About the Author
Wayne L. Winston is Professor Emeritus of Decision Sciences at the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University and is now a Professor of Decision and Information Sciences at the Bauer College at the University of Houston. He has won more than 45 teaching awards, including the school-wide MBA award six times. His current interest is in showing how spreadsheet models can be used to solve business problems in all disciplines, particularly in finance, sports, and marketing. In addition to publishing more than 20 articles in leading journals, Dr. Winston has written such successful textbooks as OPERATIONS RESEARCH: APPLICATIONS AND ALGORITHMS, MATHEMATICAL PROGRAMMING: APPLICATIONS AND ALGORITHMS, SIMULATION MODELING WITH @RISK, DATA ANALYSIS FOR MANAGERS, SPREADSHEET MODELING AND APPLICATIONS, MATHLETICS, DATA ANALYSIS AND BUSINESS MODELING WITH EXCEL 2013, MARKETING ANALYTICS, and FINANCIAL MODELS USING SIMULATION AND OPTIMIZATION. I have completed my Bachelor's degree in Mathematics and Statistics without a little knowledge about Optimization. Fortunately, I came across this book. This is one of the excellent industrial engineering books. From deterministic and simple linear programming to stochastic systems such as queueing models or dynamic programming, you may read and "learn" lots of things about OR. However, for stochastic cases you will need extra help for its matematics. But if you want to learn something about industrial engineering or something related with it, that is the book you must buy.

difficult subject - but a Must read

Daniel's story is one of tragedy and inspiration. The book drew me in and I could not put it down! It captured the emotions and feelings skillfully. The book brings you on a roller coaster ride of anguish to anger to frustration to hope. If you have children or love children, please read this. We all need to be aware of the insidious nature of bullying and realize WE need to take a stand to keep the momentum rolling that the Mendez family and Cool to be Kind (C2BK) clubs have started.

This is a heart wrenching, and heart warming, journey through a family's ordeal. For anyone who is a parent, or knows a parent, this book will open your eyes to the unfortunate reality that our children face every day. It is a story of tragedy, reality and ultimately hope for the future of our kids. I have, and will continue to, pass this story along to as many people as I can.

Please read this amazing but sad story!!!

This was a well written book and so emotionally gripping. I read this in less than 5 days as I was completely drawn into every detail. Some of it was very hard to read as you feel the torture that Daniel experienced as well as his family after his passing. Every parent should read this to understand what our children may be up against on a daily basis. Bullying is a very real thing and as a society there must be no tolerance for this disguisting behavior. The schools need to wake up and make this a priority and protect our children at whatever cost---no exceptions, no excuses. I admire the families strength during the depositions as well as the tenacity of his friend Aiden. Please read this book and pass it on to your friends and family. Spread the word, be an advocate for our kids!! That is what Daniel and his family are asking.

Don't waste your valuable time

Talk about stating the obvious. I do not think there is a new or innovative thought in this whole book. If you've been in sales, marketing, or any business function for that matter, you should already know everything in this book. Now, I know that there are very few new ideas in this world. I like to read business books and usually learn something I didn't know. When I don't learn something I didn't know, I usually still enjoy the reminders, as we all lose focus from time to time. However, this book was so dull and the content so obvious that it didn't educate me OR invigorate me. It completely fell flat.

Grade one Phonics Early Learning Skills is a book published by Speedy Publishing and sold through Baby Professor on Amazon. This book is essentially an alphabet book. Each page has a letter and along with the letter it shows an animal that begins with that letter sound. I thought that the pictures were super fun and whimsical, some of the animals, especially the hippopotamus, had me cracking up with their human like expressions and poses.

I did have some issues with the animals that they chose. For instance they used giraffe for g. My preference would have been for the author to use a word that had the /g/ sound at the beginning that is used most frequently instead of the soft /g/ in giraffe. A goat may have been a better choice for a book focusing on phonics for young children. N is for neandrathal is just, well, that is just something else isn't it? I was actually confused why the book had 2 monkeys in a row, but then I looked more carefully and found that gem.

At the end there is a list of words for children to practice reading on their own.

All in all I thought this was a cute and quirky book.

