Fordlandia: The Rise and Fall of Henry Ford's Forgotten Jungle City, by Greg Grandin

The stunning, never before told story of the quixotic attempt to recreate small-town America in the heart of the Amazon

In 1927, Henry Ford, the richest man in the world, bought a tract of land twice the size of Delaware in the Brazilian Amazon. His intention was to grow rubber, but the project rapidly evolved into a more ambitious bid to export America itself, along with its golf courses, ice-cream shops, bandstands, indoor plumbing, and Model Ts rolling down broad streets.

Fordlandia, as the settlement was called, quickly became the site of an epic clash. On one side was the car magnate, lean, austere, the man who reduced industrial production to its simplest motions; on the other, the Amazon, lush, extravagant, the most complex ecological system on the planet. Ford's early success in imposing time clocks and square dances on the jungle soon collapsed, as indigenous workers, rejecting his midwestern Puritanism, turned the place into a ribald tropical boomtown. Fordlandia's eventual demise as a rubber plantation foreshadowed the practices that today are laying waste to the rain forest.

More than a parable of one man's arrogant attempt to force his will on the natural world, Fordlandia depicts a desperate quest to salvage the bygone America that the Ford factory system did much to dispatch. As Greg Grandin shows in this gripping and mordantly observed history, Ford's great delusion was not that the Amazon could be tamed but that the forces of capitalism, once released, might yet be contained.
Fordlandia is a 2009 National Book Award Finalist for Nonfiction.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best of the Month, June 2009: Proving that truth can indeed be stranger than fiction, Fordlandia is the story of Henry Ford's ill-advised attempt to transform raw Brazilian rainforest into homespun slices of Americana. With sales of his Model-T booming, the automotive tycoon saw an opportunity to expand his reach further by exploiting a downtrodden Brazilian rubber industry. His vision, the laughably-named Amazonian outpost of Fordlandia, would become an enviable symbol of efficiency and mark the Ford Motor Company as a player on the global stage. Or so he thought. With thoughtful and meticulous research, author Greg Grandin explores the astounding oversights (no botanists were consulted to confirm the colony's agricultural viability) and painful arrogance (little thought was paid to how native Brazilians would react to an American way of life) that hamstrung the project from the start. Instead of ushering in a new era of commerce, Fordlandia became a cautionary tale of a dream destroyed by hubris. --Dave Callanan

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Gandin, an NYU professor of Latin American history, offers the thoroughly remarkable story of Henry Ford's attempt, from the 1920s through 1945, to transform part of Brazil's Amazon River basin into a rubber plantation and eponymous American-style company town: Fordlandia. Gandin has found a fascinating vehicle to illuminate the many contradictory parts of Henry Ford: the pacifist, the internationalist, the virulent anti-Semite, the $5-a-day friend of the workingman, the anti-union crusader, the man who ushered America into the industrial age yet rejected the social changes that followed urbanization. Both infuriating and fascinating, Ford is only a piece of the Fordlandia story. The follies of colonialism and the testing of the belief that the Amazon—where 7,882 organisms could be found on any given five square miles—could be made to produce rubber with the reliability of an auto assembly line makes a surprisingly dramatic tale. Although readers know that Fordlandia will return to the jungle, the unfolding of this unprecedented experiment is compelling. Grandin concludes that Fordlandia represents in crystalline form the utopianism that powered Fordism—and by extension Americanism. Readers may find it a cautionary tale for the 21st century. 54 b&w photos. From The New Yorker
In 1927, Henry Ford purchased a tract of land in the Brazilian Amazon roughly the size of Connecticut, with the intention of growing rubber for his automobile factories. During the next eighteen years, Ford invested a quarter of a billion dollars (in today’s money), but Fordlandia, as the place came to be known, was a spectacular failure, its plantations supplying less than one per cent of the world’s latex. In spite of this, the town had a golf course, movie theatres, Cape Cod-style shingled houses, and sidewalks dotted with fire hydrants. A “work of civilization,” in the words of one American associated with the project, it was Ford’s attempt to export the small-town virtues that his own assembly lines were breaking down in the United States. Grandin gives an exhaustive account of the project’s failure and of the light it sheds on Ford; disastrously, he was reluctant to hire native naturalists, who could have best advised him on growing rubber in the region.

