Easily one of the best books I've ever read

I'm prior military, so naturally I was drawn to this book. When two of my most respected supervisors and one of my peers ranted and raved about this book, I knew it was something special. I read it in probably three days and I just couldn't put it down once I started. It almost brought me to tears a few times because I've had some pretty horrible leaders during my time in the military, and this was the absolute polar opposite of that. I was so happy for the crew and the author's leadership. I would easily re-enlist if I knew I was going to be serving under a leader like the author was. If you supervise anyone, you MUST read this book. If you hope to supervise someday, you MUST read this book. Both of those respected leaders I just talked about said they both base their leadership off this book and I had NO idea in the 2 years I have known them so far, but it all makes so much sense now.

"A rising tide lifts all boats"

This is an EXCELLENT book on leadership and living with others who have different backgrounds and experiences from you. We're not all cut of the same cloth, but we're all human with needs and bring different experiences and views to the job. Abrashoff made an effort to recognize every person's value and seeks ways as a leader to utilize those individual characteristics for the goals of the organization. Clearly the military is not civilian life, but there are far more things in common than differences. Having served 4 years in the Navy (1971-1975), including 1 year, 5 months and 13 days (but who was counting) on an aircraft carrier, the USS Ranger, CV-61, I was enthralled by the Benfold's emphasis on individual search for excellence and teamwork. There's nothing ironic of the aphorism "a rising tide lifts all boats".

Abrashoff writes with an interesting combination of pride and modesty. There's no limit in to how far you can go if you do things to improve your company without caring about who gets the credit. Give opportunities to succeed to others below you, recognize the individual's characteristics, talents, views and needs and seek ways to incorporate them into the organization to improve it for everyone!

Decades ago my teenage niece gave me a paperweight which I kept prominently displayed which read:
"You're not hopeless, we can use you as a bad example."
At first it comes across as a put down, but to me it was a tongue-in-cheek reminder that everyone has value and can contribute to the group's success.

Fantastic, easy, fun book on leadership with great stories and insights that are easy to relate to the corporate world. I found this book useful on many more levels than I had originally anticipated, including leadership, management, coaching, and even parenting. First and foremost, it is an excellent book on leadership and does a great job of illustrating the various styles that can be employed in various situations. Abrashoff talks openly about many facets of the inner workings and command structure of the Navy, the various styles of command, and provides excellent insights about how he was able to lead in a way that could almost have been perceived as subordinate or disrespectful. He demonstrates how having clear goals and communicating those goals can aid in decision making, empowerment, peer relationships, and even help to understand and anticipate the needs of your superiors and customers.

The biggest thing that I got from this book (and I fully intend to reread it and take notes the second time through) was how to be effective when procedures, culture, and bureaucracy all seem to be fighting against you. Not everyone may appreciate Captain Abrashoff's style, but there is no doubt the rapid and impressive results he achieved testify to many of the truths he adopted and employed. As a middle manager at a growing company, this book has energized and inspired me in many ways, and has also confirmed for me many of the things that I have been doing or have wanted to do. I have also been awakened to the importance and the challenge of managing up, something that I have not wanted to spend much if any time doing in the past.

A great read for all ages!

A must have for My Little Pony fans of all ages! As an adult, I have been a little hesitant to read the actual My Little Pony novels by GM Borrow, mostly because I feel I would not be able to relate and were a little out of my age bracket. I saw this book at B&N over the weekend and picked it up, not sure what to expect. I was hooked the minute I opened it. I have to warn fans of the series, if you are expecting the Mane Six to make an appearance you will be disappointed (they are mentioned once and not by name). But the book does not suffer for that. Expanding even further on the universe of Equestria, we are taken to ponyfied versions of Naples and other cities, and meet a bevy of new characters. Of course Daring Do is the star, and this is a totally awesome book because of it. Eagerly awaiting for more Daring Do tales!!!!!

I really enjoyed this Daring Do book! I loved the Daring Do episodes of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic, and this book was even better than those episodes! It really got the feel of an adventure novel down! I'd recommend to fans of My Little Pony, or kids who enjoy adventure stories, even if they aren't really a fan of My Little Pony.

