are well drawn enough that their characters are balanced between their professional or rogue roles, while still retaining their essential sense of femininity alongside their kick-ass doggedness. In my wide reading of this genre, I have not encountered a male author yet with such convincing female characters who does not resort to stereotypes, so thumbs up for Jordan on that one!

Another assured book in this compelling series then, with thrills, spills and skulduggery at the highest levels of the US security departments. Packed with high-octane action scenes and perfectly placed militaristic detail there is much to entertain any reader of this genre. Only question is- what will Ryan Drake become embroiled in next?

Great book with lots of action.

This book was great. The author has a lot going for him. His first book in the series, Redemption, was good but this is even better. What makes this author good is his ability to describe things in such a way that you can actually picture that location. In this book his description of Afghanistan really made you feel like you could see through his eyes. He is also great at describing action and battle scenes. I have read a lot of action thrillers but his descriptions are some of the best I have run across. He is also not afraid of losing characters, and in doing so, you feel emotional about the loss. This guy really knows how to write and I appreciate is style.

I loved this dries. I actually started with the 3rd book not knowing this was a series. I then went back and read 1 and 2. All 3 were great! They are riveting, suspenseful and you just don't want to put them down. I really felt like I was right there living the action with them. I would hight recommend all 3 of the Ryan Drake series.

Compelling case to leave Islam and its mentally-disturbed prophet

Using Islam's own sacred texts and history, Sujit Das paints a detailed picture of a self-appointed prophet who concocted a religion to justify his greed, disdain for women who he equated with domestic animals, and his narcissistic paranoia against his many imaginary enemies. So fragile was his religious construct that Muhammad had to continually rewrite the script, introducing the whole concept of abrogation. Not only did the prophet leave behind a half-built institution with no leadership structure, but the surviving Muslims fought for years to escape from the grip of the cult. So strong is the paranoia that Muslims even wage civil wars against fellow Muslims over the slightest differences in belief and practice, following Muhammad's own paranoiac destruction of the "mosque of dissent" (Surah 9:107) Today's Muslims have absorbed Muhammad's narcissistic lust for power and domination through the sacred works, creating a world inhabited by little Muhammad's driven to carry on his evil mission. Concludes Mr. Das, "A poisonous tree produces poisonous fruits."

It would be hard to imagine that a thinking Muslim could read this comprehensive analysis of the origins and manifestation of Islam without having a strong desire to leave Islam and everything associated with it. This book is not a "anti-Muslim hate book," but rather a well-developed case to strengthen the Muslims' resolve to leave Islam.

Sujit Das Dismantles Islam & Stomps on its Pieces

Sujit Das has written an amazing work. This book puts the Quran, the life of Muhammad, & various hadiths under a microscope and presents argument after argument (armed with reason, facts, and logic); completely dismantling the legitimacy and prophetic claims of Islam.

Furthermore I have never read a more apt psychological analysis of why Muhammad did all the horrible things he did. In chapter 3, Sujit Das explains how Muhammad's erratic actions & words make sense when attributed to the condition of malignant narcissism.

Although this book is a worthy read, there are grammatical errors on almost every page and this is certainly distracting. Furthermore, this is a very comprehensive work and sometimes a very long read (and that's certainly not an entirely bad thing).

All in all, this is a great work. If one wants to further understand the psychosis of Arabia's most famous prophet, then this book is definitely worth your time.

If you are looking for well researched and referenced material about Muhammad and Islam, this book explains things VERY well at a level that even I could comprehend. Questions that were answered for me as well as many others; Why do Muslims stay with Islam? How can they "believe" much of the crap in the Qu'ran? How was the "sick" Muhammad able to convince his initial followers?.

This book is well written. Front cover is appropriate and appealing. I gained information on the different roles of therapists, psychologists, etc. Very informative, many topics covered in the book I was not familiar with.

