Best of the Thanquol & Boneripper Novels!!

You have Jeremias Scrivner, the human sorcerer from the first novel, and Lord Tlaco, the mage-priest Slann from the second novel, together planning a way to "fix the Great Math" by getting rid of a "miscalculation" by the name of Grey Seer Thanquol. I thought Thanquol's Doom was a brilliant way to tie the various storylines together, while giving readers a third Skaven misadventure.

I say misadventure because Thanquol is forced into yet another political conspiracy between clans by Seerlord Kritislisk -- this time the inventive Skyre clan, and the muscle clan Mors -- involving a war with the dwarves of Karak Angkul. Literally everything goes wrong for Thanquol; I had no way of predicting what was going to happen from one chapter to the next.

The POV switches between the skavens and the dwarves, but this time the alternating narration worked much better than it did in Temple of the Serpent because both views were describing the same point in the timeline. When you leave the skavens' perspective to read the dwarves' perspective, you are returned almost to the exact moment you had left off the skavens' POV, so you are never left to wonder what happened to either group while you were reading about the one or the other.

Despite his obvious negative traits, Werner has done an excellent job developing Thanquol as the ultimate antagonistic character. I haven't enjoyed a bad guy this much, since Darth Vader. Thanquol's Doom provides a lot of insight into Thanquol's twisted way of thinking, as well as showing how powerful he has become since the first two novels. Unfortunately, Thanquol has been so preoccupied with the intrigue of Skavendom that he completely overlooks how many other races perceive him as a very dangerous threat.

This was definitely my favorite of the three Thanquol & Boneripper adventures, the first being Grey Seer, and I hope the three novels will be released in an omnibus like the Brunner the Bounty Hunter: Omnibus.

P.S. Even Boneripper has changed since the first two novels. ;)

Good novel, but I expected more.

This book is the third one of the Thanquol series. Now he got back from Lustria and is set again in another scheme of Skavendom, but this time against the dwarves. Though the novel is well written, adding another interesting skaven character to the plot, Ikit Claw, and the pieces seem to match a delicate puzzle, everything being described in a fluent way that makes reading pleasant, in my opinion the biggest flaw of the book was the portrait of Thaquol itself. I expected a coward ratman, as it showed to be, but at the same time a vicious mind with a cunning intelligence, a plotting machine, but everything I saw was a stupid ratman, who succeeds in his schemes by chance or luck, he is a toy almost the entire part of the book, dimmed in comparison with Ikit Claw and his devious intelligence. I like Thanquol, but I wished his character was showed as a evil mind, he plays a laughable part in the book, being pushed from one side to another, waging destruction in his path, but against his will, he is a puppet almost the entire book.
So, as I said, all the book is well constructed, the scenes of battle well depicted, the storyline and the plot very attractive, but the personality of the main character is flawed...I expected more of Thanquol, but this is a personal opinion, I like to see evil and intelligent minds at work, and I expected that a Grey Seer as Thanquol would show this qualities, but it fails me and only what I saw was lucky ratman, who brings bad luck to all around him. Besides this, it is a good book, I recommend it for those that appreciate the warhammer's novels.

Thanquol is Back!

I knew that C.L. Werner wasn't done with Thanquol and Boneripper! I was very excited to see this book on the shelf and I picked up right away, I just haven't got a chance to read it until now.

I could go on and on about the things that make this book great, but I'd be writing for pages and pages. Let's just say that Thanquol is his usual self-centered self, he's plotting, he's maniacal, and he's egotistical as hell. In his eyes he can do no wrong and he is the pinnacle of Skaven evolution. Plus we have the original Boneripper back with a few new upgrades as you can see by the cover.

***SPOILERS*** ***SPOILERS*** ***SPOILERS***

There are just a few things about this book I didn't like.

#1 Thanquol spends just a little too much time having inner monologues about how great he is and how everyone is out trying to get him or make him look bad.

#2 It's never explained how Thanquol removed the fail-safe that prevents Boneripper from harming anyone from Clan Skyre.