First of all, you can click on "Look Inside" on the main product page of Amazon and see the first few pages of this book. That should help you decide if this book is for you. What you see is what you get pretty much. If you can snag this book for free I think it's a good deal if you are in the market for this kind of book but honestly I wouldn't pay for it.

I believe this Baby Professor book could easily be for younger kids. I could see 3 year olds liking this book and even 2 year olds.

That being said, this ebook is very basic and nothing earth shattering. I would've been very disappointed if I had paid even just .99� for this ebook. I will leave this book on my iPad for a friends daughter that I sometimes watch at sibling sporting events. I thing she will enjoy this book as a 3 year old.

Here is my review for other Baby Professor ebooks in case you are in the market for non-phonic books. There are about 200 books in this ebook series that are offered in the kindle store for either free or for .99�. There is a variety of subjects covered (like travel, transportation, animals, etc.) and most of the books follow about the same format. They usually have a picture on one page and a short paragraph with facts about the subject, then on the next page is usually just a picture. The pictures are usually quite vivid impressive but the information is normally lacking. You can take a peek inside the books by clicking "Look Inside" and this is pretty much what you get in each book.

Overall, I do like theses books for their wonderful pictures. It would be nice if the books went into more detail but they are very basic books that I hope will get my kids interested in finding more about each subject. I think there is only 2 books that I didn't keep on my iPad, the 2nd grade phonics book and the creepy stories book. All the ebooks were offered for free to everyone at various times.

I plan on keeping most of these books on my iPad for down time for my kids when they get bored waiting different places like the doctors office or practice for a sibling. I sometimes watch a friends 3 year old daughter and she likes to look through the pictures on my phone. I plan on showing her these books to keep her entertained. I think she will love them.

Kid liked it, I could take it or leave it.

I made this purchase with the intention of my son enjoying it, and he did. When I asked him his opinion, he said "I liked it" so I gave it 4 stars. When I opened it, I noticed the colors seem somewhat muted, they could have been bolder and brighter, especially for attempting to entice a wiggly little boy to sit and read it. It is your normal A is for, B is for, but with a twist. The animals are not what you would expect, and I am having mixed feelings about that part. I think it is good because it is something different, and because my son is so used to these books, he was just reciting from memory the animals instead of reading the pages, so it forced him to pay more attention to the words and not just the animals on the pages. The thing I didn't like about it, is that some of the animals he has never heard of, and cannot pronounce and that frustrated him quite a bit. For example, X is for xenops (it shows a bird), I myself would have to google that one. At the end of the book it has a rundown of just the word and the animal or thing, and not the whole alphabet. A lot of the words are words my son already knows, so it was sort of a confidence booster at the end, which will make him want to try again,and I liked that. All in all, I would give it 3 stars, but rated it 4 because my son likes it, and it was for him. It is currently free and I was provided it to me for free so I could review it, so I am happy enough with it. I would not buy it on paperback or spend more than a buck or two on it for my Kindle though. It was an automatic download so I got to sit down right away and read it with my son. It being on an electronic device (my phone) makes it convenient to read with him anywhere, and I like that. I attempted to take a screen shot since the photos in the book aren't as bright as the cover, but I cannot get it to work on my phone.

Novel by Georges Bernanos, published in French as Journal d'un cure de campagne in 1936. The narrative mainly takes the form of a journal kept by a young parish priest during the last year of his troubled life. He records his spiritual struggle over what he perceives as the ineffectuality of his efforts to improve the lives of his impoverished and misguided parishioners. Physically, he battles a stomach ailment that local gossip attributes to drunkenness. His role in the conversion of a wealthy countess, who suddenly dies, aggravates his moral ambivalence and draws reproof from his superiors, as well as from the woman's family. His stomach condition worsens, and he seeks medical attention too late. a masterpiece

This novel is a masterpiece. It's beauty, truth and goodness steal upon you slowly as you realize through the understated prose, some of which is lapidary in wisdom, that describes the most monotonous, routine kind of life and parish ministry of a young Priest in France who is filled with a dolorous self doubt, incomprehension, boredom and sense of futility that verges on despair, targeted by village gossip and afflicted by an undiagnosed cancer, that grace is working, on him and through him. As a work of art, it is nearly perfectly constructed, possessing a radiant, formal beauty. The form is certainly matched to content. reading the book itself is inevitably to be enveloped by the bleakness and to identify with the Priest: it is an astringent, depressing experience relieved only with the gradual realization that something astonishing is happening. As a document humain it is unsurpassed in its sensitive and redemptive portrayal of the emptiness and ennui of so much of modern life through which and on which the action of grace continues to work. I highly recommend this book but I recommend too that the reader be patient and dutiful as is the Priest and in this way, as does the Priest -- who is never named and is, thus, in this way, Everyman and woman -- offer one's self,with humility, to something greater.