"Midwest of his imagination"
By Amazon customer
This book offers a rare and fascinating look into Henry Ford's grand economic experiment in the Amazon jungle.

In 1927, approaching his 65th birthday, Ford sent his first two ships to the area. He had purchased 2.5 million acres of Amazon land - roughly the size of Connecticut. He planned not only to plant rubber trees, but also to mine the land for gold; drill for oil; and harvest timber. In addition, he hoped to bring his American-style sensibilities to the region: the production line; sanitation; buildings such as Churches, cottages; a hospital; a movie theater; and the idea of fair wages for hard work. What he didn't bring was a an expertise in growing rubber trees, or an understanding of the Amazon and it's people.

One other thing Ford never brought to Fordlandia was himself. Between the inception of Fordlandia in 1927 and Ford's death in 1947, he never set foot in the Amazon.

This is the story of the creation of "Fordlandia", amazing in itself. But, it is also the story of Henry Ford (a man of sharp contradictions); the struggles of the American and Brazilian laborers who worked in the City; and of the Amazon. It also speaks of a different era, when seemingly impossible things could be attempted.

Very well written and researched. Lots of old photographs. I can find no flaws. Highly recommended.

Riveting from Beginning to End
By History Teacher
One of the best books I have read on Henry Ford, and I've read most all of them. The author provides a fascinating rendition of so many topics, including the Amazon, Diego Rivera's Detroit murals, the booming 1920s and the hard times of the 1930s. The book is epic in scope, a really wonderful journey that takes readers from Detroit to the wilds of northern Michigan, the Tennessee River Valley (I didn't know that the idea for the TVA came from Ford!) and then to the Amazon. I fully recommend this book.

Fascinating, Well Written and Well Researched
By Sandra I. Oliver
Fordlandia is that rare non-fiction written by an historian that is a great read. Author Greg Grandin takes the reader on a wonderful voyage down the Amazon as he uncovers a magical mystery escapade of Henry Ford. Not unlike many of the recent forays into Southeast Asia and the Middle East, Ford's desire to claim the hearts, minds and raw materials of Latin America, specically Brazil seem very modern and familiar. He seems to have made all the classic errors of neo-colonism: ignoring the host culture, trying to impose an inappropriate culture and economic system, sending personnel not schooled in the language or culture.

On top of this, the Amazon was an unfriendly climate for those used to the cold winds of Michigan and the Puritan work ethic of the United States. Insects, diseases, "indolent" workers, lack of modern conveniences and the very essence of the area combined to doom Ford's dream of establlishing a town/plantation devoted to cornering the market on rubber.

Ford's efforts to transplant his River Rouge auto plant to the jungle of Brazil makes for fascinating and thought provoking reading.

Thane at Her Literary Peak
By Ellen McDaniel-Weissler
The first of Thane's "Williamsburg Novels" and the first I ever read, "Dawn's Early Light" is a master construction of plot, personalities, history and eloquent atmosphere. The main fictional characters interact casually and naturally with their famous (and factual) neighbors, and the candlelit or dusty summer day ambience rings true and compelling. Thane's research is not only above reproach, but she details battle scenes, geographical locations, actual historical characters, political and ideological viewpoints and dialogue so comprehensively that reading her novels is akin to dreaming your way (very vividly) back in time. Naturally the reader in 2001 must overlook or take in context Ms. Thane's inevitable early 20th century biases, but this is not difficult to any person with historical perspective and cultural awareness. Ms. Thane's main fictional characters -- Julian Day, the uncomfortable Tory newcomer in a hotbed of rebels; Tabitha Mawes, the child of disgrace and poverty who adores the new young schoolmaster with a very unchildlike love; St. John Sprague the firebrand patriot whose friendship with Julian brings him a rival in love as well as at long last a comrade in arms, and so many more -- are brought to life to the point where visiting Williamsburg one almost expects to bump into them in Francis Street. But perhaps Thane's greatest accomplishment is to have taken a host of Founding Fathers such as Washington, Lafayette, Jefferson, Francis Marion, George Wythe and others out of the category of glorified but wooden history book images and turned them into believably human presences. An excellent story, characters of poignant clarity, set into the backdrop of the American Revolution. An unbeatable book.

