It is the best book out there in 2012

When this book came out Aug 2010, I would have given it 4 stars as it was a great way to learn the new methodology, with many helpful examples and detailed explanations. UVM EA was fairly close to OVM, but the authors did a good job of showing the latest and greatest. I sent them many suggestions, hoping to see a revised version for UVM 1.0, or even 1.1. New features have been added to the methodology, but we are stuck with this two year old book, so I dropped my rating to 3 stars. If you are a verification novice, or have only used non-OVM methodologies, this is still the best cheap way to learn UVM.

Come on Sharon and Kathleen - give us the latest and greatest! When I teach UVM classes, I would love to recommend your book again.

Helpful Code Examples

Lots of great examples, I learned more about UVM from this book than any UVM documentation I found online. They provide in-depth examples of many intermediate to advanced UVM topics. I normally don't buy instructional books but the lack of quality online content makes this book a must-read. For someone like myself without who hadn't used UVM or OVM, this was a very good place to start.

The book is out dated. UVM 1.1a (maybe UVM 1.1b) is the latest incantation of this class library. Expertise about it thought is locked away in experts' heads and you have to pay them $2000 to get them to tell you. I'd wait until this book is updated before spending the $45 on it.

Forward's first novel gives the concept of the balance between good and evil a most ingenious twist: What if good were so totally triumphant that it became a worse danger than evil, and a band of unemployed evil characters had to go on a desperate quest to find the means of putting the saving bit of evil back into the world? The result of this twist is an almost straightforward quest tale, with numerous well-drawn characters (including a centaur who starts off as a secret agent for good and eventually joins the side of evil), great ingenuity about magic, very creditable world-building, and considerable wit. Although bearing its share of first-novel flaws, it has many more virtues, which include an underlying, serious examination of the good-evil dichotomy that is the basis of so many role-playing games. A Terrific Nonstandard Fantasy

In a twist on the usual fantasy story, Forward's heroes are not classically good-hearted heroes, but instead villians. Including an assassin, an evil sorceress, a greedy thief, and a black knight, the main characters are likable and intriguing. They band together to save the world from destruction by the powers of good.
In the beginning, I found the characters one-dimensional. However, as the story quickly unfolded, I was fascinated to see that both character introspection and interaction developed their personalities to an amazing degree. After that, even minor, short-lived characters managed to grab my attention fully.
There are a number of sly digs at other fantasy works, which make Villians By Necessity an even funnier book if you're well-read in fantasy novels.

Root for the bad guys!

After an all-out war, Good has at last triumphed over Evil. Peace, milk and cookies now reign over all the kingdoms. But something is wrong. The total victory of the forces of Good has created an internal imbalance in the universe and now, unless Evil is raised up to a measure of its former glory, the world will end. It falls upon an assorted group of leftover minor villains and misfits to save the day. Included in this contentious band are: Sam, a bored assassin always clothed in black; Arcie, his vertically-challenged sneakthief sidekick; Valeriana, an embittered sorceress; Kaylana, a Druid priestess; Blackmail, a mute black knight; and Robin, a naive minstrel-centaur who chronicles the villains' deeds. Pursued and harried at every turn by the minions of Good, with a spy lurking in their midst, this bunch of lowlifes must learn to co-exist and then somehow reopen the magically sealed Darkgate and release darkness back into the world. Only the Good die young? Not in this book.

Eve Forward may be the daughter of sci-fi writer Robert L. Forward but this debut novel is more reminiscent of Roger Zelazny's work, in its wit, tone and predisposition to upending themes. She writes with zest and imparts a sense of satiric fun to the epic proceedings. Her oily-haired assassin Sam is an endearing character, never mind that he's technically a bad guy. I fervently hope she puts out more books in the future. I wouldn't mind a bit if she revisits this fantasy universe.

Lastly, this book needs to be re-released and soon. I've looked everywhere for a copy and the lowest price I've found is $38.25 for a paperback from the original printing.

Does a good job with an impossible task

Most of this book is a practical review of a lot of conditions that those of us who went to medical school years ago had to learn, but mainly forgot if we were practicing exclusively in the first world. Things like schistosomiasis and neurocysticercosis. But, thanks to migrations of people and other circumstances, it may turn out that we have to relearn them. There are also good chapters on more common diseases, like tuberculosis and hepatitis B. There are chapters dealing with the distribution of various diseases, which can help you sort out what to look for in a particular patient, and chapters on special classes of immigrant patients, such as survivors of torture and interpersonal violence. The book takes an explicit moral stance: that many immigrants have gone through great hardship before reaching countries of refuge, and that they deserve compassionate treatment. For a textbook, it's decently written and edited, and presented in a nice format. Of course, to describe all the medical problems that could be encountered in, basically, the entire world except for the most developed nations, is impossible, but this book does a good job of reducing the task to something that's useable. Decent survey

Content: It's difficult to cover such a broad area with anything approaching uniform depth. This book does a fairly decent job. The book is by a single author (rather than collected by an editor) and this shows in a pleasantly uniform approach to the material. It's well suited for use in a graduate course in materials chemistry, although it probably would not be the only text used. The introductory section on analytical techniques was helpful, particularly since it's entirely geared at applying the techniques to nanomaterials (as one would expect). The literature references are perhaps missing a little of the most recent (up to publication year 2009) work, but offer better coverage of the older references -- which are frequently more difficult to identify by searching databases. As such, the book offers excellent examples of how spectroscopic techniques can be used to study the optical and electronic properties of new nanomaterials.

