"Following a presentation of the what, why, and how of Thinking Maps, the reader is treated to a panoramic view into schools that have successfully used this unique tool kit to bridge the gap from research to practice. Regrettably, the author's 'Thinking Maps' technology is not available to private individuals!,
By Lee Say Keng
Student Successes With Thinking Maps(R): School-Based Research, Results, and Models for Achievement Using Visual Tools
by David Hyerle

According to my personal assessment, this book is the third in a trilogy of research-based books written by David Hyerle, an educational researcher & founder of Innovative Sciences in the 70's/80's.

The earlier two research-based books are:

- Visual Tools for Constructing Knowledge;
- Field Guide to Using Visual Tools;

The author is very smart to use these three research-based books as a self-promotional vehicle to market his core learning technology, embedded in what they call the 'Thinking Maps'.

In a nut shell, 'Thinking Maps' integrate thinking skills & mapping techniques. They are based on our fundamental thinking processes: We analyzes information in more or less eight different ways: define, describe, compare/contrast, classify, break down into parts, sequence,
cause/effect, establish relationships between things.

Application-wise, they comprise eight specific types of graphic organisers (the author prefers to use the term, visual tools) to help students & teachers in constructing knowledge, organising information, solving problems & communicating with others.

The eight tools are:

- Brace Map;
- Bridge Map;
- Bubble map;
- Circle map;
- Double Bubble Map;
- Flow Map;
- Multi-Flow Map;
- Tree Map;

Additionally, the core technology also includes a proprietary software, plus videos & other training manuals.

I can sense that their 'Thinking Maps' technology has been influenced somewhat by the Whimbey method, developed by Dr Arthur Whimbey. He wrote two great classics, 'Analytical Reading & Reasoning' & 'Mastering Reading Through Reasoning'.

There is only one singular snobbish aspect of 'Thinking Maps' products: They are only restricted to schools for system-wide implementation. Hence, the technology is, regrettably, not available to private individuals. They don't even bother to entertain enquires from solos.

In my earlier review of 'Visual Tools for Constructing Knowledge', I had mentioned that "This book is more suitable for teachers and students, and not so suitable for business readers...it cannot be used to cover all kinds of reading materials in schools. For examples, a story grid - which is not covered in the book - would be more appropriate to shape understanding of literature texts; a time line or time series - also not overed - would be more appropriate to track chronological events in history textbooks."

I added further that "For the businessman, this book can be somewhat boring, although one or two of the tools e.g. cluster and fishbone diagrams, can be used to organise visually one's thoughts or ideas while reading business books."

I have concluded in my review as follows: "Nevertheless, this book is still worth reading, especially if you want a deep understanding of why we are 'visual'. Also, David Hyerle's tools and ideas are still useful for the business reader, especially if one is pursuing business management studies e.g. MBA, in the evenings. The visual tools can be useful in that respect, particularly for probing understanding through the text, and taking/making personal notes."

Coming back to this book, which gives a panoramic view into schools (sometimes, their promotional literature mentions 3,000 schools, others mention 2,000 schools, so I don't know which one is true & correct?) that have successfully used their core technology on a school-wide basis, there is even one case study from Singapore.

In this book as well as in the earlier two books, the author shares many stories from teachers, principals, & trainers who have adopted their 'Thinking Maps' to increase student achievement & revitalize learning communities.

In retrospect, the first book gives quite a good introduction to graphic organisers &/or visual tools, in addition to their own 'Thinking Maps' technology. Tactically, it explains in quite elaborate details WHAT visual tools are, WHY we should use them, and HOW to get the most out of these tools.

The second book follows up with more quantified evidence to support their core technology in addition to more practical applications as part of the educational curriculum.

I reckon, for a first timer/beginner into visual thinking, especially one looking for applications within an eduational setting, the three books are definitely worth exploring.

Readers should also read Nancy Margulies' Mapping Innerspace, which adopts a spontaneous, free-form approach to using visual tools.

