About the Author

Claudia Roden was born and brought up in Cairo. She finished her education in Paris and later studied art in London. She now lives in London. Roden writes about food with a special interest in the social and historical back-ground of cooking. Her books include The Book of Jewish Food, which won eight international awards, as well as The New Book of Middle Eastern Food, Arabesque, Coffee: A Connoisseur's Companion, The Food of Italy: Region by Region, Everything Tastes Better Outdoors, and Mediterranean Cookery. In 1989 she won Italy's two most prestigious food prizes, the Premio Orio Vergani and the Premio Maria Luigia, Duchessa di Parma. She has also won six Glenfiddich awards.

With 600 pages and a very general title, the book sets the expectations very high. Is the author able to deliver?

The hyperbole in the product description calls this book one of the most important books on Spanish cooking during the last 50 years. How does the book measure up? I own a number of Spanish cooking books, so in addition to comments on Roden's book, please also find my recommendations.

This is a decent book about traditional Spanish food, but it lacks the passion so apparent in The New Spanish Table (or for that matter the author's own The New Book of Middle Eastern Food). I think you learn more about Spanish food by reading that book, because its informal and youthful style (i.e. cramped with info, side bars, inserts, loads of smaller less artistic photos). Off course, if you want to learn about the Spanish regions and their specialities, you should pick up Culinaria Spain. However, Roden does teach us a bit about the strong early Muslim influence as well as the different regions. Roden's history lesson is largely confined to pre 20th century. Unfortunately, you do not get any understanding of how Spanish cooking has changed during the last 50 years. Another solid book that tries to do pretty much what Roden is trying to do is The Cuisines of Spain: Exploring Regional Home Cooking - a much better choice (more focused description of regional differences, more recipes, regional origin of all recipes noted).

The book is too designed by the publisher for my liking; e.g. lots of professional photos (but why a brown tinting on all of them?), big white spaces (who came up with the silly idea of having 3-4 cm margins??), and very safe recipes. This would be a good gift to a more conservative person that likes food a bit toned down, but still nice. (In contrast, the first book mentioned above would be a good gift to a more passionate person who just likes to cook.) I am not trying to belittle Roden's book, but cooking is more fun with passion (e.g. Andres's Made in Spain: Spanish Dishes for the American Kitchen or his DVD. Check him out on youtube if you are not familiar with him.)

I am also disappointed by having only 180 recipes in a book of 600 pages. The book has a lot of intro text so the comparison isn't totally fair, but still pretty fair. There is just too much fluff in this book. Compare with the author's early book on Middle Eastern food having 800 recipes on 500 pages. Also many of the recipes are too basic, like chicken stock, aioli and mayonnaise. Those recipes should be put at the end and not given full page treatment. Alternatively, more detail could have been provided; e.g. how pestle and mortar makes the sauce different, how to make it without eggs. Things need to be taken to the next level.

I don't think this book is directed to people who love to cook. There are just too many short-cuts described (e.g. doing aioli with bought mayo) and the author giving approval to all these short cuts (probably on request of the publisher). Also, the recipes do not contain any tips of how to really get the best out of the ingredients. The recipes are very straightforward, all additional complexity removed. Some people might like this approach but somebody who loves to cook would like to know the details that lead to perfection and an enlarged skill set.

If you want more recipes per page I would suggest the books by Penelope Casas. Probably best to start with her first book The Foods and Wines of Spain, which will contain the classics. Her Delicioso! The Regional Cooking of Spain and La Cocina de Mama: The Great Home Cooking of Spain follow the same style. (I am not familiar with her subsequent books). Her recipes are a little bit more traditional in preparation, but the author is not Spanish and she is very careful in spicing the dishes. Compare with The New Spanish Table that is not afraid of spicing the dishes. I don't know who is closer to the "original" if there is an original.

