I have seen a lot of tattoo learning or apprentice style books, this one is very direct and to the point - gets it done in a text book style. Easy to read. I run a tattoo school on the East coast - and I require all the students who complete my 6 month intro course to read this. The only way you can really learn to tattoo is from an apprenticeship - we just try to prep them for a fast track into the apprenticeship so they can focus on their artwork and this book really helps us get them on track. Trying to keep this relatively brief, I think its only right to give a bit of background as to where this reveiw comes from. I'm an artist in other mediums that has supported myself nicely for over
20 years,but have always been extremely interested in tattooing and beautification of the body. Unfortunatly still to this day many in the tattoo field want to make it seem as if the art form is some
secret, mysterious and unattainable cult that can only be bestowed upon those few who are chosen to "pay their dues" by the "old school" method of being an indentured slave for some time period.
Apprentiseship is not the same thing as slavery. I started late and couldn't afford that luxury. So I tried to learn and read and research and practice as much as I could and still do.
With all that said, the reason Mr Jordan gets my 5 stars is for what he is trying to create. He's attempting to create a community of people that are interested in this art form so that they can get
accurate information, not only through his book, but by attaching it to an open forum on the internet. In other words, I believe he is being truthful about the art of tattoo. The only way to become good
at any art is with talent, learning and hard work.
I have studied many books and other information on tattooing and I don't think any get 5 stars for content. There are many different opinions, even between the more well known artists out there.
Sometimes the website can be a bit sparse and erratic, but he certainly gives you an understanding of all the basics and seems to be a work in progress. Combined with the book, and the desire and guts
to make it available to those who make an effort, I certainly say thanks and give him 5 stars!

Added note: he has been very helpful whenever I have contacted him on the website( I hope he doesn't mind me saying ) doing all this while risking his life for our freedom being deployed over in the
gulf.

Pretty good Info

I found this book to be helpful in many areas. I tattoo, but wanted to understand more of the technical aspect of it. This book helped me understand better how a machine works, & how to tweak my machine to my liking. You won't read this book & open your own shop the next day, but there is a lot of good information in all aspects of tattooing. Including how to deal with customers, drawing deposits, aftercare, etc. I recommend this book to someone who wants to understand their trade better.

IMHO - An excellent resource for the beginning artist!

It's only the second tattoo beginner's book I've read this month, but I personally found it superior to the first (The Complete Art of Tattooing - Erick Alayon). This book breaks down the art of tattooing into easy to follow fundamental sections. In the early part of the book it even defines a set of landmarks the beginning artist should accomplish prior to putting needle to skin. It's everything the beginning artist needs in their first book. It touches on all aspects of the industry and process of tattooing. I highly recommend it to the beginning artist.

My favorite thing about this book is that the author gives the reader a of list of retailers for equipment and supplies after each respective section. Like other beginner's books he stresses the importance of an apprenticeship, and informs beginning artists that quality equipment and supplies from many renowned retailers will only sell to licensed tattoo shops.

There appear to be certain lofty members of our profession including (rather astoundingly) a few members of the judiciary who still think cyberspace is something of a space oddity. They should only read this book.

Aimed specifically at the criminal law fraternity, Ian Walden’s ‘Digital Crimes and Digital Investigations’ will nonetheless be of interest to all lawyers who inevitably will have to deal with ‘high tech’ crime issues. In providing an overview of this indubitably vexed subject, this book, now in a new second edition, makes an important contribution to the still relatively scarce body of literature concerning this specialised area of law.

The first edition was published – would you believe – nine years ago. And in case there are still a number of practitioners and judges out there who need reminding, the Internet was long past its infancy even then, having been in widespread use at the time for at least ten years. Recently published by the Oxford University Press, the book provides an important update which will certainly be welcomed by criminal practitioners.

As the title indicates, the focus is on computer crime, more commonly referred to as ‘cyber-crime’ – a phenomenon facilitated by the ever-developing technologies of computer connectivity – i.e. the Internet. Now ubiquitous and almost instantly available, the Internet in the author’s words, has become ‘a key resource of the global economy.’ Largely unregulated (except in totalitarian states) the Internet has also become a key resource for assorted criminals and terrorists.