VERY ADVANCED

Like many other's daughters, mine loves MLP, and I do too. My daughter is 6 and starting to read on her own but this book I read to her every night. I couldn't believe the advanced words. I was substititing them with an easier synonym or explaining them as we went. This started happening so often it was almost every paragraph. The story has so many twists and new characters with crazy names it was so hard to keep track of everything and everyone, even for me! There is no lexile level yet I could find and I am very curious to see what it is. Cute book yes, but I feel it is more at a middle school level, and not for low level kids. They will get discouraged.

Despite the title, Darwin's Origin of Species doesn't really explain how new species are born. Scientists have been struggling with that thorny problem ever since its publication, and the recent revolution in molecular biology has turned up great piles of new evidence. Anthropologist Jeffrey H. Schwartz takes a close look at this evidence, as well as the more traditional paleontological material, in Sudden Origins: Fossils, Genes, and the Emergence of Species. He claims that the tide is turning in favor of "punctuated equilibrium"--the theory that species typically remain static for great lengths of time and then experience brief spurts of accelerated change--thanks in no small part to the discovery of homeobox genes.

These remarkable structures are the genetic equivalent of the proverbial butterfly wings that cause hurricanes halfway around the world--small changes can produce enormous effects. Homeobox genes regulate development and are remarkable similar between species and even between phyla--you share some with fruit flies, for example. By turning our attention toward embryology and development, Schwartz shows us that fossils can't tell the whole story, since much of it lies within the womb. Anthropology professor (Univ. of Pittsburgh) Schwartz's latest tome (after The Red Ape) is best viewed as a combination of three books that are only loosely tied together. The first blends changing ideas about human ancestors, a brief summary of their fossil evidence and a look at some of the dominant figures in archeology to provide a historical overview of human evolution. The second reviews theories about the origins of species while providing a somewhat idiosyncratic history of evolutionary biology from Charles Darwin to the present. The third, and briefest, offers Schwartz's ideas on how new species arise. Like many scientists before him, Schwartz argues that regulatory genes called homeobox genes, which were discovered in the 1980s, control developmental processes in such a way that small alterations to their structure can lead to major shifts in organisms, possibly even creating new species. Stressing the importance of an integrated approach to the study of evolution, Schwartz contends that "there is a very real need to return the study of comparative morphology, and especially development, to the fore of evolutionary biology." Perhaps. But his dense book is neither sufficiently innovative to gain the attention of most experts nor sufficiently eloquent to hold the interest of the general science reader.

A nagging problem with Darwin's theory of evolution has been the issue of "missing links"Athe sudden appearance of new life forms significantly different from their ancestors, with no sign of intermediary forms in the fossil record. Schwartz (anthropology, Univ. of Pittsburgh) proposes an explanation of how this could occur based on recent research in genetics and developmental biology. Crucial to his explanation is the role of homeobox or "hox" genes, which control the rate and duration of growth of an organism and its parts and greatly affect its adult form. As background to his own synthesis of how evolution works, Schwartz also provides a detailed discussion of the theories of significant figures in the history of evolutionary thought. This is a scholarly, intriguing, and significant work, well documented with notes, although they lack the convenience of numbering. Related titles in a somewhat more popular style include Peter J. Bowler's Life's Splendid Drama (LJ 11/15/96), a history of evolutionary thought through 1940, and Kenneth J. McNamara's Shapes of Time (LJ 10/1/97), an explanation of new evolutionary ideas based on the rates and timing of an organism's development. Important book, but too much history and not enough new data