The "coming of age" story of a Catholic Priest.

The "coming of age" story is a definitive genre. Usually, it is the story that we are handed in high school and which somehow we identify with because the main character is going through the same issues and has the same concerns we had at the time, albeit perhaps in a more romantic, more elevated way. I'm thinking here of works like James Joyce's "The Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" and Ernest Hemingway's "Farewell to Arms" and J.D. Salinger's "Catcher in the Rye."

Unfortunately, if you miss those books as a young person, you may not be able to recapture the magic of those books. I've read a few of these books as a mature adult and I found the characters mostly insufferable. Listening to them express disappointment in the world and how it does not measure up to their expectations.

This books is almost the opposite of those books, and, strangely, it is one that I can relate to more - now, perhaps, than I could have at a younger age. In that I am perhaps like the writer of the preface, whose reading of it caused him to leave the seminary.

The story is about a young, unnamed priest who takes over an isolated, inbred, suspicious, bored and mostly unchristian. The priest is from the lowest order of peasants and had an impoverished childhood, but somehow he has learned an incredible humility and patience. His parishioners are suspicious of him and play pranks on him and take advantage of him when they can. His upbringing without money or business knowledge leaves him vulnerable to his parishioners. He also suffers stomach pain, which prevents him from eating, leaving him emaciated and weak. But the priest's innocence and humility have an effect on his parishioners, which he seems to be unaware.

The age of the priest is never specified - I get the sense of him being in his late 20s, based on one passage. If you've lived through that age and been given charge of some special responsibility to others, then you know that the sense of responsibility is intense, with its constant questioning of what is the right thing to do and the knowledge of your lack of experience and wisdom. I found that part of the character to be quite an accurate representation of the process of growing into a mature adulthood.

The story is formed in the manner of a diary, and like a diary it is episodic. The diarist does not tell everything he knows. Sometimes we watch exchanges that are perplexing in their development. The discussion with Mlle. Chantal, for example, seems to beg the question of how the priest knew about the letter that she was carrying. Likewise, the death of Dr. Delbende starts out as a hunting accident, but gradually is identified as a suicide with foreshadowing of issues for the priest. But, again, this is supposed to be a diary, and we don't write everything down in our diaries. The reader should just let the book flow and follow along.

For me, the story started out slow, but toward the middle, particularly the meeting with Madame Contess, it picked up steam. By the end, particularly when the priest is diagnosed and has his conversation with the woman his former seminary friend is living with, it becomes powerful, particularly with the closing lines that "Does it matter? Grace is everywhere...."

There is a story here, and character development, but there are also long orations by particular characters which express what must have been Bernanos views on religion, culture and the state. These are worth reading and contemplating, such as the offhand comment by a friendly French soldier that the "The last real soldier died on May 30, 1431, and you killed her, you people." (p. 245.) I particularly liked this:

"It greatly comforts me also, to think that nobody has been guilty of real harshness towards me - not to say the great word: injustice. I certainly respect those victims of iniquity who are able to find in that knowledge some basis of strength and hope. Somehow I should always hate to think myself - though unwittingly - the cause or merely the pretext of another's sin.

Even from the Cross, when Our Lord in His agony found the perfection of His saintly Humanity - even then He did not own Himself a victim of injustice: They know not what they do. Words that have meaning for the youngest child, words some would like to call childish, but the spirits of evil must have been muttering them ever since without understanding, and with ever-growing terror. Instead of the thunderbolts they awaited it as though a Hand of innocence closed over the chasm of their dwelling." (p. 292.)

Clearly this is an introspective book about religion and spiritual matters. If the reader is looking for something with more action, then they should pass this by, but if they want an interesting examination of the journey of a soul, this is a book worth reading.