Finally, I do not recommend 1080 Recipes unless you want a book written for Spanish housewives

Spanish Cooking at Home Plus a Great Travelogue

Claudia Roden's breakthrough book, 'A Book of Middle Eastern Food' was not only a landmark work on one of my favorite cuisines, it was also a wonderful reminiscence of Roden's family history as Sephardic Jews who settled in Egypt. For Sephardic, read 'Spanish' and her credibility as a writer on this Mediterranean cuisine becomes clear. The first 120 plus pages contain a region-by-region overview of Spain's multi-ethnic food culture, ranging from signature agricultural products to 'bred in the bone' dishes. I very much agree with previous reviewers that the recipes she has selected accord well with what I have eaten and enjoyed during my travels in Spain. I also feel that this is the best overall book for a Spanish family (speaking English fluently) to select for their own cookbook. The great dishes, the expected dishes are here--from a homemade range of stocks through soups...well, to nuts! Famed convent-based recipes for egg and almond pastry 'bites' are here. We all have had them and we all have wished we 'knew how' to recreate them at home. Now we can! We can also share a thumbnail sketch of each region's history, their hopes for independence or autonomy or their roles in creating today's vibrant, modern Spain.

Why only four stars? I cook seriously (as does Roden)but I may be a bit 'jaded', a bit more interested in 'knockout' recipe and flavor or texture ideas. This book is wonderfully traditional. Her prose is not as rigorously edited as it used to be and there are some repetitions that pall on the careful reader.

Roden has also become a culinary 'goddess' by dint of her unremitting hard work and her text has acquired a bit of baggage: she is modest enough to feel she needs to recognize all the people in Spain who have helped her along the way and through the years. Notable names are dropped but there are also magic moments when she recognizes, for example, the president of a local gastronomic society of men, a man of humble origins but of enormous self-study and acheivement and a man of noble hospitality. 'Visiting' good people who love good food is one of the pleasures served up by this book; a pleasure seldom found elsewhere.

Obviously, I had to add this book to my collection and I feel you won't be sorry to do the same. For those who are seeking something a bit less ambitious and a bit more path-breaking, may I suggest Jose Andres' works 'Made in Spain' or 'Tapas?' The dishes he offers make me want to get in the kitchen and cook something for dinner tonight!

This is why Claudia Roden is one of my favorite cookbook writers

This book is basically everything that makes a Claudia Roden book -- personal stories, history, and much more -- combined with some truly beautiful Phaidonesque food photography. It's a doorstop, no question, but it's worth trying to schlep it around just to be able to browse through it. The recipes are all marked by area of origin, and are chosen to reflect each area's specialties, such as Valencia's rice, seafood from Cantabria, the Basque country, and the Balearic Islands, Asturias' apples, and Madrid's signature boiled dinner, the cocido madrile�o.

The aesthetics are an important aspect of this book; while the text itself is probably about the same or slightly shorter than Roden's other books, the book as a whole was conceived as a coffee table book, with generous (and obviously Phaidon-influenced) food photography. Roden's friends who helped her with the book also get their own introductions in sidebars, along with ingredients and cultural forces that shaped Spanish food from medieval into modern times. (Roden, being Sephardic Jewish, places special emphasis on the Jewish contributions to the cuisine, and makes a special point to cover how Spain has come to appreciate centuries of contributions by Jews and Conversos.)

For a long time -- over twenty-five years now -- Penelope Casas' The Foods and Wines of Spain has been possibly the definitive book in English on Spanish food. It's still an excellent book, but in the years since Casas published her first book, Spanish food has rocketed to worldwide fame as the youngest of Europe's great national cuisines, joining French, Italian, and Greek food thanks to the efforts of both traditionalists and modernists. I don't know that I'd say Roden's book replaces Casas', but the simple fact of it being so far up to date as well as being artistically beautiful just edges out Casas as the book to buy if you're only buying one. (I own both, and I'd suggest you do too, along with 1080 Recipes, which was written in Spain for Spanish cooks, but received a very nice, slightly quirky treatment from Phaidon.) But even if you don't care about any of the above, Claudia Roden is one of the Anglophone food world's great treasures, and frankly a new book by her is really all the excuse you need.

