A contemporary of Donald Judd, Posenenske is most known for her body of spare, repetitive forms made from industrial materials, corrugated cardboard, pressboard and sheet metal, which she manipulated and bent for public spaces and performative appearances. In the mid-1960s, after producing several series of Abstract Expressionist and Constructivist paintings, Posenenske began the body of work she is most associated with today: the infinitely positionable and site-specific ventilation shaft-like series Square Tubes (1967). She was featured in Documenta 12 in 2007 and her pieces are part of numerous collections, but her work receded from the foreground when she abandoned sculpture in 1968, feeling that art did not have sufficient political impact. Posenenske died in 1985; this monograph secures her legacy.

Excellent next step after introductory linear algebra

I've worked my way through the first six chapters of this book now, which have covered all of the most fundamental elements in linear algebra--fields, vector spaces, linear transformations, and so on--and it has been phenomenal. I'm probably exactly the intended audience for this book; I have a minor in Mathematics, a background in introductory linear algebra, and I'm studying higher level math independently to prepare for graduate school. This book does a phenomenal job balancing formal proofs with exposition and examples. I've never found the exposition tedious, but rather it's just enough to motivate the proofs as they arise. And each new proof will usually be illustrated by a handful of examples. The examples are great because they get well off the beaten path of finite dimensional vector spaces over the reals. One of the primary things I was looking for in a linear algebra book was one that showed linear algebra in applications outside of finite dimensions over the reals, and so I've really enjoyed the examples. In short, if you're looking for a comprehensive, challenging, and rewarding "next step" after introductory linear algebra, this is a great book!

Freud before Fame

Amazing book. Caveat, though: These letters are not the "complete" Freud correspondence to Fliess. One simply does not know which letters are "missing"--that is, other than ALL the letters written by Fliess. However, there are sometimes references to other correspondence written to Fliess by Freud that give assurance that this is not a "complete" set of letters. The translator in this case was not logical in assuming he had finally assembled ALL the Freud letters to Fliess. The translation is excellent; the opinions expressed from time to time in the notes need to be taken with a grain of salt sometimes. In addition, one has to think of precisely what words mean in the context of the times. Words such as "abuse" in this context tends always to mean "masturbation" or "coitus interruptus" or the use of a condom during coitus. Onanism was thought to be very dangerous and also to "abuse" the "natural" tendencies of procreative sexuality, which is deemed healthy. It is indeed a pleasure to read--and study--this original source material. One truly gets a sense of the times in which Freud existed then and of what he was like before he was a "great" man. The presence of a growing family looms large though little is written of it; and the connection between how Freud lived his life and how he at the same time developed his initial theories becomes clearer.

This book is a formidable primary source reviewing the development of Freud's understanding of how people think and act the way they do, an exposition of the patterns so readily observed and hypothetical systems for explaining everyday function as well as diagnosis and treatment. While other books, do a better job of laying out the foundations of psychoanalytic thinking, this one gives real insight into the humanity of Freud, including his love for his children, his longing for friendship, and the heartbreak of trying to transparently and courageously explicate our inner world amid tremendous professional resistance. I felt as if I got to know Freud better and to see how over the course of many years the ideas he worked with were reworked and evolved in the context of his family, his cultural and historical epoch, and through his efforts at self-examination. It is an excellent book and recommended, if not essential, reading.

Freud's self-analysis and beyond

The Freud-Fliess letters are the very foundations of psychoanalysis as most authors agree that it is possible to recognize what Freud developed later. Basically, through those letters Freud analysed himself and the reader can appreciate the very beginning of the great discoveries that Freud did after that period. In particular, Fliess who was Freud's best friend, shared the same scientific enthusiasm of Freud, but the pair ended up building a very odd relationship, namely Freud unconsciously considered Fliess his analyst (even if they were only corresponding) and most authors agree that Freud developed a negative transference that led to the end of the friendship. Anyone interested in the history of psychoanalysis should read this book and explore Freud's passions.

global hip-hop (one of America's most pernicious exports to the world) represents resistance to the evil
hegemony of Western discourse. That most of the purveyors of this often subliterate pseudo-scholarship
have academic affiliations is a sad commentary on the intellectual degeneracy of the American university,
which is increasingly a factory for the production of ideology and social engineering.

Good Overview

Yann Le Bohec's book is an excellent synthesis of many specialized studies of the Roman army in the period from the time of Augustus to the end of the third century. This text is actually a paperback reissue of the English translation of the 1989 French orginal. Nonetheless, Le Bohec's text updates and surpasses earlier treatments and is the most reliable overview of the subject at the present time. I found the chapter on the practical and symbolic value of "training" fascinating, and the chapter on the strategic deployment of the legions is valuable for an understanding of the attempts Rome made to deal with external threats. Less successful is the book's brief "history" of the army--essentially a chronological look at the emperors and how they rated as generals. The treatment is far too compressed. However, Le Bohec's final chapters on the socio-economic impact of the Roman army on Europe are first-rate. A fine treatment and one of interest to anyone who studies Roman history.

A Good Companion Book

If you like Adrian Goldsworthy you'll probably like this book as well, it has a similar focus on the small details instead of simply presenting biographies of the commanders. Readers not ready to dive into detailed technical assessments of the Roman military will appreciate the excellent visual presentation of the book and concise writing that will not have you hunting for a Latin dictionary. It covers a bit of everything: soldier names, location of Legion camps, economic life, diet, religion, training, etc.
If the book has a fault it's that it only provides the barest of details on many of these aspects (notably soldiers and Roman law), probably expecting the reader to refer to other sources if they want more information. Yet the bibliography is not very useful to the English reader as they are almost all French or German sources! Not unexpected as this is a translation, but still annoying.