Old books are like old friends...
By susan B. Miller
The first book of the the "Williamsburg Series" I ever read was "Ever After", tucked away with other of my mother's books. I fell in love with the characters and England at the age of 12. After finishing the book I hied to the library and one by one picked up the other books in the series which were still available in the 1960's. During the 70's I visited Williamsburg three times, reliving the area through Ms. Thane's books. My greatest joy was having my oldest son choose the College of William and Mary for his undergraduate degree. The highlight of my literary life occurred when I discovered the bookstore in Williamsburg carried all of Ms. Thane's books, which were all purchased immediately. I have read and reread these books for over 30 years and now I am so pleased to have my daughter experience them. The Days, Spragues, Campions, and their worlds gave me and my son an incredible lust for history, both American and English. I still get a lump in my throat every time I see, hear, read, etc. anything about Williamsburg. Anyone who intends to visit the area should be introduced to these books before they go (although I do have to admit that these books are "chick stuff"!)

Dawn's Early Light
By A Customer
I first read Dawn's Early Light and the other novels in the Williamsburg series 40 or 45 years ago, when we took them out of the library over and over again and read and reread them until I still could probably reconstruct large chunks of them verbatim if I were stuck on a desert island. The characterizations are so good that even years after my last rereading I can keep the complex family trees straight without effort. The well researched settings are so well done that even today they form the basis for a lot of my general knowledge of American (and later English) history in the periods they cover. The story pulls you right in, the characters are realistic, lovable, and intelligent, the dialogue is witty, the writing excellent--the Days, Spragues, and in the later books the Campions have always felt like members of my own family. What could be a better indicator of a great read? I'm glad to have thought of looking for them on amazon and am pleased but not surprised to find they're still in print.

Who killed Whiskey 2-2? And why won’t it stay dead? A marine sniper team on a mission in tribal territories on the Afghan-Pakistan border, Whiskey 2-2 is ambushed by professionals using the latest high-tech shooting gear. Badly wounded, the team’s sole survivor, Gunnery Sergeant Ray Cruz, aka “the Cruise Missile,” is determined to finish his job. He almost succeeds when a mystery blast terminates his enterprise, leaving a thirty-foot crater where a building used to be ― and where Sergeant Cruz was meant to be hiding. Months pass. Ray’s target, an Afghan warlord named Ibrahim Zarzi, sometimes called “The Beheader,” becomes an American asset in the region and beyond, beloved by State, the Administration, and the Agency. He arrives in Washington for consecration as Our Man in Kabul. But so does a mysterious radio transmission, in last year’s code. It’s from Whiskey 2-2. MISSION WILL BE COMPLETED. CONFIDENCE IS HIGH. Is Ray Cruz back? Has he gone rogue, is he insane, or just insanely angry? Will he succeed, though his antagonists now include the CIA, the FBI, and the same crew of bad boys that nearly killed him in Zabol province? Not to mention Bob Lee Swagger and a beautiful CIA agent named Susan Okada who gives Swagger more than just a patriotic reason to take the case. Swagger, the legendary hero of seven of Hunter’s novels from Point of Impact to last year’s bestselling I, Sniper, is recruited by the FBI to stop the Cruise Missile from reaching his target. The problem is that the more Swagger learns about what happened in Zabol, the more he questions the U.S. government’s support of Zarzi and the more he identifies with Cruz as hunter instead of prey. With its hallmark accuracy on modern killing technologies, Dead Zero features an older, more contemplative Swagger, but never lets up on the razor-sharp dialogue, vivid characterizations, extraordinary action scenes, and dazzling prose that define Hunter’s landmark series. And with this installment, the stunning revelations ― both political and private ― will leave listeners begging for more long after the last bullet finds its way home.