Author Ian Walden, who hails from Baker McKenzie and teaches an LLM course entitled ‘International Cybercrimes and Investigations’, mentions that the clients with whom he has had dealings, have exposed him to issues and insights that are not normally available to academics. He has also been a board member of a number of institutions concerned with Internet scrutiny, particularly on Internet safety.

The book, he says, may be viewed simply as a criminal law text’ ‘operating as a filter through which we can examine the whys and wherefores of criminal law and policy.’ It can be regarded as a computer crime book, or ‘a book on crime with a cyberspace filter’ -- in short, a book which focuses specifically on crime, as opposed to other aspects of internet usage such as contracts, trademarks, domain names and the like, not to mention ordinary communications.

As the author also remarks, it is obvious that computers ‘may play a part in the commission of nearly every form of criminal activity, from fraud to murder.’ The subject area is so wide that large chunks of it go beyond the scope of this book. The author therefore turns our attention to problems where computers and networks are involved, ‘either,’ he says, because ‘the legislation was drafted in an era before such technology was envisaged, or because statutory drafting has failed to be robust enough to appropriately address the use of information computer technologies (ICT).’ And there, fellow lawyers, lies the crux of the problem.

This is indeed a massive subject and those who crave further information on it will find research references aplenty in this book, including tables of cases, legislation and international treaties and conventions. Also note the four appendices, extensive footnoting and the ten-page bibliography.

Based on recent developments in digital and the current pace of change, it is anticipated that further editions of this distinguished and accessible work of reference will appear in the future, ideally at more frequent intervals.

You may already have this!

I just found out from my son that this story is the same as the 1st story included in the Ranger's Apprentice: The Lost Stories (Berkley Sensation) book. Fortunately for him (since he paid for this with a gift card he received) the kindle ebook return process is painless and he gets his money back.

5 stars for the story, -2 for not indicating it is a re-publish.

Great story, but a repeat!!!

This is a wonderful filling in of some back story in Will's history, but what is not made clear is that this short story is a part of the "Lost Stories." I was under the impression that this was a new release when I bought it. I was unaware that it was part of the collection of short stories already released (and purchased). If you have not read "the Lost Stories," then definitely buy this, but if you have, then "Death of a Hero" is part of that collection.

Great short story, but if you have Flanagan's The Lost Stories, then this is already contained in it. I don't have the book and bought it to have the e-version of this story. It is my favorite story of the collection. It is the story of how Halt met Will at the very beginning. You'll have to read it if you want to learn more.

"First Dates Are Hell" from Vampires Gone Wild (Supernatural Underground) ( 1 of 4 stories)

NOTE: This review covers the story of the whole trilogy without any spoilers (I hope) since this is really one long exceptionally good story.

Violet is hardly normal, she has went from being a script-writer for horror movies to being a shapeshifter but there is something special about Violet, something that an old prophesy says will help all of the shapshifters in Dallas have a better life .... If she lives that long and overcomes more problems than you could list with Excel.

This series was a bit of a surprise since I had the first 2 books buried in my "to-be-read" stack of books for over a year and that is where they would still be if I had not been given a copy of Vampires Gone Wild to review and in that anthology the best story was one called "First Dates Are Hell" which was very good and it came from the Urban Panther series (actually in the timeline it was after the trilogy of books).

So after enjoying that story I grabbed the books I had, bought #3 and started reading and was totally hooked into this story, I am not sure if the author was writing a trilogy when she wrote Diaries of an Urban Panther but these 3 books have to be read together to really get the full impact (who wants to read 1 book of the Lord of the Rings?) and while each book has an ending of sorts the real story that threads through all of them is the one that ends in the last book of this trilogy.

While I do not want to give away too much of the story, I can say it was one of the best reading experiences I have had in several months, but while I am extolling this series greatness I need to point out that if you are OCD about editing then book 2 may pose some problems since her editor must have jumped ship during the writing/publication of Claws and Effects (book #2) but I was still able to enjoy it and continue on but be forewarned.