Technical: The text could have used better proofreading. My copy is the hardcover, and the pages are starting to feel a little poorly bound. This is my only reason for 4 stars rather than 5.

Excellent, but not complete

The 36 pages of the free Kindle edition contain Dickens' riveting account of the wreck and aftermath. However, not included here are the collaborative bits (stories related by the castaways to ease their ordeal.) These were part of the original book, and were contributed by Wilkie Collins and other contemporaries of Charles Dickens. I was disappointed that these "stories within the story" were omitted.

About the End of the Story....

SPOILER ALERT - The online version of this otherwise very good story that I and seemingly others have read ends with the lifeboats still lost at sea. There is a version of the story in Dickens' published "Christmas Stories" book that I am getting from the library to compare, but in doing some searching, it appears that there is nothing further about the end of the story available.

However, at the outset of the story, the narrator says that he is writing in 1856, and later says the voyage took place in 1851. From that, one would conclude that at least both the Captain and the First Mate, who finishes the story, survived in some fashion. But it does seem odd that there is no further explanation of what happened in the end - Dickens generally gave very detailed endings to most of his stories. I wondered if one of the other authors who apparently worked on the story supplied the ending (several of the stories that Dickens wrote with others have been published later omitting the portions not written by him, which can be frustrating), but I have so far not been able to find anything further. It appears what the other authors may have written instead are the stories the passengers told each other after the shipwreck, which are omitted in the online version that I read. In any event, as mentioned above, from the cited dates in the story, it appears that at least some survived the ordeal.

A lucid treatment of anisotropic elastic theory, especially the elastic interaction of a dislocation with an interface

I turned to this book for information on a very specific problem among the many facets of anisotropic elasticity theory addressed by the author: the interaction of a dislocation with a free surface, or with a planar boundary for a layer of different mechanical stiffness. I had read about the treatment of this problem using Stroh's 2-dimensional dislocation model and analytical continuation in the complex plane in numerous journal articles. Prior to reading Hwu's rigorous treatment of this problem, however, I did not understand how the authors of these articles used analytic continuation to extract the boundary conditions from the continuity of displacement and stress at the interface.

Instead of presenting the boundary conditions as "obvious" or as the result of "standard analytic continuation arguments" (as indifferently observed by the authors of various journal articles), Hwu clearly explains how Liouville's Theorem (a concept found in all complex analysis books) is used to arrive at the result. Liouville's Theorem states that a function which is analytic in a given region of the complex plane must also be constant in that region. Therefore, if a function in a given region is analytic, that region would necessarily be free of singularities/dislocations. By invoking Liouville's Theorem (p.102, Ch.4), Hwu makes it clear that each side of the interface (i.e. each half-space) may only be represented by a sum of functions that are devoid of singularities. Thus, if the dislocation is contained in the lower half-space (i.e. half space#1, which is situated below the interface), half-space#1 cannot include the Green's function G(z) corresponding to the dislocation/singularity. The sum of functions representing the upper half-space (i.e. half-space#2, the which is above the interface), however, may include the Green's function for the dislocation/singularity because the Green's function is finite within half-space#2. Similarly, the sum of functions representing half-space#2 may not include the Green's function corresponding to the reflection of the singularity/dislocation (i.e (G(z*))*, according the Schwarz reflection principle for harmonic functions). On the other hand, the sum of functions representing half-space#1 may include (G(z*))*, because (G(z*))* is finite within half-space#2. For a good treatment of the Schwarz reflection principle see Dennery (pp.80-82) Mathematics for Physicists (Dover Books on Physics).

Almost everything you need to know about calculating the strain field or Peach-Koehler force on a dislocation near an interface or surface is contained in Chapter 4 "Infinite Space, Half-Space, and Bimaterials" on pp.87-114. What I have learned from reading this chapter in Hwu's book is vitally important in my research work. Only the level of understanding achieved by reading a book of this caliber is sufficient for the dedicated research scientist or engineer to have confidence in his calculations.

The brilliant treatment that I have described above, however, only takes the reader up to the first four chapters (pp.1-113) of this outstanding book! In addition to the laying the groundwork for the treatment of half-spaces, the author addresses wedges and interface corners (Ch.5: pp.115-158); elliptical and polygonal holes/voids (Ch.6: pp.159-186); interfacial cracks and delimitation (Ch.6: pp.187-23; inclusions and their interactions with dislocations (Ch.8: pp.239-275); surface indentation and the elastic theory of contact between two adjacent bodies (Ch.9: pp.277-332); thermoelastic effects on voids, cracks, and wedges (Ch.10, pp.333-367); piezoelectric materials (pp.369-410); and plate bending (Ch.12: 411-434). Chapters 13-14 (pp.435-543 address stretching, voids, and inclusions in laminates: Chapter 15 (pp.545-588) is devoted to boundary element analysis. The remaining pages of this book (pp.589-673) are devoted to its extensive appendices, tables, references, and indices.

Extremely well documented, great companion to Qur'an

I must say i'm truly enjoying this book. I'm reading the Qur'an for apologetic purposes, and knowing that the Qur'an's chapters (surahs) are not in historical order (just longest to shortest), and even the verses in the surahs aren't given at once and can be peace-mealed, it's great to know what verses came about for what reasons.

Each claim is well documented with the page and source from islamic texts, which as one who shies away from speculative statements without any evidence to back it up, or taking items out of context, means a lot to see this level of documentation.

If you want to get a good understanding of Muhammed this book is it. I pray some muslims read as well and take a skeptical look at their faith, and the person who had a verse from alah for any sinful whim he had.