The Title Is Accurate

The long and detailed forward for this book claims this is an actual diary of an actual priest in a small church in a small village in France. That is believable. Translated from the French with abbreviations of titles and names as you would probably do yourself for long names you write often. Like other reviewers, I found it somewhat difficult to read and spent most of the book thinking I would put it back on the shelf pretty soon but did not. The reality of a real person writing for himself in real time makes it difficult in spots but the reality of it clarifies eventually. I did not like it much until the end but I am glad I read it, a unique reading experience, for me at least.

Sarah Bower is a literature development officer for Creative Arts East. She teaches creative writing at the University of East Anglia. Fascinating and frustrating!!

The writing is excellent, the period detail colorful and shows great attention to detail. The Borgias come across as an enigmatic and fascinating family. The major flaw is the heroine. Her attachment to Cesare Borgia is sad, and in the end just makes her rather silly. She's a beauty in a privileged position, yet more or less ruins her own life due to one rather unsatisfying encounter with this man, and no matter how shabbily he treats her, she continues to be his pawn. This may be realistic, but I kept wishing that Esther/Violante would find a way to "get over it." The complexity and cruelty of most of the characters probably catches the themes of this time, but somehow most of them become almost impossible to care about. Definitely worth a read for those who want their history without cheerful romance!

Expertly Woven Tale Of Intrigue, Duty And Love In All Its Guises

"All my life I had been obedient to the men who exercised authority over me. Staying behind in Toledo at my father's insistence, until it was too late to travel safely and I was forced to witness my mother's lonely, unnecessary death on the beach at Nettuno. Renouncing my own faith and family in favour of these Borgias with their dangerous charm, their plausible lies and their inhumane religion. Even taking my vicious nickname because it was bestowed on me by a man. My name. My real name."

Her real name is Esther Sarfati and she emerges as our competent and enigmatic narrator. She has the unique ability to be an active part of the drama and intrigue surrounding the heyday of the Borgias but to be obscure and unimportant enough in the analogues of history to also be our proverbial "fly on the wall". The story is bookended with an older, wiser Esther recounting her story of the years leading up to and encompassing her role as a lady-in-waiting to Lucrezia Borgia: 1492-1507. It is within this small grouping of years that Esther lived boldly and lost everything and everyone she ever loved.

In 1492 Esther and her mother are left behind in Toledo, Spain by her father and brothers while they travel to Rome, Italy to find their fortune and security working to assist an up and coming Cardinal Rodrigo Borgia to buy his way into the Vatican and in hopes of escaping the Jewish persecution building in Spain under King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. Esther is a fair haired young Jewess and her father claims she and her mother can pass as Christians until he can send for them safely. When he doesn't do so and tensions get beyond control, Esther and her mother travel in the mass exodus of Jews from Spain in hopes of finding their men in Rome. After a journey wrought with illness Esther's mother dies on a beach in Italy and our distraught heroine experiences deep loss for the first time in her young life. She finds her father in Rome, quite wealthy by Jewish standards of the time and hardly affected by the news of his wife's death. His Cardinal Borgia is now Pope Alexander VI and her father has risen as a prominent banker for the Vatican. She continues in relative comfort - if not happiness and love - in her father's home until he tells her she will be joining the household of one of the Pope's illegitimate children, Lucrezia Borgia, who will be marrying for the third time at twenty-one. She is informed she must also convert to Christianity and have nothing more to do with her family or her previous life. He convinces Esther her mother would want her to do this to secure her future and ensure a prosperous marriage, but like so many other explanations given in this novel, this barely scratches the surface of the reasons.

In Lucrezia's household she is meant to change everything about herself. She must attend to all the pomp and glitter of the Catholic ceremonies and of the court, she must serve her illustrious mistress according to her every whim and, more importantly than anything else, she must bend and restructure everything she has learned to be moral and just until the Esther she was no longer exists. She is even made to change her name according to the wishes of the Borgias, first to Donata by Lucrezia and then to Violante by Lucrezia's cruel yet charming brother, Cesare. Violante (as she is called through the majority of the book) easily succumbs to the somehow pious yet vulgar ways of the court and soon becomes so enamored by Cesare that, regardless of the way he treats her, gives into his advances and ends up pregnant with his child. Since he is always on the move to build and expand his lands and his political influences, he hardly even acknowledges this child and leaves Violante not only bereft of the love she is sure he feels for her somewhere in his cold heart but with the French Pox that will fester within her for the remainder of her life.

