About the Author

Jacek F. Gieras graduated in 1971 from the Technical University of Lodz, Poland, with distinction. In 1980, he received his Ph.D degree in Electrical Engineering (Electrical Machines) in 1975, and the Dr habil. degree (corresponding to DSc), also in Electrical Engineering, from the University of Technology, Poznan, Poland. His research area is Electrical Machines, Drives, Electromagnetics, Power Systems, and Railway Engineering. In 1987 he was promoted to the rank of full professor. Since 1998 he has been affiliated with United Technologies Corporation, USA. In 2007 he also joined the University of Technology and Life Sciences in Bydgoszcz, Poland, as a full professor. An IEEE fellow, Prof. Gieras has authored and co-authored 11 books of international standing and more than 250 scientific and technical papers. In addition, he holds 30 patents.

Zbigniew (Jerry) Piech graduated in 1975 from the Technical University of Wroclaw, Poland. He received his Ph.D degree in Electrical Engineering in 1981, also from the Technical University of Wroclaw. From 1975 to 1989 he was an academic staff member of the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Technology and Life Sciences, Bydgoszcz, Poland. He joined United Technologies Corporation in 1990.

His major contributions in the area of electric machines and power systems include development of a series of modern permanent magnet brushless motors for Otis Elevator Company. During the past 10 years he has had a leading role in establishing permanent magnet motor technology for the company. Dr Piech authored and coauthored 20 publications and holds 14 patents in the area of electric machine design and controls.

Bronislaw Z. Tomczuk graduated in 1977 from the Opole University of Technology, Poland, with honors. He received his PhD and Dr habil. (corresponding to DSc) degrees from the Technical University of Lodz, Poland, in 1985 and 1995, respectively. Since 1978, he has been on the academic staff of the Technical University of Opole, Poland, and he was promoted to full professor in 2007. His area of interest is 3D mathematical modeling of electromagnetic fields using numerical methods and its applications to CAD of transformers, linear motors, actuators, magnetic bearings, and other electromagnetic devices. He has authored or coauthored five books and more than 170 scientific and technical articles, and he holds 10 patents. He is also a recipient of the Gold Cross of Merit from the President of Poland.

A lot of useful information, let down by poor reproduction and editing

'Linear Synchronous Motors' is a worthwhile book on linear motors, with a strong bias toward the transportation and automation fields. There is much useful information here, the writing is reasonably clear and the explanations good.

The book is let down by the terrible quality of the reproduction and lackluster editorial checking. The reproduction resembles poor photocopying in many cases - I could have got a better result printing a PDF of it on an ordinary laser printer. This is annoying, as this book is not cheap. It also contains numerous small spelling errors; inexcusable with modern word processing; doubly so had the editorial checking been up to the mark.

I expect a book of this sort to have first class, clear printing with top-notch quality control and editing in evidence. This isn't up to that standard, which is a shame, as the content merits such care.

A good book, let down by a cheap publisher. Four stars for the technical content alone.

In this monumental book, sociologist Robert Castel reconstructs the history of what he calls "the social question," or the ways in which both labor and social welfare have been organized from the Middle Ages onward to contemporary industrial society. Throughout, the author identifies two constants bearing directly on the question of who is entitled to relief and who can be excluded: the degree of embeddedness in any given community and the ability to work. Along this dual axis the author locates virtually the entire history of social welfare in early-modern and contemporary Europe.

This work is a systematic defense of the meaningfulness of the category of "the social," written in the tradition of Foucault, Durkheim, and Marx. Castel imaginatively builds on Durkheim's insight into the essentially social basis of work and welfare. Castel populates his sociological framework with vivid characterizations of the transient lives of the "disaffiliated": those colorful itinerants whose very existence proved such a threat to the social fabric of early-modern Europe. Not surprisingly, he discovers that the cruel and punitive measures often directed against these marginal figures are deeply implicated in the techniques and institutions of power and social control.

The author also treats the flipside of the problem of social assistance: namely, matters of work and wage-labor. Castel brilliantly reveals how the seemingly objective line of demarcation between able-bodied beggars—those who are capable of work but who chose not to do so—and those who are truly disabled becomes stretched in modernity to make room for the category of the "working poor." It is the novel crisis posed by those masses of population who are unable to maintain themselves by their labor alone that most deeply challenges modern societies and forges recognizably modern policies of social assistance.

The author's gloss on the social question also offers us valuable perspectives on contemporary debates over who should receive social assistance and whether this entitlement should be linked to the obligation to work. Castel's rich insights and brilliant generalizations are invaluable for anyone concerned with what he describes as the "new social question" of work and social welfare in contemporary society.

About the Author

Robert Castel is director of studies at the �cole des Hautes �tudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris. His other books include Le Psychanalysme, l'Ordre Psychiatrique, and La Gestion des Risques. The translator, Richard Boyd, is assistant professor of political science at the University of Pennsylvania, and a noted scholar of French social theory in his own right.

Disappointing story, but shows promise to come.

"Fury of Rachel Monette" is a thriller where a young Jewish woman searches for her abducted son, but soon finds herself at the center of an international conspiracy to destroy Israel. She crosses paths with another Jewish man with a dark past, and who is the key to the whole conspiracy. The idenitity of the abductor is shocking, and you will feel gratified at the ending, but the whole thing rings hollow by the time you get there.

"When do we take off our masks, put on our hats and walk off the stage?" The victim was lured into this trap with one of the robot's enthusiasm about cooking a meal for her. He supposedly worked in the kitchen of an expensive restaurant who works with social workers to hire felons right out of prison. He's not as young as he appears and his fingers have no finger nails. She thought they were messages from God, and he was the "real man" she'd asked God to send to her.

Using toys to make up for their deficiency, nothing works right. Long and floppy, it is frustration for the girl. They needed to make terrific adjustments but did not know how. That's just the beginning of weird abnormal behavior and they know only the animal version which doesn't work. "Get on your knees" is not for an execkution but an aborigense approach. "I suppose I did...but I can't remember when I did, or how." These men are demented, but though she talked like a lady, she could fight like wildcats. One got away but how many of the homeless were lured into damnation and didn't live to talk about it. Too many people talked too much. Rachel was driven by a quiet fury and absolutely would not give up her quest until she learns the truth. This was a journey back in time which taught other bad times whe had wanted to forget. She learned how to use her own destructive power. We are only on this earth once and for too short a time to hurt the people we love. Rachel did not know the meaning of the word forgiveness but, thank goodness, Mark, knows all words and even how to spell them. He was the object of her fury. It was the devil at work to make people unhappy and run away. If you run from the one you hurt even inadvertently, you may never have another chance for someone to love you. A person with unloving parents grows up to commit the same mistakes and still has a lot to learn as we pass through our time here on earth. I like that song, "Love Will Keep Us Together."