The ending of the main story arc threading through all the books coming to an epic end in book 3 and one of the best endings I have seen in awhile to be honest. The characters were fleshed out very well, Violet was an awesome heroine and her humor was what made reading this series a much more pleasurable task.

Let me just say that as a full time reviewer as a hobby, I get dozens of free books every month and I went and BOUGHT all of these books after reading the story in Vampires Gone Wild and in spite of some bad editing and stumbles along the way, this story was so good I could care less. I give it 5 Stars not because it is an awesome piece of writing but because it was the best story I have read in a long time AND I liked the way it made me feel when it ended. You don't get many of those type stories.

My hope is that she may come back to this series (although blogs have said it was over) since I loved it but the ending was good enough I can live with this being all these is, get these books and enjoy a great story and ignore any stumbles along the way to an awesome ending. The story in Vampires Gone Wild was just a bonus to close a loop on one of the characters and it was done exceptionally.

I read all 3 books after reading her short story in the trilogy book. I enjoyed the story line. I felt the editing was sub par and took you out of the story. Entire words were wrong such as excited where exited should have been.

I received this book from the publisher via Edelweiss in return for a honest review. This book continues on as Violet Jordan is dealing with being the Prima of the Dallas pack. Violet has built a strong connection with all the shapeshifters however the vampire witches and elementals are all running a muck on their own. Violet is still having nightmares from Spencer from the other side of the veil. However this time he's going to come through and make his claim on the legacy that Violet has.

In this book the former mutts are starting to get their lives back on track, they are at the point where some of them are even dating but I feel bad for poor Shadow being stuck a dog forever, but maybe one day they will be able to break the curse. I like the romance and connection with the other characters of the book, and we really start to learn what Violet has planned for the pack and Dallas community.

This book like the other two sucked me in right away. I love Violet as a character she's not your skinny little blonde barbie but she's as she put it tall and chubby. I love her personality she wants to do right by the pack but she still believes that having their lives with families should be their first priority. The shapeshifter concept is unique because their are dogs, hawks, rabbits, horses, wolves, and of course the panther in the pack. It's not very often I've read a book with shapeshifters who are prey and I found that interesting. I also really like the chemistry between Violet and Chaz who doesn't love when the hero has a strong guy to protect her. The characters are so well written you feel like your their with them and I love reading a book that makes you feel like your in the story. I like that this book gave us a ending but with the potential for more, I'd hate to see it end but I feel like if it did I'm ok with it ending as it did.

About the Author
Leo Hunt wrote Thirteen Days of Midnight in his first year of college and signed with an agent the following year. When he was younger he thought he wanted to be either an archaeologist or an author; but when he learned that archaeologists didn't unearth piles of perfectly preserved dinosaur bones every time they put a spade in the ground, he decided to write books instead. He lives in northeast England.

Creepy Necromancy Tale With A Great Touch Of Humour

My Thoughts On The Book:

'Luke's just inherited $6M... and 8 ghosts that want him dead'

Luke Manchett is regular 16 year old boy, going to school and trying to pretend that his estranged father isn't the renowned ghost hunter from the TV. His live is pretty normal, he lives with his mum who suffered from debilitating headaches meaning he lives a pretty self-sufficient life, taking care of himself for the most part. Things begin to change when Luke learns of the sudden and unexpected death of his father and that he is in line for an inheritance from a man he barely knew in recent years but this is no ordinary inheritance, not by a long shot. Luke is in line for $6 million BUT it comes with a catch, a pretty large catch in the form of his father's ghost collection and the eight ghost in said collection are wanting to be free of their enslavement and the only way to get the freedom they long for is to destroy their master, even if their new master had no hand in their enslavement. Can Luke defeat the ghosts before it's too late to save himself and all before Halloween when the spirits will reach the height of their power and will have the means to destroy everyone and everything Luke cares about?

