Simple gestures and facial expressions convey Elephant's embarrassment at Snake's inability to catch a ball. Piggy breaks the silence stating, “You don't have arms!” and Snake dejectedly slithers away. On the next page, Snake diffuses his rejection by saying, “Hee-hee! Ha-ha! Hee-hee! Ha-ha! Hee-hee! I know I do not have arms./I am a snake.” Elephant asks, “But can a snake play catch?” The story moves from clever to cruel as Elephant throws the ball and hits Snake on the head, and the reptile's expressions indicate distress. Once again, Willems wrings maximum humor and melodrama out of spare pencil drawings and the simplest of setups. Snake, you see, is not like Elephant and Piggie—he has no arms—and this allows Willems to take on understanding differences, accepting shortcomings, and sticking up for friends. The latest Elephant and Piggie book displays all the snappy pacing and wry humor readers have come to expect of the Geisel Medal winning series, with a valuable lesson in friendship and flexibility tucked inside. Gerald and Piggie decide to play catch, but when Snake slithers up asking to play too, they are a bit dubious. "You do not want to play with me?" Snake asks sadly. "No!" exclaims Gerald. "We do want to play with you. / But..." "We are playing catch," Piggie explains. "With our arms," Gerald elaborates. "So?" says Snake. This awkward moment resolves with the three friends trying to play catch, with predictable results ("BONK!"). More balls ("BONK! BONK! BONK! BONK!...") isn't the answer, but then Piggie has an idea (illustrated by a compact fluorescent light bulb) that provides the ideal solution. Page turns and placement of speech bubbles are customarily flawless, yielding multiple guffaws, but this story also provides much-needed guidance to kids who are navigating the etiquette minefield of friendship among peers of differing abilities. Love all E&P books and this is an absolute favorite

We have the entire set. My kids are 4yrs & 7yrs old now. We've been reading these books since my older son was 2 or 3. The stories are solely told in word bubbles as conversations between the 2 main characters, plus a few recurring characters who stop by in some of the stories. We each choose a character to 'be' and then we read the story, which is simple sentences of easy words. I honestly believe these books were a huge factor in my older son teaching himself to read at a very early age. We routinely give E&P books as gifts, and I always keep my eye out for new ones and pre-order well in advance. It's a nice little package that comes out of the blue, and both my boys are very excited when the UPS man brings us a new E&P book that they've never seen before.

Our all-time favorites are:
Watch Me Throw the Ball - I love the moral of the story where the most important thing is to have a good time, even if you're not a pro.
Can I Play Too? - love this one because it teaches you to think outside the box and make the most of what you have. My sons couldn't stop giggling the first 10 times they read this one.

Toddler loves Elephant and Piggie books!

We had one Elephant and Piggie book that we got from library surplus and my toddler loves reading it over and over, so I decided to get more. They are cute, simple stories with higher concepts good for teaching toddlers. I enjoy reading them, too. It won't be long before I end up buying them all.

I HOPE MO WILLEMS READS THIS REVIEW

Several years ago I started buying children's books for the daughter of a friend, and because of that I started getting Amazon's recommendations. I was in a rut with the "usual" books I would buy, and so when I saw "Can I Play too?" I thought I would take a chance. Also, any book that I purchased would also have to do with animals (I do animal rescue). Okay, so I bought four books this year, sent them off and just got the thank you note. My friend wrote "she loved all of them, and especially Elephant & Piggy, "Can I Play too" by Mo Willems (he's one of her favorite authors! She even said oh - it's a Mo Willems Book! As she was opening she said I'll have to send a very nice note." I thought this would help another somebody who has no idea AT ALL on what book to buy a five year old. Some of the sentences of this review might seem a little awkward, but that is the way it was written.

Caution: PPB not the Study Edition

This review pertains to the paperback edition from T&T Clark International. The buyer should know that this is not the Study Edition Church Dogmatics, Vol. 3.3, Sections 48-49: The Doctrine of Creation, Study Edition 17 which contains English translations of those passages Barth left untranslated in his original from T&T Clark. The Study Edition is also offered as a Continuum Reprint by T&T Clark; easy to confuse the two.

There is no question of Karl Barth's importance as the great Protestant theologian of the 20th Century; indeed there are only a few in earlier centuries (Augustine, Aquinas, Luther, Calvin) of a remotely similar stature. Whatever edition best suits the reader/purchaser, no theological library could be considered complete without the Church Dogmatics.

I'm glad it's not a coffee table book

One of the biggest problems with studying art is finding books you can carry and read. Coffee table books are nice to look at, but I find that most of the time I don't even bother trying to read the accompanying essays (which are rarely comprehensive).