The Dead Sea Scrolls comprise the oldest collection of biblical documents ever discovered. Of the Dead Sea Scrolls, none has baffled experts more than the Copper Scroll, discovered in 1952 by a team of Bedouin led by Henri de Contenson of the École Biblique in East Jerusalem. Appearing to be a list of buried treasure engraved on copper pieces, the Copper Scroll has long been considered to be the work of a devout, secretive Jewish sect, the Essenes, who lived by the Dead Sea around the time of Jesus. Metallurgist Robert Feather demonstrates, however, that the weights and numbering systems used in the Copper Scroll are actually Egyptian in origin. He further shows how Greek characters inserted into the text of the Copper Scroll make clear references to the Egyptian pharaoh Akhenaten.

Feather’s findings support theories that the original priests of Akhenaten continued to pass on his religious teachings of monotheism and that those teachings directly impacted the theological evolution of ancient Judaism. Decoded, the Copper Scroll also indicates the existence of a completely independent sect of pious Hebrew priests that preserved the original practices of Ahkenaten-influenced Judaism.

This fascinating study takes the reader on a journey from ancient Mesopotamia, through Canaan, into Egypt, and back to the shores of the Dead Sea in order to explore the wide-reaching implications of the Copper Scroll. The author suggests the locations of most of the treasures listed on the scroll; explores further links between the Essenes of Qumran and other Jewish sects, such as the Ethiopian Jews; and provides a fresh understanding of the origins of monotheism--the basis of the three great religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

Greatest Treasure Hunt

If you're the type of person who likes a good treasure hunt, than this is the book for you. Robert Feather has compiled a wealth of information about Egypt and the Holy lands in a nutshell. This book is valuable for both legitimate archaeological research organizations, or for amateurs like me who simply love to study the ancient texts. Robert Feather also gives full credit to John Allegro as few modern scholars do. It's disgraceful how many modern authors on Dead Sea Scroll topics never mention John Allegro or just include his name in a single footnote. As a scientist Robert Feather creates a matrix of the calendars, languages, writing systems, weights and measures, and many other attributes of the place and time. With this data properly organized he's able to correlate the exact amount of precious metal mentioned in the some of the copper scroll's inventory, with past archaeological discoveries. The framework created is elegant and harmonizes many other elements of the Holy Lands and Egypt. Bravo!

CURRENTLY RELEVANT (2012)

Although this book was first published almost 10 years ago, recent discoveries at Qumran make it even more important today for us to correctly understand that the history of ALL Western religions (Judaism, Catholicism, Protestant and Islam) began in Egypt. While substantial evidence has now been accumulated to clearly establish that the root and foundation of monotheism, and especially Judaism, come directly from the 18th Dynasty Egyptian pharaohs, culminating in Akhenaten's decree and move of the Egyptian capital to Amarna, current theologians are extremely reluctant to concede or even discuss this fact in an open forum. Shame on them all. Robert Feather is an outstanding scholar. This book is an absolute MUST-READ for anyone interested in understanding the true roots and beginning of Western monotheism. It didn't begin with Abraham and the Old Testament patriarchs as is now incorrectly declared. That is a modern myth. Don't believe me? Read the confirming evidence in this important book. Binchy, a fantastic author who didn't know how to end this book!

I really liked this book until the very end. Binchy writes clearly and simply and each of her characters is not only well defined but lovable. I lived through the time of which she writes and was empathetic of her tales of wartime chaos and deprivation. Her plot was completely believable and I was anxious to see how the story evolved -- but it didn't. At the end, I was looking forward to the time when Aisling and Elizabeth, free of matrimonial encumbrances, would finally settle down with each other in Ireland. But they walked out of the courthouse and into oblivion without a by-your-leave. Very disappointing. It spoiled the whole book. It would have taken very few paragraphs to write a satisfying epilogue. Pity.