Best book to discuss research on Thinking Maps
By Fun Life
First - buy directly from the publisher / author for about half the price. I am not sure why Amazon has it priced wrong.

This is the best book available to actually present research, sometimes soft and sometimes poorly documented (but the best out there on any type of mapping program), on what a set of eight visual primitives can do to improve student performance by using the primitives in Thinking Maps.

No book on the market can compare with the qualify of the material in this book. I highly recommend it to anyone who is wondering how student achievement can be improved across all grades and across all subjects.

This book is especially recommended for parents of home based / homeschool students. By using Thinking Maps students of all types can improve their performance in any area. I am using information in this book as I develop a course in "Creating Intelligence".

Of greatest interest to me is that this book shows how Thinking Maps has been successful with preschool children all the way through to a community college's nursing program.

This is not a "how to" book but a book on showing that the system works. To get the "how to" you have to look to other resources.

Authors' first foray into Psychology and the Law, but just as great as their forensic psychology texts.
By It's Me, Sven!
Curt and Anne Bartol have written several key textbooks in the area of psychology and the law, but most have been focused on forensic psychology, a field that is largely clinical in nature and emphasizes criminal courts. Psychology and the Law--Research and Practice is their first venture into psychology and the law. If you are considering this textbook just in the context of learning and not as a student (or instructor), I discuss that toward the end of this review, but the tl; dr version is--pick this text if you are in it for learning. Students will have little choice on a textbook, but the casual reader or the legal professional does.

While a bit later to the game than competing books such as Wrightsman's Psychology and the Legal System and Forensic and Legal Psychology: Psychological Science Applied to Law, 2nd Edition, Bartol and Bartol demonstrate why they had such a keen presence in the forensic psychology textbook market and why they are sure to make a dent in the more general psychology and the law field. This textbook covers all of the major topics that would be expected in a psychology and the law textbook (e.g., jury research, eyewitness memory, false confessions, custody evaluations, etc.) and covers many of these topics in more detail than in competitor's texts.

One of the nicest things about Bartol and Bartol's text is that they give plenty of attention to **legal** arguments as well as to the research. Many students who take courses in psychology and the law would come into the class with no legal background. They do an excellent job of putting the research in context. It is one thing to discuss how eyewitness memory works, but it is another entirely to explain how this might work from a practical standpoint (e.g., appeals, the rules of evidence, etc.). Other textbooks emphasize the psychological research on the topic, which is great, but they provide less context in the legal setting.

In my experience, many students are going to be partial to Wrightsman's Psychology and the Legal System as it is less text-heavy and written more like an introductory book. Like the Bartol and Bartol textbook, that is a great book. However, it is a bit outdated, and from a teaching perspective I feel that the Bartol and Bartol book contains more information that students can learn from. It just might take more motivation to read.

If you are a casual reader or a legal professional and just want a good reference on psychology and the law, there are a few handbooks available, but those tend to be written for an academic audience. Bartol and Bartol do an awesome job of expalining topics on a more basic level without insulting the reader's intelligence. It includes enough case law that a lawyer might make use of a particular topic (e.g., custody evaluations, criminal competency), and anyone just interested in learning would find the book useful. Eventually more used copies will make it to the market, and someone just interested in learning would do well to pick this textbook over the others available in my personal opinion. I have less experience with forensic psychology books, but Bartol and Bartol's Introduction to Forensic Psychology: Research and Application is also a good read.