I'm glad I discovered the Phaidon A&I series, because I'm finally able to make a real effort to learn about art. Yes, it's hard to see the illustrations in detail, but the pictures are usually large enough to accurately depict the author's intention in including it in the book in the first place. If you find yourself wanting to look at a picture in more detail, it's likely available on the web.

Why it's good: At around 400 pages it does a great job at being comprehensive (but without being overwhelming). By the time you're done, you feel you've captured all but the nittiest-grittiest of details regarding Romanticism. It can be read by amateurs (which I most definitely am) without feeling lost in a sea of jargon or references that art students are required to know but the average person does not. And you can carry it to work with you to read at lunchtime.

Why only 4 stars: I'm not sure I agree with the author's choice in dividing up the chapters on the basis of themes, some of which are virtually indistinguishable from others. In addition, you don't get a complete picture of some artists because they pop up sporadically throughout the book rather than have whole sections dedicated to them. Personally, I would've divided the book by region (French, German, French, Spanish, English, American), but as I didn't write it ...

My other main concern is the lack of Americans. Yes, I know that Romanticism was largely a European movement; however the Hudson River School of Artists were largely Romantic in nature (pun intended), and the brief discussion of Thomas Cole's Course of Empire should have been expanded (and all 5 works shown, not just the central one) because it perfectly applied to the theme of that chapter.

One final warning: have some small understanding of European history between 1789 and 1848, as the different revolutions and events throughout are touched on as they relate to the art, because if you're unfamiliar with the July Revolution, for example, you may find yourself missing the author's point.

Summary: Ignore the fact that my negative section is larger than the positive; this book is a great and inexpensive way to become educated about Romantic Art. Completists may want to start with Neo-classicism, but if you're looking to get immersed in 19th century art (or art in general), this is a great place to start. I'm looking forward to reading Impressionism next (I'll come back to Friedrich and Turner, available in A&I form as well, later this year).

Great book, but where's the hardcover coffee table size?

Don't get me wrong, this is a great book. It encompasses almost all critical art and art history of Romanticism, and is complimented by a zesty layout and visually stimulating pictures throughout. But my one question is: WHY DO YOU PRINT THIS BOOK IN THIS SIZE? This book deserves to be two or three times this big... if not bigger. If this book was sold in only a 20'x20' version, you can bet that I would buy it. Maybe a good idea (editors of this book listen up!) would be to make full-size replicas of all the paintings within and sell this book as a series of giant tear-out sheets, so we could display these wonderful pieces of art in our own homes. Then you could keep the text version of the book in its original size and it would accompany the paintings. Another qualified idea is to have photographs or interprative sketches of the artists whose paintings we are studying in this book. It's nice to know what the people who made such beautiful art looked like.

Personally I would purchase Lancelot Andrews' Press's Combined Monastic Diurnal Noted rather than this volume, which only contains music for certain offices.

The Monastic Diurnal Noted is the brilliant work of the Reverend Canon Winfred Douglas, the renowned English church musician and pioneer of adapting Gregorian plainchant to English. An Episcopal Priest, he completed this Gregorian Antiphonal in English, containing all the Antiphons, Hymn Tunes, and Responses of the Day Hours of the Benedictine Divine Office (the seven canonical Hours, excluding the midnight office of Matins, this volume allows one to chant the offices using traditional Gregorian chants in accordance with the 1928 Episcopal Book of Common Prayer

This reprint contains the first of two volumes. This first volume includes the music of Vespers, the Little Hours and Lauds of Great Feasts. If one wants the complete set, the second volume includes the music of Sunday and Festive Lauds, with Matins of the Sacred Triduum and Matins of the Dead. There is on the market a volume from Lancelot Press that combines both volumes into one: there is something to be said for combining the offices although it makes for a very thick but hardback book.

With the liturgical reforms of the 1979 Prayerbook, the Sisters of St, Mary have updated and revised their Diurnal to reflect the changes in the Book of Common Prayer. Sadly, this means a loss of much of Douglas' work. However, as one will see on Amazon, there are a number of attempts to save this work for use within churches. Douglas was an outstanding historian of musical chant and a fine composer - his work deserves to be preserved

About the Author
Tim Walker's photographs have entranced the readers of Vogue since the early 90's. Extravagant staging and romantic motifs characterize his unmistakable style.

Born in England in 1970, Walker's earned a three-year BA honors degree at Exeter College of Art in 1994. He concentrated on portrait and documentary work for British newspapers and at the age of 25, shot his first fashion story for Vogue. His first major exhibition at the Design Museum London in 2008 coincided with the publication of Pictures.

He continues to publish and exhibit widely and The Victoria & Albert and National Portrait Gallery in London include Walker's photographs in their permanent collections.