Schwartz spends most of his book on the history of evolutionary theory, which is fine from the perspective of a historian of science, but then there isn't much of the book left for development of newer ideas. Pages are spent on Linnaeus but next to nothing on cladisitics; much detailed attention is given to detailed reports of the first hominid fossils found, even to Piltdown, but more recent findings are hardly mentioned, surprising given that he is even now editing an authorative volume with Tattersall on hominid fossils. However, credit is due for developing the thesis that the discontinuous fossil record is due to the relatively sudden emergence of species from changes in regulatory molecules such as the homeobox genes. Rudolph Raff, in The Shape of Life (an excellent book which Schwartz quotes) previously developed the thesis that macroevolution of body plans was dependent on these genes, but did not emphasize the discontinuous fossil record. Although we don't get to a discussion of the new ideas until the last 10% of the book, nonetheless, this whole area of evolutionary developmental genetics is of such fundamental importance that the book is worth reading. In the relatively near future, with new fields such as comparative genomics (comparing entire DNA sequences of one organism to another), and computerized analysis of developmental expression of complete sets of cellular proteins analyzed on biochips, the promise of reconstructing, at a molecular level, the evolutionary history of life on earth has begun. I'd also like to take issue with the reviewer who thought Schwartz "savaged" Darwin. He does not, though as part of his detailed review of the early debates on evolution he quotes scientists who do attack Darwin's ideas. And although it's true that actual research details on speciation and changes in homeobox genes are at an early stage, and that Schwartz is not a researcher himself in this area, again I think he's on the right track. For example, see the article by Ting et al. (Science 1998 282:1501)about a rapidly changing homeobox gene linked to speciation in Drosophila. Overall, I think the book is an important one, but could have been much improved as a scientific text by giving a broader picture of newer data and less emphasis on historical personalities, though as written it is designed to appeal more to an educated lay audience than to the professional.

Full of Factual errors. Theories based on poor background.

Despite the intellectual pretensions of this book, Sudden Origins is poorly reasoned and is based on a naive understanding of much of the science on which it is based. It is filled with irritating errors. Most organisms stop growing when they reach sexual maturity, but many do not. Chert and flint are not volcanic rocks. The fossil record cited by Schwartz is limited almost exclusively to hominid specimens. While this might be expected from a paleoanthropologist, it is rather limiting for someone discussing the evolution of species. Schwartz's understanding of genetics seems to be limited to the high-school version of dominant and recessive traits, a brilliant deduction for Mendel, but a gross oversimplification as we approach the 21st century. The importance of mutations in the genes regulating development, such as the homeobox genes, is an interesting subject of current research, but the effects are far more varied and complex than Schwartz indicates. Such mutations can sometimes cause major developmental changes, but this does not imply that gaps in the fossil record are explained by this type of mutation. Given his own lack of sophistication in modern genetic, developmental, and evolutionary work, Schwartz's savaging of Darwin is in particularly poor taste. Darwin developed the idea of natural selection in spite of having limited understanding of the underlying mechanisms of change. This makes his achievement more intellectually impressive, not less. Darwin mastered the scientific knowledge of his time and built uppon it. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of Schwartz.

The history of evolutionary thinking

Contrary to what is being advertised, it is not mainly a book about a new theory of evolution. It is above all a book about the history of evolutionnary thinking, endlessly recounting its major events and disputes. Don't expect any more a synthetic introduction to what is known on homeobox genes, though the book jacket says it is central to the new theory.

At Last, an Intelligent Book on Spells and Magick

This book is no joke! It is full of excellent information that cannot be found anywhere else. You can tell the authors spent a lot of time searching through ancient documents to make the material available to the modern reader. As well, Maria D' Andrea does a great job of providing angel spells that are more palatable to a 21st century audience. While Allen Greenfield shows the secret connection behind the UFO mystery and the magickal process. It makes you wonder if yesterday's angels are today's UFO occupants. In a time when the bookshelves are full of stupid trash like magic spells for teens, and The Twilight Guide to Getting Your Own Vampire Lover, I highly recommend this book for the fact that it doesn't speak down to its readers.

It's an amazing book! It makes the contacting of angels practical! It's actually kinda mind-blowing as well...I had to a break from reading it because of how powerful the stuff is. Warning: Do not attempt to use Enochian Keys or any other Angel ritual with an ego or disrecptful attitude. Angels are beings higher then us and they won't respect you if you disrespect them. You will regret it if you use it improperly. Angels are here to help us. Have a good heart and things will be fine. :)

Aside from the small scale of this paperback version, I like this book. It feels like a little cliffsnotes booklet that is packed with traditional British holiday recipes. Each chapter (holiday) begins with a little passage about the history that surrounds the festive holiday. Christmas takes up over 50 pages of the book, there are 128 pages total.

I brought this little book to the U.S. from England in 1986 and have used every year since then. I can't imagine Christmas without it. Finally the book fell apart from too much love. So glad I can obtain a replacement copy.