*Starred Review* The idea that Stephen Hunter could write a Bob Lee Swagger novel in which the legendary Vietnam sniper doesn’t pull a single trigger seems inconceivable. Not that there isn’t plenty of trigger-pulling by others in this tale of a contemporary marine sniper gone rogue. Swagger, now in his 60s, is drafted by the FBI to find Sergeant Roy Cruz, who was presumed dead after his attempted assassination of an Afghan warlord went awry. The warlord has now changed sides and is being groomed as “our man in Kabul,” but the resurfaced Cruz isn’t buying the conversion and appears determined to finish his original mission. Swagger, charged with stopping any attempt on the Afghan leader’s life, soon finds himself sympathizing with his fellow sniper and convinced that CIA generals are behind a secret program to ramp up the war on terror. It’s a juicy premise, which Hunter admits adapting from Patrick Alexander’s 1977 Death of a Thin-Skinned Animal; transformed to a contemporary setting, it evokes the government-treachery themes of 24 but does so with less cartoony derring-do and a considerably more nuanced exploration of the psychology of the soldier. Only the revelation of a connection between Swagger and Cruz seems a bit artificial, but this is a top-notch thriller all the same, showing that Bob the Nailer is just as (well, almost as) compelling a hero without his guns. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: I, Sniper, Hunter’s previous Swagger novel (85,000 hardcovers in print), remained on the New York Times best-seller list longer than any of his previous novels, and this one will ride the same wave. --Bill Ott

“[A] juicy premise, which Hunter admits adapting from Patrick Alexander’s 1977 "Death of a Thin-Skinned Animal"; transformed to a contemporary setting, it evokes the government-treachery themes of ‘24’ but does so with less cartoony derring-do and a considerably more nuanced exploration of the psychology of the soldier. . . . A top-notch thriller.”

"Stephen Hunter's brilliantly realized action tale "Dead Zero" sets a sniper to catch a sniper. And it should come as no surprise that the sniper doing the catching is none other than Hunter's seminal series hero Bob Lee Swagger. . . . Once again Swagger hits the bull's-eye and so does Hunter. Master of the modern gunfighter tale, he isn't just the best action writer of this generation, but the best of any."--"The Providence Journal"

"It's probably no accident that the hero of Stephen Hunter's "Dead Zero" is named Bob Lee Swagger. Few authors, of any genre, write with as much swagger and verve as film-critic-turned-thriller-bestseller Hunter. . . . As expected, Hunter once again writes with a brutal beauty."--"Ft. Worth Star Telegram"

"Reading a Bob Lee Swagger novel is like visiting your favorite uncle, the one with the mysterious limp, the locked gun safe, and whose wild tales are often truncated by your concerned parents...It's a complicated story with the usual twists and spinouts and double-crosses, but what lifts it above the fray is its smarts and its broad cast of decently drawn characters."--"Chicago Sun-Times"

"Stephen Hunter's Bob Lee Swagger is getting to be almost as popular as James Lee Burke's Dave Robicheaux or Lee Child's Jack Reacher series. This 'old coot, ' as Swagger calls himself, has a staying power that won't quit. . . . Bob Lee Swagger and his marine hero dad Earl are super soldiers in the world of fiction. . . . In "Dead Zero", Swagger uncharacteristically hunts with the pack. And he doesn't like it one bit. There's a marine sniper out there who just won't die. He mirrors Swagger in his talent and intensity. His name is Ray Cruz . . . "Dead Zero" is packed with Hunter's patented action sequences, great character studies and sinister villains working on their doctorate in Power. Here's hoping we see more of the unstoppable Ray Cruz. He'd make a fitting successor in Hunter's army elite."--Madison County Herald.com