#3 The battle scenes take too long! Seriously, the two main battles in this book take like 30 or 40 pages each. I love a good epic battle as much as the next sci-fi/fantasy geek, but these ones were just a bit too long.

I did like that at one point the dwarves were using metal figures on a map to represent the skaven and dwarf forces on the battlefield. It reminded me of the table top miniatures game that I played a few times and it made me chuckle.

Also the author does an AMAZING job of creating the atmosphere of the Under-Empire. From the smells to the visuals, you can practically feel yourself in the earthen, dimly lit tunnels as rats skitter by.

I am so glad I picked this one up!

I'll be the first to admit I adore Leslie Kelly's books. All of them. And quite frankly I'm running out of synonyms to express how terrific a writer she truly is.

SHE'S GOT THE LOOK is now my new favorite. It's a laugh out loud funny, sexy as all get out, plus it has a good mystery mixed in, too. It just doesn't get any better than this.

Out with friends one night and slightly drunk, Melody Tanner once made a list of five men she could sleep with no matter what. It was a joke. But now six years and one nasty divorce later, she comes back to Savannahs and finds out two out of the five on her old list are dead.

To make matters even more embarrassing, the number one hunk on her infamous list, Nick Walker, former Marine hero and cover of Time magazine, is the detective sent to question her about it.

I'm putting SHE'S GOT THE LOOK on a list, too. It is immediately going onto my top five best books ever list.

"She's Got the Look" is a great read full of humor and suspense. Melody Tanner is newly divorced and back home. Years ago she and her friends made a "men to do" list back before she was married and Melody thinks it's time to dust the list off, the only problem is that the men on her list keep dying. In comes Nick, number one on Melody's list, but the last one she really wants to "do" because she knows he could break her already broken heart. But Nick isn't budging, especially when it looks like Melody has a stalker. Wonderful journey to love. Read this book!

This was just fun.

This is the first of her books I've read. It won't be the last. I will be looking for the book written before this one, She Drives Me Crazy, as well as anything else out there by Ms Kelly. I enjoyed the people in the book, found the second love story in the book as enjoyable the lead story.

I will be looking for more of her work. Thanks for the fun Ms Kelly.

The vitality of the spoken word is essential to Native American cultures. Because of their dependence on oral performance, the stories, songs, legends, and ceremonies of a Native people often died with the last speaker of the language. Of the two hundred or so native languages in North America today, perhaps forty-five are spoken by over a thousand people, in contrast to pre-Columbian times, when there were as many as five hundred distinct tongues spoken by millions. But now, with the revival and heightened awareness of this vital tradition, more of the surviving literatures are being studied and translated into English so that they can be enjoyed and appreciated anew. Brian Swann, professor of English at the Cooper Union in New York City, has collected many of the new translations in Coming to Light, and in his introduction provides an overview, detailing changing attitudes toward the cultures of Native Americans, and the state of those cultures today. Coming to Light is a showcase of stories, songs, oratory, and prayer of the indigenous peoples of the continent. Unlike in previous anthologies of Native American literature, each of the translations is placed, through the use of individual introductions by respected scholars, in its appropriate cultural and linguistic context.

Fantastic

Readers interested in the traditional stories, myths, folktales, and other cultural expressions of American Indians would be hard pressed to find a better anthology than this excellent book. Swann edited together stories from a wide range of regions within North America. He included terrific introductions by excellent researchers and authors. These introductions present sufficient background information to learn about the storytelling traditions, and the commentary helps readers understand and appreciate the texts. There is also an extensive bibliography that includes hundreds of additional sources for learning more about the stories, storytellers, authors, and societies that are represented in the book. The stories, themselves, are magnificent. Some are fairly accessible to readers with little knowledge of American Indian history and culture. Other narratives are more esoteric, and they must be read and reread with great patience. As readers develop ways to read these stories, the wonder of the tradition lights up ways to think about the verbal artistry of America's first peoples.