What Makes an Effective Executive, by Peter F Drucker

An effective executive does not need to be a leader in the typical sense of the word. Peter Drucker, the author of more than two dozen HBR articles, says some of the best business and nonprofit CEOs he has worked with over his 65-year consulting career were not stereotypical leaders. They ranged from extroverted to nearly reclusive, from easygoing to controlling, from generous to parsimonious. What made them all effective is that they followed the same eight practices: They asked, "What needs to be done?" They also asked, "What is right for the enterprise?" They developed action plans. They took responsibility for decisions. They took responsibility for communicating. They were focused on opportunities rather than problems. They ran productive meetings. And they thought and said "we" rather than "I." The first two practices provided them with the knowledge they needed. The next four helped them convert this knowledge into effective action, for knowledge is useless to executives until it has been translated into deeds. The last two ensured that the whole organization felt responsible and accountable. Effective executives know that they have authority only because they have the trust of the organization. This means they must think of the needs and opportunities of the organization before they think of their own needs and opportunities. The author also suggests a ninth practice that's so important, he elevates it to the level of a rule: Listen first, speak last. The demand for effective executives is much too great to be satisfied by those few people who are simply born to lead. Effectiveness is a discipline. And, like every discipline, it can be learned and must be earned.

The nine essential practices of an effective executive
By Gerard Kroese
Peter F. Drucker, born in 1918, is probably the 20st Century's greatest management thinker. He was Professor at New York University and currently teaches at the Graduate Management School of Claremont University, California. Drucker is the authors of numerous books and award-winning articles. This article was published in the June 2004-issue of the Harvard Business Review.

According to Drucker there are eight practices, plus one, which make the best executives effective. Under the heading - Get the Knowledge You Need - he discusses the first two practices: (1) Asking what has to be done and (2) asking what is right for the enterprise. "... failure to ask the question virtually guarantees the wrong decision." Under the headings - Write an Action Plan and Act - he discusses that effective executives executive. They translate knowledge into deeds. The executive "needs to think about desired results, probable restraints, future revisions, check-in points, and implications for how he'll spend his time", or in short, (3) he needs to develop an action plan. Once the action plan is complete, the executive needs to pay particular attention to (4) decision making, (5) communication, (6) opportunities, and (7) meetings. It is about responsibility, focus and productivity of each of these practices. The eight practice is to think "we" rather than "I". "This one may sound simple; it isn't." In addition to these eight practices Drucker voices a couple of important messages in his conclusion. "I'm going to throw one final, bonus practice. ... Listen first, speak last." He also states that extraordinary talent is not enough and that effectiveness is a discipline. "And, like every discipline, effectiveness can be learned and must be learned."

Yes, this is a good article. It recognizes 9 essential practices which are essential to being effective. The good thing is that each practice is quite simple and possible for each individual, including non-executives. The main requirement is a lot of energy and discipline. However, these ideas are not new. I believe that most practices come from Peter Drucker's 1966-bestseller 'The Effective Executive.' Highly recommended.

An excellent starting point for Unix novices
By A Customer
I have recently fallen in love with Macs. I had been a Windows developer for 15 years. Occasionally I have had to poke around on the Solaris command line at work, but I am a Unix newbie. This book does a great job of laying out the basics of Unix for people who have little or no Unix experience. This book does not provide a "quick start". It does not go into excessive depth on Unix. But it does provide fundamental building blocks for expanding one's Unix knowledge. My suggestion to Unix novices: read this little book from cover to cover. Then you'll be able to take advantage of all the free articles and technical documentation that explain how to do the fun, tricky stuff.

Incomplete and unsatisfying format
By Mark Smallwood
I was disappointed in this book, but maybe I expected too much from a low cost O'Reilly title. Generally, I have found them to be quite useful. Unfortunately, this book is poorly organized for somebody trying to actually figure out how to do something complex in the Mac Unix. You'd be better off getting a good general Unix reference. While the major commands are described, the book leaves out a lot of the advanced flags, which makes the book only partially useful. Also, the organization makes very little sense to me, but for a rank beginner in Unix, it might be more useful.

Pretty good book for wading into the UNIX pool
By John D. Busteed
This is a fairly small book. It covers the basics of UNIX that someone who is coming from the Mac world will find helpful. If you think you are going to become an major UNIX geek, I would recommend UNIX in a nutshell instead.