"Hunter, 64, is the longtime (and Pulitzer Prize-winning) film critic for "The Baltimore Sun" and "The Washington Post", and the Swaggers--Bob and his father, Earl--are his most memorable creations. . . . As the latest adventure opens, Ray Cruz--a much younger and equally gifted Marine sniper--is tracking Ibrahim Zarzi, a corrupt Afghan politician nicknamed "The Beheader" . . . Armed with his SR-25, Cruz is inventive, charismatic and, in short, everything Bob the Nailer used to be. "Dead Zero" is at its best when Hunter has Cruz in the novel's crosshairs." . . . I can only hope it's the novel that finally convinces Hunter to flesh out the history of a new sniper and allow Bob the Nailer the retirement he so richly deserves."--"The Oregonian"

"Despite overwhelming critical acclaim for his seven-book Bob Lee Swagger series, Stephen Hunter and his novels seem to stay under the general readership radar. . . . The books are so well-crafted and expertly written that it's easy to forget they're adventure-thrillers."--"Sacramento Bee"

"The only book better than a new Jack Reacher novel is a new Bob Lee Swagger adventure. "Dead Zero", with a dynamite plot and riveting characters, is everything any action fan could want as Swagger, now hitting Senior Citizenhood, pits his wits against a man who could be a younger version of himself"."--Toronto Globe and Mail "

"[A] juicy premise, which Hunter admits adapting from Patrick Alexander's 1977 "Death of a Thin-Skinned Animal"; transformed to a contemporary setting, it evokes the government-treachery themes of '24' but does so with less cartoony derring-do and a considerably more nuanced exploration of the psychology of the soldier. . . . A top-notch thriller."--Booklist (starred review)

"Stellar . . . Solid characterization complements the tight, fast-moving plot."--"Publishers Weekly" (starred review)

"In Hunter's latest, Bob Lee Swagger stalks Bob Lee Swagger. Well, just about. If anyone could be more valorous, more skilled and resourceful, more uncompromisingly upright, and at the same time more downright deadly than Bob Lee Swagger, it would have to be Gunnery Sergeant Ray Cruz. . . . [An] intricate, interchanging game of predator to prey and prey to predator."--"Kirkus Reviews"

On the Mark, Yet Again
By Montana Billy
Well, Stephen Hunter finally has let it happen: Bob Lee Swagger--the sniper's sniper--has lost a step or two, and he definitely is showing his age. In "Dead Zero," the latest chapter in the BLS series, the bad guys finally get a leg up on the old retired gunnery sergeant.

The first time they get a handle on Swagger, they don't kill him. They could have had they wanted, but they were after bigger game: They wanted to nail a different guy, a possibly improved version of the old Bob Lee, when Bob Lee was in his prime.

Turns out that the bad guys and Bob Lee both want to get Ray "Cruise Missile" Cruz, but for different reasons. Cruz, a Marine Corps gunnery sergeant himself, was leading a mission in Afghanistan that was tasked with taking out a rogue Afghani big shot (nicknamed "The Beheader") when the mission went bad and Ray and his entire team were reported killed.

Trouble is--there was a survivor and he decided to finish the job no matter how long it took or where it took him, even back to the United States and a situation where "The Beheader" now became one of the good guys.

Enter Bob Lee. An older though maybe wiser Bob Lee.

So, Stephen Hunter has changed the game, and Swagger fans are in for a superb treat: He's given us what may be the end of a great run and definitely is the beginning of a new direction for his characters, old and new.

As always, Hunter unrolls his tale with the master's touch, pulling readers along, pushing them this way and that, building tensions to a breaking point, then moving to the next, higher level of eye-popping action and surprises.

As always, too, Hunter gets everything right, down to the smallest details: the gunfights, the dialogue, the psyches of the characters, from warriors to psychos. We get to check out the illegals crossing our Southwestern border, the government bureaucrats calling the shots, and the operators in Nevada controlling the unmanned Predator drones in Afghanistan that carry them out.

Hunter has it down right and he only changes the technical details just enough to keep folks from knowing things they shouldn't.