A wonderful and evocative novel

I have long been a fan of Maeve Binchy's novels, but I must say that this one had the most pure friendship. I honestly felt as if I were observing surreptitiously somewhere. The book was so engrossing that I couldn't but it down. The years passed by with the wave of a hand but Aisling and Elizabeth's friendship stayed the foundation that let the girls know that no matter what happened, no matter how bad thing got for them, they always had each other. Even with such a strong central focus the rest of the novel shaped up well, with an excellent cast of characters rounding out the cast of characters.
The novel isn't just well cast, it is well structured and it flows well without feeling contrived at any point, which is important for a good novel. Her style make it seem as like she is simply rerecording a story that she heard from a friend which makes her so infinitely readable. I have loved so many of her books but I honestly feel like this one was truly special. It was a one sitting read for me. Enjoy!

Would have been 5 stars, but then came the ending.......

I really enjoyed reading this book but the ending was a huge disappointment. It almost feels like Maeve Binchy realized that it was getting far too long, so she had to begin wrapping it up. It started getting confusing towards the later part and then came to an abrupt end.

Excellent for use during therapy.

This is an excellent workbook for patients/clients to work on their difficulties with anxiety and fears/phobias. This book is based on the longest-standing, most research-supported techniques to treat anxiety. It teaches a person these highly effective therapeutic techniques in a step-by-step format. It is not an entertaining self-help book; it is a workbook that requires effort by the reader. It is a book that teaches a series of very effective, specific, practical skills or tools for a person to learn to control anxiety and be treated successfully for phobias. This treatment program takes lots of practice and daily work, but it has been shown in controlled scientific research to be very effective.

If possible, it is best to use this book during individual psychotherapy. An experienced clinical psychologist who uses cognitive-behavioral therapy will be able to help you use this book to get maximum benefit. This book is a combination of techniques from cognitive therapy and behavior therapy. Feel free to read about the basics of these types of research-supported treatments before purchasing this book. I would highly recommend this workbook to anyone motivated to work on their anxiety, fears/phobias. Other good titles to work on anxiety are written by Dr. David Barlow. Consider some of his other books as well.

A match made in hell reaches for a heavenly paradise....

Wow...just wow! I read Warlord, the first book in this series and was for the most part pretty impressed with this first time author's work.
Now with this follow-up I am just blown away by the sheer poetry of her writing (YES you read that correctly...poetic writing in a violent book about biker clubs at war) and found myself re-reading passages because there was so much beauty in the words of even the most disgusting, degrading and abusive scenes.
Brew was a "dead man" walking...on his own taking jobs for money to one day pay back for what he feels were his sins of not protecting his little sister from the horrific abuse she suffered at the hands of their own father. While completing a delivery, he meets Martini, a beautiful bartender...the "property" of a vicious rival club member and is ordered to take her to another club to be held as "collateral". This is the start of a road trip to hell that doesn't go as planned, and the beginning of what would be both of their downfalls and salvations. Martini desperately wants to escape the cruel man she is owned by and Brew is a hardened shell of man...having failed to protect the little girl he has taken into his heart and left behind a broken woman...and so they both feel like they have nothing to lose when everything starts to go terribly wrong.
So much happens in this book (it is literally non-stop action and one bad thing after another that makes it crazy hard to follow at times) that I won't even try to explain or even try to summarize...but just know going in that you will not be disappointed or feel like it is anything you have read before.
The relationship between Brew and Martini is fascinating...a deep, dark connection based on the twisted imperfections of two lonely, lost souls who feel they have no hope at love or even deserve to be feeling anything close to happiness. The slow build-up of trust and feeling and the sexual chemistry that both threatens to heal as it destroys them is also really wonderful and this author took her time to make it very real and believable.
A HUGE and I mean gigantic OMG and WTH moment occurs about 80% into the book and I pretty much was in shock but thought it made for a very interesting complication and took the story in a different direction but created the basis for some new feelings to be explored.
It ends with an HEA for now and the promise of more adventure to come for another brother in the next book. Be forewarned though, it contains graphic depictions of abuse against women and some pretty gruesome violence in the course of conducting club business as well.

Lana Grayson does it again. Another book with a deep, thoughtful, action packed plot, steamy romance, and heroes to die for.