Scholarly and Informative

Heavy plodding in some areas and not for light reading. A reference book that didn't answer some of my questions. Bohec mentions the presence of numerous "barbarians" in the Roman Army but, other than for a security squad protecting Emperors Augustus through Nero, he mentions Germanic legionnaires very little. He mentions Syrians, Pannonians, Arabs, Celts and others but Germans are conspicuous by their absence. He mentions the Gods--some of them barbarian Gods--worshipped by the legionnaires, none of which are Germanic. He mentions a listing of 5700 names, some of which are "barbarian", but mentions no barbarian German names. On the other hand, the Romans did occupy southern Germany and it would seem logical that they would have accepted German recruits or even conscripted them.

Why is this important? It's because Rome and the Western Empire was eventually defeated by the Germans. I've alway assumed that this ultimate defeat was because Germans had learned Roman strategies, tactics and equipment while serving in the Roman Army, but perhaps I am wrong. Perhaps Rome was so outraged by Arminius treachery in the Teuteborg Forest that they, for the most part, didn't trust German recruits and excluded them from the army. This doesn't seem too likely to me but what may be more possible is that the Romans did, indeed, accept them into the army…but…forced them into Romanized names and forced them to worship only Roman gods. Therefore Roman soldiers, who happened to be Germans, are lost to history.

Excellent Resource!!

As a long time ESL teacher, I was so happy to find this teacher's manual and the accompanying grammar books. Because my students are almost 100% native Spanish speakers with a wide range of education backgrounds, I have especially appreciated that the grammar books come written in Spanish also. This has allowed my students to develop a more solid grammar base in their native language which is then more easily transferred to English. The activities in this teacher manual are a great compliment to the lessons highlighted in the grammar books and are easily differentiated for multiple levels. They really engage the students and allow for more active lessons to break up the two hour class period. I highly recommend this teacher manual and the accompanying grammar books to any ESL teacher!

I have been using Elizabeth Weal's two grammar books, Gram�tica del ingl�s, Books 1 and 2 for the past two years. With this new book aimed at teachers and tutors, I have found many useful activities to make the grammar lessons come alive. I like the activities that Elizabeth has suggested very much and I like the fact that they repeat so the students will be familiar with the routines. In addition to the great teaching ideas, Elizabeth's heartfelt introduction to the book is inspirational. It is titled "One ESL teacher's perspective." I recommend all of Elizabeth's grammar books to anyone who teaches a beginning or multi-level ESL class to Spanish-speaking learners.

Our literacy council utilizes volunteer tutors to assist adult learners, and Elizabeth Weal's grammar books are big favorites with our tutors. Since our volunteers typically do not come to us with a background in teaching English grammar, they often struggle with getting concepts across successfully to the students. Elizabeth's format - wherein she contrasts Spanish language constructs with the English language counterparts - is really helpful to both the students and the tutors. They fill a niche very nicely in our instructional materials library.

Some good ideas, but sloppy writing and zero editing

The book provides a discussion of various things to consider when starting a hedge fund. While the advice is generally sound, much of it is facile in nature.

Also, and this is the most annoying part of this book, Wilson has simply printed transcripts of interviews he conducted with numerous industry participants. If Wilson truly is an expert, he should take the time to distil the key points from these interviews and then couple them with his own views and write clear compelling chapters. Instead, he devotes pages and pages to interviewee bios, greetings ("Thanks for meeting with me"), and self-congratulatory comments ("That's a great point, Bill! I couldn't agree more").

In a further effort to increase the page count, he also pads it out with useless end of chapter summary questions and a long FAQ section. If those FAQ's are worthy of inclusion in the book, surely it would be useful to weave their content into the relevant chapters rather than simply bolting them on as the final chapter.

In the book, Wilson advises budding hedge fund managers to make sure they've got a killer Powerpoint pitch that is concise. Frankly, he should have taken his own advice and shortened this book to about a 20 page brochure or Powerpoint. But then it would be tough to command 'hardcover' book prices.

Solid if basic information

I'm looking at this book as someone outside of finance looking to get in.

Pros:
Emphasizes creation of marketing materials. Talks about topics to mention specifically in marketing--very helpful.
New insight: Focus on selling process, trust, risk management (especially) and infrastructure rather than returns
Author has extra videos online that extend book topics, free discounts on related services. Author is well intentioned.
Really liked that he included a standard due diligence questionnaire

Cons:
Points made are often basic (emphasize unique selling proposition, positive thinking), rather than specific - Leaves out prime brokers & cap intro, soft dollars, legal & compliance issues (3c1vs 3c7, accredited vs qualified, etc.), historic context (Dodd-Frank legislation impact, rise of high frequency) & industry landscape (funds vs fund of funds, institutions vs family offices etc).

Author comes off as obsequious in the interviews when he always agrees with subjects. Too many interviews with service providers, not enough with name brand hedge fund managers. Study questions seem silly for a non-academic book.

Great book from a guy has worked his way up through this industry. I am immersed in my CAIA/CFA studies and recently became cognizant of the CHP -Certified Hedge Fund Prof. dez. This book was a great qualitative refresh from the analytics of my other two designation pursuits. I highly recommend the book and the visual guide to hedge funds by Richard, as well as pursuit of the CHP is you aspire to dominate and be an authority in the alternative/hedge arena.