He also puts readers inside the heads of islamoterrorists, mercenary killers, traitorous government officials...vermin of all sociopolitical strata. You won't find political correctness here.

"Dead Zero" has lots of little surprises--some totally unexpected twists and turns, great humor in dark situations, fictional glimpses of real people in the gun culture--and a few big developments that should assure Stephen Hunter readers of many more Swagger stories to come, God willing.

Two thumbs up, and a trigger finger for good measure!

Dead Zero: Stephen Hunter does it again!
By Robert E. Cook
I'm glad to see that Bob Lee Swagger is back. I'm a gun guy and Hunter gives good gun, particularly for a film critic. The opening scene is a younger version of Swagger, a Marine sniper named Cruz, on the hunt with his faithful spotter for a bad guy, beginning in the hills of Afganistan. Hunter's character development is wonderful and the subplots are skillfully woven as the action moves around the world. The writing is superb; in the early pages, it seems you can smell the goats and their detritus. Strange it is, how Pulitzer winners are able to write so well. In any case, it is a great book from a great writer.

For me, "Dead Zero" was Dead On
By Alain B. Burrese
I'm a fan of Stephen Hunter's Bob Lee Swagger character, and I was excited to learn about "Dead Zero" a number of months before it was released. After finishing it this morning, I'm hoping Hunter writes more about the characters in this latest novel of his. It was interesting that Bob the Nailer doesn't "nail" anyone in this book, at least not from behind a sniper system, but it was still an enjoyable read and I have liked seeing where Hunter takes Swagger as he ages. He's not the same man who appeared in the first novels, nor can he do what he did when younger. To fill the gap of an almost superman sniper, Hunter does introduce another sniper that could easily be featured in a future book. Sure, there were parts where reality was stretched and certain conveniences allowed the plot to progress, but when it comes down to it, this was simply a fast paced action tale that furthered the story of the memorable sniper, Bob Lee Swagger.

You can nitpick about some of the things in the novel, but I don't read this type of book for reality or as an educational text. I don't go to action movies for anything other than escapism entertainment either. I like that he had the new sniper character shooting offhand, because when I used to teach at the 2nd Infantry Division Scout Sniper School, we used to practice shooting offhand at times. Now, we didn't have the skills this superman sniper has, but it is a skill that was practiced. (We were not raising are sniper rifles and taking shots in blindingly fast "quick draw" fashion, but rather controlled shots from offhand position without being timed)

The book is fast paced with a lot of action. There are some parts that are predictable, and other twists that caught me off guard and surprised me a bit. Hunter does a great job of describing things, but at the same time, sometimes I wanted a bit more development of certain elements of the characters and plot. However, you only have so many pages to work with, so writing a novel is always give and take as to what you describe, what you leave out, and how much development each character and setting can have.

The bottom line is that I really enjoyed reading about Bob Lee Swagger again. I like the character, and I like Stephen Hunter, and this book did not disappoint in the least. It was a fun, action packed yarn, that entertained and allowed me to escape into Swagger's world for a short time and root for the sniper heroes. For me, "Dead Zero" was Dead On.

What has happened to our culture? There was a time when we thought that we had all the answers, we knew it all, and we knew better. Now we act as though there are no answers. We wonder whether we can know anything at all, whether anyone will tell us the truth.

In an age where our sense of possibility has collided with our loss of purpose, So, What’s Your Point? explodes like a bomb, dismantling the notion that we can write our own stories and expect a happy ending. Fran Sciacca wakes us up and invites us into a sweeping story―God’s story―where we discover that there’s a point to each of us: We find our identity, and our purpose, our mission in life in the story God has written for us.