From the Back Cover

Praise for Building Applications and Components with Visual Basic .NET

“Ted shows a great depth of knowledge all the way down to the underlying mechanics of .NET. The author’s depth in certain areas, like Events and Delegates, makes this a very useful book.”

—Gregory A. Beamer, Microsoft MVP

“The content in Building Applications and Components with Visual Basic .NET is quite unique; I don’t think any other book covers the OOP features in the detail as this book does. This book is a definitive guide for all VB developers looking to master OOP skills.”

—Darshan Singh, Managing Editor, PerfectXML.com

“As a whole, the book is excellent—clear, and concise enough while still giving all the necessary details.”

—Gerard Frantz, Consultant

“Ted does a good job explaining the various OOP concepts and the high-level view of the CLR and related concepts. I definitely learned some things about the CLR that I didn’t know, and I found it a good read.”

—Paul Vick, Technical Lead, Visual Basic .NET, Microsoft Corp.

“When Ted’s first book came out in 1998 I dashed to the bookstore in a Harry- Potter-esque frenzy. That book taught me everything I needed to know about VB6, COM, MTS, etc. Now five years later, I have the privilege of reviewing his new VB.NET book (and also counting Ted as a good friend). Ted has done it again: combining the deep experience he’s gained in his years working with DevelopMentor with his strong grasp of all things .NET, Ted has given us a book that’s as easy to read as it is deep, informative, and accurate. This is THE book you need if you want to go long with Visual Basic .NET. To quote my Amazon review of his first book: ‘Thank you Ted, you’ve done us all a service by writing this great new volume on Visual Basic .NET and the .NET Framework.’”

—George Bullock, MSDN

“As you move forward into the .NET Framework with Visual Basic .NET, you’ll find the material in this book to be valuable.”

—From the Foreword by Rocky Lhotka

Building Applications and Components with Visual Basic .NET is the Visual Basic developer's guide to the .NET framework and object-oriented programming.

The authors introduce the basic architecture of the .NET Framework and explore Visual Basic .NET's new OOP features, the syntax required to use them, and the effect that syntax has on code behavior. Readers gain skills essential to creating well-designed applications and component libraries for the .NET Framework.

Among the topics explored in depth are:

  • Writing software for the .NET Framework

    The .NET Framework is a development platform that was released byMicrosoft in the beginning of 2002. Using the .NET Framework is strategicbecause it allows companies to develop software that leverages Microsoft'smost recent innovations for building distributed applications. This platformalso provides features that make it easier, less costly, and more secureto deploy applications in a network environment.

    Visual Basic .NET is a new programming language that has beendesigned especially for the .NET Framework. Once you learn how to writeand test code with Visual Basic .NET, you will be able to take advantage ofthe .NET Framework's many new features. This, in turn, will allow you tobuild networked applications and reusable component libraries that makethe most of what Microsoft has to offer.

    For developers with experience using earlier versions of Visual Basic,some parts of the Visual Basic .NET language will seem very familiar. Forexample, Visual Basic .NET uses the same syntax for declaring variablesand for controlling the flow of execution using constructs such as If statementsand While loops. The fact that Visual Basic .NET feels like earlierversions of Visual Basic means that Visual Basic developers can continueto program using the same style as in the past. The similarities between versions also make it easier to port Visual Basic 6 code to Visual Basic .NET.

    While Visual Basic .NET is in many ways similar to earlier versions ofVisual Basic .NET, it is definitely not the same. Visual Basic .NET is far morepowerful than —and therefore very different from—any previous version ofVisual Basic. You should expect a significant learning curve if you are migrating from Visual Basic 6 to Visual Basic .NET, because the new language introduces many programming features that have never been part of Visual Basic. If you're migrating from an object-oriented programming language such as C++ or Java, your transition to Visual Basic .NET will likely be a bit easier, but there are still plenty of details you must learn. It is our intention to provide you with those details.

    Who Should Read This Book?