While Cesare seems to little more than count Violante towards the top of his long line of mistresses he has strewn throughout the continent, Lucrezia begins to keep Violante close at hand and seems to befriend her and trust her with her own secrets beyond the station of a simple lady-in-waiting. Violante seems to hope that this means that Cesare, who is extremely close to his sister, has somehow expressed to Lucrezia Violante's importance and she is quite content to continue and demoralize herself and her beliefs as Lucrezia's chief keeper of secrets. This continues until we as reader believe that nothing is too low an act or a revelation to wake Violante up from her Borgia-loving stupor. When a horrid and incredibly sinful secret is revealed to Violante after Cesare's death she finally realizes that she has never been as integral a part of the Borgias as she once thought and was used as a pawn by them as everyone else without the Borgia blood inevitably is. This is the final nail that causes Violante to leave everything behind and escape this treacherous environment before it is too late.

This novel is beautifully written and so effectively exemplifies the glamour of the Borgia court that you can sympathize with Esther's complete admiration and lose of self within it. This novel is not meant to be rushed through and I am not able to even come close to describing all the people, intrigues and alliances in this review. This is my first venture into the realm of the Borgias but it will certainly not be my last. I am a huge fan of historical fiction and have read much about the corrupt Tudor court of the same time period, but the Tudors don't seem to come close to the corruptness and secret world of the Borgias. The author does a wonderful job of combining the facts we know about the Borgias with the rumor and elaboration of those known to be around the Borgias during this time but for which the history books say very little. I would highly recommend this to anyone who adores historical fiction, as long as they do not mind some steam and salaciousness within their reading. I will be waiting with baited breath for what Ms. Bower has next to offer.

I enjoyed every bit of this book. I was not familiar with this part of history and the family of the Borgias. It was fascinating to read about the lives of the powerful families of the Italian Renaissance.
This book is told from the point of view of Ester, a lady in waiting to Lucrezia Borgia. She grew up Jewish, but converts to the Catholic faith and is renamed Donata. She falls in love with Cesaer Borgia and what follows is the story of the rise and fall of the Borgia clan. But mostly it is about Ester, eventually nicknamed Violante. She tragically falls in love with Cesaer who is unable to love her in return.
I was a bit confused in the beginning of the story because of all the different names of the characters. Occasionally, some of the same characters are referred to by more than one name. So that took some getting used to.
If you enjoy historical fiction, then this would be a book to add to your to read list. It can meander a bit, but I enjoyed the writing and the plot throughout!

Very interesting read...

I've got to give Kyell credit for trying something different, and it works for the most part. Considering how I've never read an Agatha Christi novel, I personally don't know how this looks compared to other books. But as a historical mystery novel goes, especially one that has furries in it, it ain't bad; I honestly wanted to know who did the murder. The characters in here are pretty likeable, as is Ellie. She's a strong lead with a good heart, and I actually cared about her and Abby. The writing in this book is, as always, freaking good, as it matches the pacing and style of the book beautifully (I even learned a bit of British slang here). If I had any complaints, I'd be that the reveal of who did it is a bit anticlimactic. Maybe it's just me, but I was expecting a grand plot twist, especially since Kyell Gold wrote this.

But for what we got, I enjoyed it enough to probably read it again in the future. It's not as good as Kyell Gold's other works, but if you're interested in mysteries with furries in it, then this is a good book to check out! :)

Though his works I love, this was an odd shift

An odd piece for me to read from Kyell Gold. From what I've read of his statement about this book, this was a small passion piece inspired from another author. Though his works I love, this was an odd shift, as it uses jargon and a speech rhythm more found among the British, or at least more proper, even perhaps older English speakers. It was definitely a hard matter to overcome for me, but I can tell this was an attempt(A successful one, I believe) at trying another style of writing. This book most likely won't be one I will pick back up again, but I'm glad I made the attempt to read and finished it.
