The KINDLE edition

This review is about the Kindle edition not the paper one. I agree the the traditional paper book deserves the 5 star rating. I purchased the book first and I liked it so much that I bought the Kindle edition to highlight, make notes in, and to keep as a handy screen based reference for my Pi based electronics projects.

The Kindle edition's a disappointment. Here's why.
1. The book has a great table of contents with a 3 level outline; chapters, sub headings under each chapter and sub topics under each sub heading. The Kindle edition only has a 2 level outline, no sub topics, making it extremely cumbersome, if not useless, as a navigation tool.
2. The Kindle edition left out the index. Really, no index, and no, the global word search is not the same as a good index created and edited by a professional indexer.

So minimal table of contents and no index makes the Kindle edition pretty useless as a convenient reference. If you don't believe me, try to find the topic section on Transistors using the Kindle edition. I'm sure you can eventually, but it's a PITA.

By the way, I think it's sad that my one star review brings down the rating of the paper edition. Amazon, I should be able to review the Kindle edition separately from the paper edition. Especially if they are substantially different.

Best single all-around book on RPi

If you're going to be stranded on a desert island with nothing but a Raspberry Pi, some interfacing projects and a single book of your choosing, this is the book to choose! Introductory/Getting Started material on Linux, Raspbian, basic electronics, Pi hardware, implementation languages and interfacing. The latter is particularly important given the rather delicate nature of the RPi GPIO. Includes a performance comparison of the various languages which, alone, would justify the purchase price.

Read it like an Intro; Keep it as a Reference.

An excellent book for anyone who is willing to put in the effort requred to learn the RPi.

This book covers a lot of area but be prepared to work hard if you read it. The examples are available for download on Github. The book is absolutely excellent. Clearly written with a great amount of detail, though the reader must realize there is a limit to how much info can be packed in a single book. Although beginners could read this book, I believe that it would be slow going for them. If you don't have some technical background I would suggest you look for a more basic book. This book covers topics such as RPi boot up sequence, Linux commands, hardware interfacing and useful projects. I'm an EE with programming experience in Windows and I found the Linux section easy to understand, but very slow going, due to the vastness of Linux. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in putting in the effort required to really learn the RPi and how to interface to other computers.

Most of the chapters have been modified in one way or another; sections on modern environments have been expanded and some of the case histories have been extensively modified and, for the Captain 'reef', completely rewritten.

Euny Hong is a journalist and author with international experience in web, print, and television news. Her work has appeared in the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal Europe, International Herald Tribune, New Republic, Boston Globe, and The Forward. She is the author of one previous book, the novel Kept: A Comedy of Sex and Manners. She is fluent in English, French, German, and Korean.

Quick, breezy and informative read on the remarkable rise of Korea powered by its seductive pop-culture

Interesting book covering the remarkable transformation of Korea from relative poverty (in the 1980's) to a major Asian economy now. The author is a Korean American who moved back to Korea with her parents in 1985, to the (in)famous Gangnam neighborhood of Seoul.

Her main thesis is that 'han' (a Korean term roughly meaning the collective fury against fate) and national shame are the two biggest factors in transforming Korea. These two qualities compelled the government to function as a giant corporation with 50 million employees (as she puts it) to consciously rebrand Korea's image abroad.

Consequently it invested money in pop culture, actively encouraging formation and dissemination of K-pop acts, Korean soap operas, and Korean films, all of which enjoy very high popularity in Japan, Europe and parts of Asia today. Samsung, today an international tech giant, was once reviled as 'Samsuck' and also made a herculean effort to improve the quality of its products.

I learned some pretty cool new info from the book. For e.g.: way before Psy became an international icon on the heels of 'Gangnam Style', a trio of sisters called the Kim sisters were highly successful entertainers in the 1960's, appearing in Vegas and on the Ed Sullivan show dozens of times.

The author criticizes Korean culture, mainly for what she sees as repression of originality and putting undue emphasis on hierarchy and elaborate rituals. But she also acknowledges that this 'voluntary coercion' has probably made the country's rise easier.

Of course with a book that makes bold claims such as these, you are bound to find tenuous arguments and strawmen. If you remind yourself that this is not a serious treatise but an entertaining book that offers good socio-cultural commentary, you will find it enjoyable.