    Building Applications and Components with Visual Basic .NET is meant for developers who want to write applications and component libraries for the .NET Framework using Visual Basic .NET. This book has been written for developers who have previous experience with an earlier version of Visual Basic or VBA. It has also been written for developers who are migrating to Visual Basic .NET from C++ and Java.

    What Experience Do You Need?

    The typical reader is assumed to be an intermediate to advanced developerwho has experience with Visual Basic, C++, or Java. You should alreadyknow how to create a simple class definition that contains fields and methods.You should know why it's important to use encapsulation and how todefine certain class members as private. Finally, you should understand thedifference between a class, an object, and an object reference.

    It's helpful (but not essential) that you know the basics of computer science.It would be impossible to conduct an in-depth discussion of developingsoftware for the .NET Framework without talking about issues suchas scope, lifetime, the call stack, the heap, and threads. If you lack this kindof background, I ask you to ponder how things work at a lower level.

    It's also helpful (but not essential) that you know how the ComponentObject Model (COM) works. COM supplies the underlying plumbing thatallows Visual Basic 6 developers to build applications using componentDLLs. Understanding COM has made developers much more adept atusing Visual Basic 6. While the .NET Framework replaces COM with anewer, more flexible infrastructure, many of the underlying principlesremain the same. Some principles, however, have changed to make developmenteasier. You must also know about COM to understand how interoperabilityworks between Visual Basic .NET and Visual Basic 6.

    What Will You Learn?

    For the average developer who's become comfortable and productive withVisual Basic 6, making the transition to Visual Basic .NET will require anontrivial effort. You must learn an entirely new platform and becomefamiliar with a new set of development tools. You must also learn the VisualBasic .NET programming language. This endeavor poses many challenges,because Visual Basic .NET is much different and far more powerful thanany previous version of Visual Basic. Along the way, you must learn newconcepts, new keywords, and new syntax.

    The goal of this book is to help you make the transition to Visual Basic.NET as smoothly and quickly as possible. It first introduces the essentialarchitectural pieces of the .NET Framework. It then explores the new programmingfeatures that have been added to the latest version of VisualBasic. Here's a high-level list of topics covered in the book:

  • The .NET Framework and the Common Language Runtime (CLR)
  • Building applications and component libraries for the CLR
  • The Framework Class Library (FCL)
  • The Common Type System (CTS)
  • New object-oriented programming (OOP) features
  • New Visual Basic keywords and syntax required to support new OOP features
  • Programming with delegates and events
  • Using structured exception handling
  • Managing memory using values and objects
  • Naming, building, deploying, and revising assembly DLLs
  • Interoperating with COM and Visual Basic 6
  • What's Not in This Book?

    Building Applications and Components with Visual Basic .NET does not contain many step-by-step instructions. Therefore, this book won't appeal to thosereaders who just want to know how to perform a specific task but don't carewhy. While the authors sympathize with the need for "how," the goal hereis longer-term—to build your understanding of the "why" behind .NETand Visual Basic .NET.

    While this book focuses on object-oriented programming with VisualBasic .NET, it does not provide an in-depth discussion of issues relevant toobject-oriented design (OOD). You will be introduced to many new OOPfeatures and the syntax required to use them. In its coverage of these topics,however, the book focuses on the syntax and the effect that the syntax hason the behavior of your code. You will need to consult different resourcesif you want to learn about advanced high-level OOD topics such as designpatterns or modeling with UML.

    This book also does not cover topics related to creating distributedapplications. In particular, it will not teach you how to use ASP.NET or.NET Remoting. While the book does cover details that are important todevelopers who are creating client and server applications alike, you willhave to consult additional resources to learn how to make your applicationscommunicate across the network.