In this second book, and standalone title of the Anathema series, we follow Rose's brother, Brew, in exile from his club. He finds himself in trouble with other clubs, and with one particular woman, Martini.

This is a standalone title meaning you don't have to read any of the other Anathema books to read this, but I would recommend it anyways, because they are pretty darn good.

Lana crafts a world that is realistic, gritty, and filled with all those MC elements that we hope for when we pick up this type of dark romance. But she goes deeper than that, examining her characters and bringing new depth to them. Her development plus her beautiful writing style make this a book that is worth your time. It's a deep read, full of adventure and revelation. One that kept me turning page after page, wondering what would happen next.

Grayson has a strong handle on Club politics, gang interworking, and organized crime, making this a treat to read, because each detail is thought out, face paced, and seamless. But just because it has those elements doesn't mean the romance gets lost, it actually provides the perfect showcase for a twisted, complicated, and absolutely steamy love story.

I loved the tension between Martini and Brew, each a strong character with a will and agency of their own, fitting together in a way that helps both of them heal, while providing tantalizing love scenes.

If you want it all, sex, romance, intrigue, and motorcycles, this one is for you.

Fan-freaking-tastic!!

Loved It!! Exiled is the second book in the Anathema series and I suggest that you read the first book Warlords before you start it. Exiled picks up 3 months after Warlords ends and it is Brew's story.
Brew is exiled from Anathema and is on the run making money doing transport jobs for other MC's. He is a dead man walking bidding his time until his father gets out of prison so he can avenge all the terrible things his father did to his sister.
Martini is stuck in a abusive relationship with no way out. Her biker boyfriend and his MC club hire Brew to take her to a rival MC for collaterial on a job that they are doing for them. Brew is against this but has no choice.
This book is filled with excitement,danger and some sexy scenes.
Brew is one of those characters that you fall in love, he is tough, sexy and I love that he is in his late 30's. Martini has a mouth on her and her and Brew's chemistry is off the charts.
One thing that I really love about this series is that there is something that comes out in each book that you would have never guessed. I highly recommend this book, you will not be disappointed.

Incredible tour de force

This is one of the most important books in the English language. It is imperative that it remains in print.

Wierzbicka gives a detailed semantic breakdown of all the English speech act verbs she can find, more than a hundred. Each is discussed in depth, contrasted against others, then broken out into her English pseudo-code language.

A critical reference.

Will only be useful for advanced researchers in pragmatics, linguistics, and higher-level computational linguistics. As speech acts sit on top of semantics / syntax / grammar / lexical items, the book mentions but is above these layers. Speech acts are also similar to illocutionary force. If you do not already know what pragmatics and illocutionary force are, there is no reason for you to open this book. Otherwise, it is an extremely chewy reference, with tough, valuable meat on every page. Invaluable for the right person.

This is a book about the things people say about images. It is not primarily concerned with specific pictures and the things people say about them, but rather with the way we talk about the idea of imagery, and all its related notions of picturing, imagining, perceiving, likening, and imitating. It is a book about images, therefore, that has no illustrations except for a few schematic diagrams, a book about vision written as if by a blind author for a blind reader. If it contains any insight into real, material pictures, it is the sort that might come to a blind listener, overhearing the conversation the sighted speakers talking about images. My hypothesis is that such a listener might see patterns in these conversations that would be invisible to the sighted participant.

Many words for a few ideas.

The introduction says "This is a book about the things people say about images". As a person who buys a lot of instructional books which I hope are insightful and succinct I found this overwritten. Someone liking miles of wordy literary type criticism might find it appealing.

Insightful, thoughtful, lucid. A great place to start.

Mitchell brings a kind of consensus approach within literary criticism to bear on the criticism of visual imagery; the criticism of an image as if it were a text. A lot of this has been done, without any discipline or care for consistency or clarity, by an army of post-structuralist French critics, with uneven results. Not that Agamben, Derrida and so on aren't quite worth reading, but I'd guess that reading them would be a lot more rewarding for someone who had read this little book first.