Good Read, but Shoddy Journalism

This book is fun and informative for those who know little about contemporary Korea, but its by no means a masterpiece of pop culture writing. Euny Hong's book is well written and a breeze to read, it takes maybe 6 hours to get through the 250 or so pages. The reason its so easy to read is because there really isn't a whole lot going on in the book besides a statement of facts. Hong's writing is clean and palatable, but the book lacks any real analysis besides "the Korean government is behind many trends that appear to be spontaneous creative efforts." This is a dangerous argument, and Hong is careful to mostly claim a correlation between government involvement and industrial success in Korea and not always causation. Still, this questionable claim (William Easterly and other state-led development dissidents would have a series problem with Hong's portrayal of the Korean economic miracle) is the only thing approaching an argument or catharsis, and its pretty half-assed. Overall, the book seems rushed. It came out right after Gangnam Style became the number one video on Youtube, and talks about Psy extensively. Clearly the writing process was not a drawn-out affair full of revisions. This becomes obvious when one notices the frequent small errors that could have been corrected with a quick Google search. For example:

Hong says that Kim Jong-Un was the number one buy of Hennessy whiskey. Hennessy only makes cognac, not whiskey.
Hong says that Eminem is the only American artist who made a song about their parents. A quick google search of "mama song" or "mom song" and "rapper" would come up with results by Kayny West or Tupac that are not dissimilar to Psy's "Father."
Hong says Starcraft 2 is a role-playing game. It's a real time strategy game.

These problems, among others, are obviously not serious but they are indicative a general problem of a serious lack of factual and academic scrutiny. This is a non-fiction book of about 250 pages, yet there are less than 100 notations in the back, most of them online articles. Euny Hong is a good writer and can clearly produce good work, but this book was clearly churned out way too quick. However, this is a good book for those who want to quickly gain an understanding of the importance and spread of Korean culture in a way that is enjoyable to read.

Amazing book!

As someone who isn't Korean but has lived in Korea, eats their food, reads their literature, watches their movies and dramas this book held so many great surprises and information. This is what I wanted to know about Korea but didn't know to ask. After finishing this this book I'm hooked on Kpop too. Hong does a fantastic job of weaving relevant history and Korean culture with the new wave of Korean entertainment industry that has swept Asia and is now creeping onto the shores of the US. A must read for anyone interested in Korea.

VIDYAMALA BURCH is founder and codirector of Breathworks, an organization offering mindfulness-based and compassion-based approaches to living well with chronic pain, illness, and stress. There are Breathworks teachers in over 15 countries. She is the author of Living Well with Pain and Illness which is based on her acclaimed Breathworks program.
DANNY PENMAN, PhD, is an award-winning journalist and author who has worked for the BBC, The Independent, and writes for the London Daily Mail. He is coauthor of the bestselling Mindfulness: An Eight-Week Plan for Finding Peace in a Frantic World.

Finally! Pain free - at least at times.

I have suffered referred pain from an old neck injury for about six years now. I've given up on the nerve pain drugs that make you too spaced out to do anything, the shots are dangerous, and the PT only takes care of so much. Meditation and Mindfulness are helping me immensely, relax the tense bracing muscles, relax my jaw and reduce my headaches. This seems a much better treatment for me then all the things I've tried before.

Excellent book. Very good meditation CD included.

Don't buy Kindle version thinking you will get narration or "audio/video content" as advertised

This review is not about the book's content but only the Kindle edition with its promise of "audio-video content."

The above advertising is misleading. It makes it sound like you will get narration & you don't. I am not sure what if any audio content you DO get - I did not find any whatsoever inside Kindle when I ordered the ebook. I have contacted Amazon requesting to return the book for a refund.

A real solution to managing chronic pain

I just finished reading “You are Not your Pain” by Vidyamala Burch and Danny Penman. I wanted to read the book in its entirety before implementing the program. After reaching the end, I wish there were a printable chart available where I could, at a glance, see what is on my mindfulness agenda for the day. Particularly when reading the Kindle version, it’s hard to flip back and forth to see which meditations I should do on which day. There may be a resource like this already, I just haven’t found it at the Breathworks site yet. I can see this mindfulness approach as being quite possibly the BEST solution to managing my own chronic pain and depression and am looking forward to actually starting the program and following it as instructed.