    If you're looking for a book with a great big example application that youcan use as a starting point, Building Applications and Components with VisualBasic .NET isn't the right book for you, either. Most of the code listings areshort, between 5 and 20 lines. When a code listing is provided, the authorsalways try to use as few lines as possible to focus your attention on a particular point. In particular, the code fragments often omit extraneous thingssuch as error handling. For this reason, the book's style doesn't lend itselfto readers who are looking for designs or code to simply copy-and-pasteinto production applications. When it comes to presenting concepts, the goalhere is to teach you how to fish, as opposed to simply giving you fish.

    Online Support for This Book

    I maintain a support site for this book at http://Barracuda.net/Publications/VBNET. At this URL, you can download example code that appears thisbook. Using the downloads, you can easily run, test, and debug VisualBasic .NET code that illustrates the key points and syntax discussed in eachchapter. I also plan to use this site to pre-release new chapters that I amwriting for the next edition of this book.

    As a mortal, I am far from perfect. The book's support site will thereforemaintain a list of errata--that is, typos and technical inaccuracies in the book. If you find an error within this book and you'd like to tell me about it, please forward it in an e-mail message to VBErrata@Barracuda.net.

    Acknowledgments

    A useful book is rarely the product of a single person. This certainly was notthe case as I worked on the manuscript for Building Applications and Componentswith Visual Basic .NET over the last two years. Many folks madeincredibly valuable contributions along the way.

    I would first like to thank Dr. Joe Hummel for joining me on this projectand helping me finish the book months (and possibly years) before Iwould have completed the work on my own. I thank Joe for his correctionsof my technical inaccuracies, for his rewriting of my damaged prose, andfor his overall contribution to helping me shape the story in this book. Ihope to work with Dr. Joe on many more projects in the future.

    I would like to thank Francesco Balena and Rocky Lhotka for contributingthe forewords for this book. I feel fortunate to have such goodfriends whom I consider to be living legends. The Visual Basic communityhas certainly benefited from their published works, and we all look forwardto more books from them in the future. You should also look for any opportunityto hear Francesco play the saxophone or hear Rocky tell a joke. Youwill not be disappointed.

    I also appreciate the candid honesty of my incredible team of energeticreviewers. My thanks go out to Greg Beamer, George Bullock, James W.Cooper, Gerard Frantz, Martin Heller, Rocky Lhotka, Jason Masterman,Fritz Onion, Ethan Roberts, Darshan Singh, Doug Turnure, Jason Whittington,Jim Wilson, Mike Woodring, and Paul Vick. I firmly believe that ahard-core critical review is a technical author's best friend. My philosophyis that if a reviewer has nothing bad to say, he shouldn't say anything at all.These guys certainly didn't let me down in this respect. Thanks again.

    I would like to thank all the technical people in the industry who havehelped to shape the way I think about software development and the .NETFramework. I will always be grateful to Don Box, who helped me so muchearly in my career. I would also like to say thanks to Craig Andera, BobBeauchemin, Niels Berglund, Scott Bloom, Keith Brown, Calvin Caldwell,Henk de Koning, Peter Drayton, Tim Ewald, Jon Flanders, Andrew Gayter,Justin Gehtland, Ken Getz, Ian Griffiths, Martin Gudgin, Stu Halloway,Simon Horrell, Paul Kirby, John Lam, Jose Mojica, Ted Neward, Jeff Prosise,Brian A. Randell, Brent Rector, Jeffrey Richter, Steve Rodgers, Dave Schmitt,Chris Sells, George Shepherd, Dan Sinclair, and Aaron Skonnard. There aredoubtlessly many other talented people who deserve my thanks from companiessuch as DevelopMentor, Microsoft, and QuickStart. My ability tosolicit feedback and to exchange ideas with all these people throughout thelast decade has been priceless.