The Plot Of The Story:
I decided to request this title on a bit of a whim. I'd been seeing a lot about it around and thought that it sounded like a very cool idea for a book. Colour me intrigued so why not give it a go?
The story of 13 Days Of Midnight did not disappoint me, it had everything I wanted to have and a thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The plot is original and feels quite fresh and new and to have a teenage boy in the lead of this book and then giving him ghosts and necromancy to deal with is fantastic! Luke lives a normal life unaware of what his estranged father has been doing sine he left and his inheritance changes his life forever. The $6 part of his father's estate is what Luke initially focuses on, knowing how much the money would mean for his life and for his sickly mother, they would never have to struggle again but with the added twist of the ghosts things get very interesting, very quickly. Can Luke prevent the ghosts from destroying not only him but his mother, his friends and his town.... maybe even the world? Hmmmmmm intriguing, yes?

What Is There To Love?
When you read about this book you go into expecting it to be scary and creepy, which at times it is, but what you don't expect is the level of humour you get to go with it, that balances it all out, it is surprising but it fits and makes the book that little bit more special for it.
The ghost themselves are pretty amazing, they are so varied in their looks, their personalities, their demeanour, everything..... I mean a ghost baby? A burning corpse that does nothing but scream endlessly? Really? Pretty cool! Some of them are more gross and more malevolent than others yet all desire the same thing, freedom from the cage.
Both of the main characters, Luke and his new friend Elza where well constructed and I liked that their budding friendship/romance didn't distract from the story in the slightest and just plays nicely in the background, keeping the focus on fighting evil. Luke is the popular guy who begins to hang around the unpopular girl as he realises there is more to her than he though, surprise surprise! He friend begin to shun him and take the mickey but Luke stand up for his new friend when he realises that she is more of a friend to him than his old mates ever were..... again surprise surprise! Giving Elza the almost hedge-witchy means to help Luke in his battle was an inspired idea and gave the book and the character extra depth while Luke himself seems to be as ordinary a teenage boy as they come, growing up with only his mother, who is often ill and without the father that he wanted and probably needed around. He makes do with what he has but you get the feeling that he's really only drifting along, will no real plans for himself or his future. Being forced into this adventure makes Luke realise some truths about himself, his life and his views on a lot of different things, it forces him to grow up in a way he maybe shouldn't have had to just yet.
Kudos to Leo Hunt for the creation of Ham, the wonder dog! How he managed to give a deerhound soooooo much character is amazing and so very well done, he almost threatens to become the star of the book at times with his antics and his humongous personality!

What Is There To Dislike?
I was hoping maybe for the book to be a little scarier than it was but then again we are talking about YA and not full-on adult horror so it's understandable that it's full on horror and gore (although it would have been cool too!). I wanted a bit more of a scare factor, of the thrills that terror brings out in me as a reader. It's not the be all and end all of course but I just would have personally like a little more of the scares.
The main question I had by the end of the book was more of a question about Luke father than anything else. I am in desperate need to know why Luke father's turned to necromancy in the first place and why he felt the need to create such a power group of the dead in the first place, I know it was for power but for what end? Why did he even consider leaving such evil to his only son knowing that the ghosts would fight to be free and that his son is only 16 years old? All seems a bit strange to me and was not explained in much detail at all. I know there is going to be a sequel and I can only hope that I can find out more of what I need to know by reading that.

How's The Writing?
I liked it, nothing stood out to me as bad or unacceptable. Hunt has managed to give the book a good mix of terror and spookiness along with a good chunk of humour to give the story balance. the language he uses is simple to understand while remaining evocative. The world building is good for the most part but the mythology behind the ghosts and Luke's father's collection isn't as I would have liked it to be and I needed a little more detail myself. The pacing is okay but there is a period in the middle if the book where it got a little slow but as we got further towards the end of the book it did speed up a great deal and gathered a fantastic pace before the earth shattering conclusion. All in all Leo Hunt has created a great book with a good mix of the genres with the horror and paranormal aspects, his characters are well crafted, well written and emotive, as well as being terrifying, vengeful and malicious when it comes to the eight ghosts.