Wow, so many important lessons for Christians!
By Henk-Jan van der Klis
Fran Sciacca offers a perceptive and incisive social analysis - particularrly of American, and more pointed;u evangelical, cultural values. Somehow our point in God's Great Story has been lost out of sight, out of mind. Instead, the American Dream, politics, technology invaded churches and the lives of Christians. Sciacca analyzes and criticizes the developments since the pivotal 1960s. So, What's Your Point?: Realigning Our Story with the Only One That Matters, helps to find your focus points again, offers biblical theology to unfold the Story from Genesis to Revelation. Drenched in Bible quotes, razor sharp thought about authors, preachers, culture and our forgotten mission are brought to light again.
Forget the How to-books, the self-help section in your local Christain bookstore, the preachers and teachers that claim to know exactly how the end times will look like. Let Jesus Christ be your true north. Fran Sciacca shows a new identity ladder for people of faith: Adamic, Adopted, Abrahamic, Alien, Apprentice, Ambassador, and Advocate. The book contains lots of valuable lessons on being adopted into God's familiy, instead of being born again in it. It really emphasizes the importance of acknowledge of the consequences of sin, and the shallowness of "getting in", "pray a prayer, live happily and go to heaven" or the "4 points and a prayer" version of the gospel. Way more important is the restoration of shalom on Earth.
Whom you are worshipping may not be whom you are serving. What’s Your Point? contains an important message, that needs your attention.

Finding a Point
By Edie Carter
This book is divided into an introduction and three main parts where Sciacca discusses his ideas about our identity, purpose, and mission as Christians. The introduction was quite interesting as he discussed the history of the church in the last 60 years. He delves extensively into generational trends that affect the church. This is a great time to read those historical facts as Christians become divided on social issues of our time. Sciacca also discusses the effect of technology on the current population. He has obviously done a lot of research on both of those areas and gives many quotes from others as he goes along.

As the title references, this book focuses on Sciacca's ideas of what we should be asking ourselves as Christians. We are no longer in what he calls the narcissistic church of the '80s, and we've discovered that we need to be missional. The author's premise is that we must look back before we can look forward to discover our purpose.

This book is worth the read. It is a bit wordy for me, but you can't say Sciacca isn't thorough! Many pages are full of quotes from the Bible, other authors, and other sources. He makes his points clearly and takes the time to back them up. If you feel adrift in your purpose in God's plan, this book will get you started asking the right questions.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.

What is your purpose?
By PhillipCole
What is your point? Why are you here? We seek to find our place in the world, but that may not be all it's cracked up to be. It's time to step back and look at what we are pursuing in life. Fran Sciacca lends his experience and observations in So, What's Your Point?

Sciacca brings up that many people have been chasing the wrong purpose. There are many cheap substitutions out there, but we can only get our true purpose from God. It is time that we stop trying to make ourselves known and start letting God be seen in us.

Using simple language and concepts, Sciacca shows how we can turn away from what society says our purpose is, and instead seek what is truly important. He splits the book into three parts: identity, purpose, and mission. In order to be purposeful, we need to know who we are, not what we do, but who we are. Then we have to know our purpose and how to fulfil it.

Though there is nothing complex in this book, it is not something to just breeze through. There is so much information in it you will need to take time to pause and reflect, especially on where you need to make changes. So, What's Your Point is about something that all people, even Christians, face. It isn't so much about new vs. old, but about what is true and right.

I received a free copy of this book from Tyndale Book Publishers in exchange for this review.

The best book I have read on diesel systems
By Amazon Customer
This book very thoroughly explains the functions of the diesel injection systems. I would guess you could say Bosch wrote the book on diesel injection and this is the book.

There seems to be something odd about some of the wording in the book. I guess it is the translation. I found if I would ask what other words could be substituted, it made it clear. Example: I would substitute the word 'power' where the book uses 'torque'. This makes the book a little slow to read, but once you get the knack of it, you will find the book very informative in understanding the systems.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone wanting to understand diesel systems better. This explains how and why things work, not just what things do.

I only gave it four starts because of the translation. Everything else is there.

What you need to know about Diesel and more
By Gan Jia Jye
The book is about modern diesel engine technology from Bosch‘s knowledge base. It clears the confusion and misconception about Common Rail technology as compared to other diesel technology. Most of the diesel injection technologies on the market today are explained with the aid of diagrams.