A magnificent collection of Native North American literature

"Coming to Light: Contemporary Translations of the Native Literatures of North America," edited by Brian Swann, is an amazing volume. Approximately 800 pages long, this anthology brings together materials from all over the continent. Cultures included range from the Yupik of Alaska to the Zuni of New Mexico to the Iroquois of southern Ontario--more than 30 different peoples in all.
Each selection is preceded by its own separate introduction which discusses such topics as the culture and language of the people who produced the text, the specific storytellers, and translation issues.
The material in the anthology includes creation myths, animal tales, trickster stories, songs, and stories of birth, death, and transformation. Some of the most remarkable selections include the Wolverine tales of the Innu, which are masterpieces of bawdy humor, and the Yupik tale of "The Boy Who Went to Live with the Seals," a magical story of human/animal relations. I highly recommend "Coming to Light."

An Interesting Read

I read many of the stories in this book for a college course and I found them to be rather interesting and thoughtful. Many of the tales are difficult to understand at times, but that usually comes with the oral stories provided by Native Americans. I would definitely recommend this collection of stories to anyone who is particularly curious in Native American legend.

This Second Edition of Data Mining: Concepts, Models, Methods, and Algorithms discusses data mining principles and then describes representative state-of-the-art methods and algorithms originating from different disciplines such as statistics, machine learning, neural networks, fuzzy logic, and evolutionary computation. Detailed algorithms are provided with necessary explanations and illustrative examples, and questions and exercises for practice at the end of each chapter. MEHMED KANTARDZIC, PhD, is a professor in the Department of Computer Engineering and Computer Science (CECS) in the Speed School of Engineering at the University of Louisville, Director of CECS Graduate Studies, as well as Director of the Data Mining Lab. A member of IEEE, ISCA, and SPIE, Dr. Kantardzic has won awards for several of his papers, has been published in numerous referred journals, and has been an invited presenter at various conferences. He has also been a contributor to numerous books.

Survey, not how-to

The subtitle advertises "concepts, models, methods, and algorithms". Concepts and models, yes; methods, a few; algorithms, nearly none that you could actually code.
This book's strength is its breadth. It offers brief tastes of many topics. It discusses early data preparation, including reduction of dimension and handling of outliers and missing values. It emphasizes that different kinds of questions must be addressed in different ways. The rest of the book then covers decision rules of different sorts, clustering, neural networks, genetic algorithms, fuzzy logic, and data visualization. Each chapter includes references and comments on what to expect from each reference - a nice touch. The end of the book names a wide variety of web sites, products, and companies dedicated to data mining.
The big problem, however, is that the book is shallow. With a few exceptions, it just names techniques instead of giving descriptions that a programmer can use. For example, the discussion of missing data barely mentions the idea that imputed (made-up) values must be tailored to the specific analysis technique, so as to minimize their effect on results. There are exceptions, of course. Neural nets get a relatively detailed treatment. The author gives illustrative examples of genetic algorithms, but those were thin and tangential to data mining. The section on data visualization could have been much more lively. There is a huge body of visual technique, some bordering on artistry, that can present high-dimensional data to the human pattern-detection faculty, and samples are readily available. This book's examples were small and drab, though. Also, it completely ignored the research in auditory and tactile data representation, and omitted discussion of graphic design principles required for effective presentation.
What really bothered me were examples of sheer carelessness. A number of figures, including 4.8 and 9.9, contain errors severe enough to interfere with the point being made. Important relationships are simply illegible. Books like this aren't cheap - I would have hoped that the author would show a little more respect for the people paying the money.
This book may have value as a survey resource, but isn't for the reader who wants to implement the algorithms. Its bibliography is informative, but not a major asset. Indices of current products and web sites nearly guarantee early obsolescence. Look this over thoroughly before you commit your time and money to it.

Pattern recognition or machine learning, not data mining

This book can be used as an introduction to pattern recognition or machine learning rather than into data mining. Data mining does appear here and there, but mostly it is the classical pattern recognition and machine learning material (data reduction, clustering, neural networks) with very few illustrations from data mining. An introduction into genetic algorithms and fuzzy sets is also in the book, just in case, I suppose. If you'd like more specific data mining knowledge, look elsewhere.
