Fiberglass and composite parts are commonly used in many collector cars, hot rods, Corvettes, and even late-model vehicles. Body panels, interior components, and engine parts are fabricated from fiberglass and composite materials (plastic molded or carbon fiber). While other fiberglass and composite material books have been published, few are focused on fabricating and repairing automotive parts, and this book concentrates on completing common and advanced projects at home in the garage.
The reader is shown how to use glass strand mat, woven fiberglass cloth, carbon fiber cloth, and hybrid fabrics for particular applications. The strength of these mats and ideal uses are covered in detail. Also shown is how to correctly mix the typical resins (polyester, epoxy), hardeners, and gels. Core materials, such as wood, foam, and honeycomb Nomex, are often used to add strength to various parts. All the relevant tools, including mixing containers, holding containers, saws, scissors, files, and shaping tools, are discussed. Constructing patterns to exacting standards from wood, Formica, aluminum, and other materials is essential and covered in detail.
Whether repairing existing components, fabricating new ones, building a race car, or restoring a classic, this is the one book to guide the reader through each critical stage.

From the Back Cover
Fiberglass, carbon fiber, and composite materials can be used to construct a large variety of automotive parts. Hot rods, customs, sport compact cars, muscle cars, and many other cars readily accommodate fiberglass and composite components. Fabricated parts such as air dams, wings, side skirts, and hoods can create a one-of-kind style and function. These exterior parts can also deliver improved performance. Hundreds of interior parts have been fabricated to create the interior environment, including dashes, gauge panels, door panels, consoles, and much more. And many owners of fiberglass and composite cars, such as Corvettes, need to repair a wide range of production parts, using custom fabricated parts. Authors Daniel Burrill and Jeffrey Zurschmeide guide you through fabrication of popular exterior and interior parts as well as common repairs. They show you how to construct molds for simple and complex parts, how to lay up fiberglass parts, and complete a finished part. In addition, you see how to construct carbon fiber parts, including glass strand mat, woven fiberglass cloth, carbon fiber cloth, and hybrid fabrics, for a variety of applications. To add strength to various parts, core materials such as wood, foam, and honeycomb Nomex are often used, and these are covered in great detail. All the relevant tools, including mixing containers, holding containers, saws, scissors, files, and shaping tools, are discussed. The book also reveals how to construct wood patterns to exacting standards from wood, Formica, aluminum, and other materials. A wide range of fabrication and repair projects are included, such as laying up basic fiberglass, repairing cracks and holes, creating a buck/mold, making molds for dashboards, repairing plastic spoilers, and much more. This is the one book to guide you through each critical stage of repairing or building many functional fiberglass parts for your collector or high-performance car.

Great resource
By Jerry F. Boone
A great resource for both the newcomer and the veteran. Over the years I've tackled a number of fiberglass race and street cars and figured I knew most everything there was to know on the subject. The authors introduced me to a couple of techniques I hadn't considered and at least one product I had never run across...and the book was a great review of much of the basics I often don't consider when I start o project. The details and photo work are first rate, and the information is well-written and easy to understand.

The book is a very good read for an introduction into fiberglassing and what materials are available. It provides a lot of basic information and some generalization on how to accomplish certain fiberglassing repairs and techniques. It does have tutorials, but I feel like it is lacking in them. It takes you through a step by step guide with pictures, but then leaves out the final images to show you what the outcome is. I was hoping for a more in-depth read, but I am still glad I bought it. Definitely a good reference book for anyone interested in learning to fiberglass.

one of the better books on this subject
By salty dawg
1st - you have to be able to work with materials and use the appropriate safety protection equipment before doing any fabrication - this book was very helpful as a basic primer on the subject - I have read several books and this was quite well done and illustrated.