Final Thoughts:
This is light, breezy and fresh YA novel that takes the paranormal and the ghostly and mixes them together with a little dash of humour to make a fantastic and easy read. The idea behind the plot is a good one, with a lot of potential, and it makes for a rip-roaring good adventure despite the lack of detail over the whys and hows of the ghost collection. I think this is a tale for everyone and should be enjoyed as the light-hearted, yet creepy story that is really is, it's a bit of fun and an enjoyable way to spend a few hours of your time.
Would I recommend it, yes, I would. In my opinion it is worth a read and I will be waiting for the sequel to see where life will take Luke next.

Good YA horror tale

13 Days of Midnight falls more on the horror end of the YA paranormal spectrum. It’s not the type of book I read very often, but I found myself enjoying it a lot.

Luke Manchett has been estranged from his father for years, so he is surprised to learn that his father has died and left him a large inheritance. All he has to do to receive the money is sign a rather vague contract with his father’s lawyer. Luke hesitates, but with millions at stake, he agrees to sign. Then Luke finds out that his father was a necromancer, and that he has agreed to take on his father’s Host of eight spirits. These spirits go beyond creepy; some of them are furious with their imprisonment, and when they realize Luke has no idea what he’s doing, they determine to murder him and free themselves. With Halloween fast approaching, Luke only has days to figure out how to save himself, his invalid mother, and everyone in his town from these vengeful spirits. To do so, he has to master the mysterious Book of Eight and his father’s indecipherable notes with only the help of Elza, the local outcast Goth girl and medium, and his faithful dog Ham.

In many paranormal YA novels, the teenage protagonists find themselves in possession of powerful magic and manage to master it without too much difficulty. They might have to struggle a bit, but they’re so special or gifted that the outcome really isn’t in doubt. That’s not the case here, and I think that’s part of the reason why I found myself enjoying this book so much. Luke really has no clue what he’s doing, and even with the somewhat more knowledgeable Elza’s help, he flails around and winds up being put through the ringer. And, yes, he does eventually learn more about necromancy, but it’s clear that this is uncomfortable knowledge, NOT a gift, and is as likely to harm as help him. Even if he wins the battle against the Host, Luke loses.

One of the other strengths of this book is that at the outset Luke is really a very ordinary teenage boy, more concerned with fitting in with his friends and the girl he has a crush on than anything else. When he gets sucked into this horrible adventure, he is forced out of his comfort zone and learns that fitting in maybe isn’t as important as he thought. At the same time, at the end of the book, he’s still recognizably a teenage boy—just one who has learned to be a bit wiser.

One thing about this book might bother some people: there is violence toward animals. Normally that puts me off when I’m reading, but it didn’t here, for two reasons. First, the violence takes place off stage, so only the outcome is seen, and, second, it seems appropriate to the subject of the book—necromancy and murderous spirits. Still, readers who are very sensitive to that sort of thing might want to avoid this novel.

I’d recommend this book for anyone how enjoys a good horror story; it would be a very appropriate read for Halloween. There may be further adventures in store for Luke, since he finds himself making another bargain with a promise of future payment. If so, I’ll be reading.

Sixteen year old Luke Manchett is a popular kid at school. He plays rugby, hangs out with all the right people, and as a bonus the most popular girl in the school likes him. When his father, the well known Dr. Horatio Manchett dies and leaves Luke everything, Luke discovers that all is not as it seems. he gets dragged into a world of ghosts and necromancy and someone is always watching, waiting for his next move, counting on his mistakes.

I enjoyed reading this book, and the idea is great. However, I didn't find many things that made 13 Days of Midnight stand out from other wonderful books. I rarely read books written by male authors (although I'd love to, there just don't seem to be as many!) and this one was a refreshing read.

In the end I liked the ghosts more than the main characters. (I mean, what!) I understand that Luke is a typical teenager, obsessed with fitting in, but his trust in Elza seems sudden and poorly constructed on the writer's part. The ghosts get a much better development. The Vassal is seemingly trustworthy, but soon his betrayal is discovered. The Judge appears to only speak the truth, but his words carry more weight.

Elza is intriguing. I'd like to know more about her, motives, interests, etc. I think her original distrust of Luke also faded too quickly with very little explanation. I liked the plot a lot more than the characters, the storyline was complex and not always predictable. Perhaps the second book will act on the promise of this series.