    Last but not least, I'd like to thank the tireless staff at Addison-Wesley,who make publishing a reality. Awarm and heartfelt thanks goes out to myacquisitions editor, Stephane Thomas, for contributing so much energy andenthusiasm throughout the project and for constantly lying to her boss thatI was still on schedule. I would like to thank several other editors for theirassistance during the production phase, including Amy Fleischer, JillHobbs, and Michael Mullen. Finally, I would like to thank John Montgomery,Martin Heller, Stacey Giard, and all the other people at Microsoftwho worked so hard to put together the Microsoft .NET DevelopmentSeries with Addison-Wesley. I feel fortunate to be in such good company.

    Jaw Droppingly Good - A Masterpiece of Technical Writing.
    By A Customer
    I toyed with the idea of writing a really long and detailed review about the content of this book (like so many you see on Amazon), but in a nutshell, this book is a masterpiece, it's what all technical books should aspire to be, comprehensive, thorough, mercifully free of unnecessary flab, and deeply intelligent in its choice of concise and ingenious examples.

    It left me with the feeling that I'd been hit by a truck with the word 'clarity' emblazoned on the side.
    you won't be a .Net guru afterwards because .Net is Massive!

    but...

    it is in my view the best 'foundation' book of any kind I've ever had the pleasure to read, read it and then read Balena, Esposito et al, but I can't emphasize enough read this first, it is hearteningly and informatively brilliant. You WILL understand Visual Basic .net after reading it, after that go on to books that exploit specific namespaces like ADO.net, ASP.net, winforms, XML web services etc.. this book is not about any of that it's about the compiler, assemblies , types and the framework, the plumbing! this is anatomy class, surgery should come later, and as these things go, it's 'the business'!
    It just goes to show that there are still people in this world who really do care about what they put their name to.

    '****New Addition (10 months on, I've read it again)
    Upon re-reading the book I was struck but how it was even more useful 2nd time round, but also particularly by how economical and highly informative the comments inside the code are. They are magnificent. I've found it very useful when the author is illustrating a particular point, to show for example, the return value of a method call as a comment to the right. When the main point of the example is 'watch out, this does something you don't expect' the code becomes complete, you can understand it without having to run it. I do think however that you understand code much better if you do run it. The point I'm making is that writing great and very succint comments is an art, and one I think the authors have completely mastered. You can read the book in transit and still make sense of all the examples.

    A must-read book, even for experienced VB programmers
    By A Customer
    I can't be the only VB programmer who has been dragged, kicking and screaming, into the OO world - as I've followed VB through its update history. But in the .NET world OO is everything, including lots of concepts that I've used but never really got round to reading up on and learning from the ground up. Things like inheritance, polymorphism and delegates are obvious examples. And then there's the .NET-specific stuff, like boxing, value-types and reference-types, method over-riding and dynamic binding.
    OK, so you can get away with knowing "just enough to get by", but this book really does make it easy to catch up on the concepts and terminology - even if you are fairly new to programming. I found it extremely easy to read, sharp and to the point, and even has those nice disguised touches of humor. I can't figure out yet why the FetchSlippers method in my implementation of the SuperDog class still doesn't work!
    My advice: if you can't explain straight out to someone what boxing or polymorphism means now, you'll be a better programmer for reading this book. Well done Ted and Joe...

    It doesn't get any better than this
    By William G. Ryan
    I was looking at this book the other day and wasn't sure about it. I've recently picked up a few copies of Addison-Wesley's .NET Developer's series and really loved them, but thought "Oh boy, another VB.NET component book" But, when I looked at the cover, Francesco Balena and Rockford Lhotka both wrote parts of the Foreword and couldnt' have said nicer things. Well, I have everything that either of them have written and respect both of those authors blindly. If Balena or Lhotka say this book is good, it's good. Well, it's fabulous. Pattison is nothing short of amazing. The level of detail he covers things in is almost scarry. If you want to understand your art, and your art is VB.NET, this book is for you.. I couldn't find something to criticize about this book if you paid me to. Great examples, even better explanations and an author that can communicate to anyone - and can get his point across very succinctly!
    So, now I've now added Pattison to my list of Balena, Appleman, MacDonald and Lhotka as my favorite VB authors!
