Good Practice
By There's still Hope
This book was demanded for a TOEFL practice class. It has a lot of tips and deals with each of the four TOEFL topics in detail.

Each TOEFL section is introduced in the book and starts out with more easy exercises and practical tips. Tasks are getting more difficult the more one digs into one section. Besides the right solutions for the reading and listening sections, this book also provides sample writing and speaking responses from students that have taken the TOEFL.

To conclude, this book is structured well and provides excellent hints and tips for the TOEFL. It deals also with the grading factors of the actual TOEFL test. However, this book was published in 2005, which makes it hard to tell in how far this book is still up to date in terms of the TOEFL test. If it was not for the purpose of a course I would probably have choosen a newer guide.

About the Author
Elizabeth Buettner joined the University of Amsterdam as Professor of Modern History in 2014, prior to which she taught at the University of York. She received her BA from Barnard College of Columbia University and her MA and PhD from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. In 2012-2013, she held a Senior Research Fellowship at the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies in Germany in conjunction with a British Academy Mid-Career Fellowship, and in 2006 she was selected to participate in the International Research Seminar on Decolonization sponsored by the National History Center, the Mellon Foundation, and the Library of Congress in Washington, DC. Her publications include Empire Families: Britons and Late Imperial India (2004), which was awarded the Women's History Network Book Prize and led to her being shortlisted for the Young Academic Author of the Year award by the Times Higher Education Supplement in 2005. She has written articles in the Journal of Modern History, the Journal of Imperial and Commonwealth History, History and Memory, the Scottish Historical Review (where her piece won the Royal Historical Society's David Berry Prize), Annales de D�mographie Historique, Ab Imperio, and Food and History. Contributions to edited collections include the chapter 'Ethnicity' in A Concise Companion to History, edited by Ulinka Rublack (2011).

Fun book. I fell in love with Charles Wallace in A Wrinkle in Time and he's just as great in A Wind in the Door. I never know what to expect when I read one of L'Engle's books. Last time it was Mrs' Whatsit, Who and Which. This time it's Proginoskes, Farandolae, and Echthroi (oh my). :)

A Wind in the Door starts out with Charles Wallace telling his sister Meg about the dragons he saw out back. Meg, more troubled about Charles Wallace's new bruises from being beat up by bullies at school, tries to push the thought of dragons aside. Surely there is some other explanation. Meg and Charles Wallace go off to investigate and find another adventure waiting to happen.

Most acting books are great, they inspire, feed the desire to follow your dreams and give you an adequate understanding of techniques, skills, etc that can make you a great actor. Great, thanks. But how do you actually apply it to advance your career??

No one ever talks about the reality of the journey you're embarking on. Whether you're thinking about getting into acting or a veteran, How To Be An Actor does exactly what it claims; it equips you with the (at times daunting) steps you MUST take to not only survive, but prosper as a working artist. You have to be skilled in different areas: understand what the director actually does, how the producers really see the project, (most appropriately) how to attack castings....it demystifies the industry and shows you everyone is just doing their JOB.

The book allows you to develop a confidence and comfort with yourself to where very few things in life will affect your "performance." "Being an actor isn't something you turn on and off" you have to live it every day! Some of the best advice I've ever been given. I feel it's made me "better" at life (a grandiose claim, but true).

The journey is difficult, extreme, and takes an immense amount of strategy to succeed...the book outlines all of this and gives you the expertise to accomplish and keep moving forward. It's real, it doesn't sugarcoat a thing, something we VERY RARELY see nowadays. Ralph really knows what he's talking about and I feel fortunate to come across the first book that actually tells me the truth.

Once you train and apply everything (or even just some) of what the book recommends, you'll never look back because the future is too bright!

A must read

It took me 2 hours to finish reading this book- amongst running errands and squeezing something to eat. I think the structure of the text was well put and gives aspiring actors/actresses a deep inside look to what it takes to be an artist. But above all, it reaches in a more profound way than I though; it captures the ability to make you understand yourself. It was unnerving reading at first because there were a lot of certain point that made me realize how negative I can be sometimes. I learned to have more confidence in my craft and in myself. Learning that it's okay to have a dream and that if it's not big enough, dream bigger! I really enjoyed it. Kudos!!

INFORMATIVE. A MUST BUY!

This book is/was very informative. It's very easy to understand the concept of a working actor and for a starting actor as well. It grasps all the tools that an actor needs. I have read this book twice now and it surely refreshes my mind. I am fortunate to have read this book by Ralph Kinnard, he's very passionate in what he speaks about. I highly recommend this book.