About the Author
Former Staff Sergeant Clinton L. Romesha enlisted in the Army in 1999. He deployed twice to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, and once to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. At the time of the deadly attack on Combat Outpost (COP) Keating on Oct. 3, 2009, Staff Sgt. Romesha was assigned as a section leader for Bravo Troop, 3-61st Cavalry, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division. He is the recipient of numerous awards and decorations, including the Medal of Honor, which has been received by only 12 others for the heroism they displayed while serving in Iraq or Afghanistan. Romesha separated from the Army in 2011. He lives with his family in North Dakota.

Outstanding retelling of a terrible event

Red Platoon, like all such books of the USA's recent conflicts, was a tough read. I expect the prior generation had much the same feeling regarding books about the Vietnam War. Perhaps I simply know too many men and women who've fought in these conflicts. Either way, the books is fantastic.

Red Platoon first introduces the NCOs and officers of the platoon. Most of them were veterans of either Iraq of Afghanistan already, though few had been assigned to the same unit prior to being sent to COP Keating. COP Keating is accurately described as a wretched folly, mainly because of its completely indefensible position. When the members of Red Platoon arrive, ostensibly to shut down the base, they immediately realize their predicament.

Constant harassing by the Taliban confirmed the platoon's worst fears. They were literally vulnerable from every angle, and being at the bottom of the valley allowed the insurgents to target them with almost no risk of harm themselves. Red Platoon, along with White and Blue Platoons, settled into a sort of rhythm. They came to regard the steady attacks as just part of the routine of COP Keating. However, when a determined, large Taliban force some 300-strong decided to assault the outpost directly, it came as a terrible surprise. The men of Keating were outnumbered nearly 5:1, and the enemy applied the lessons they'd learned from all their minor attacks to focus on the defensive positions. The sudden attack put even these professional soldiers on their heels. The immediate collapse of the allied Afghan forces aided the enemy greatly. Once the insurgents penetrated the base itself, the men of Keating had to fall back to the Alamo.

This is not an easy read in terms of the subject matter. The almost clinical recounting pulls no punches. There is proper scorn heaped on those who established the outpost in the first place, especially for the reasons noted by the author. The situation regarding support and supply for the remote outpost makes it clear that the men of Keating were all but on their own. The thought is rather chilling, and one can hardly imagine that feeling. The author relates the last moments of many of those who were killed, some by snipers, some by heavy firepower concentrated by large numbers of Taliban.

The book is a fast read, but it's one to slow down intentionally while reading to absorb the impact of each stage of the battle. As an account of the events that culminated in the author receiving the Medal of Honor, this is a wonderful book for military supporters and those with loved ones in the military.

Engrossing tale of men under fire

Clinton Romesha’s “Red Platoon” is a compelling and engrossing story of a true event: the attack on his platoon’s position at an outpost in Afghanistan, a fight that resulted in his own award of the Medal of Honor.

In the spirit of “Lone Survivor”, “Black Hawk Down” and “American Sniper”, this true story is masterfully written and compelling, keeping this reader fully engaged from first page to last.

Combat Outpost Keating was a disaster waiting to happen. It was poorly situated, being near the bottom of a valley dominated by looming escarpments, and very close to a small village that provided potential staging points for the opposition. It was at the end of a very difficult supply route, and in a position that didn’t allow for dependable air or artillery support. Some of the base security was provided by undependable indigenous personnel, primarily Afghani police forces.

When Black Knight Troop, the outfit which included Romesha’s Red Platoon, rotated in the decision had been made to dismantle the outpost and shut it down. But before this mission could be carried out the Taliban staged an attack in force. As the outpost was already partially dismantled, its defenders found themselves hampered not only by their position’s innate vulnerabilities, but also by virtue of the position no longer being at full capability, making their situation even more dire.

Their battle against seemingly insurmountable odds and overwhelming force will keep you turning the pages until the last chopper flies out.

I’d also like to extend my respect to Romesha, as well as those other Keating defenders mentioned in the book who performed so nobly and bravely. Outstanding.

An Excellent Book for All of Us!

This is not a political book - and that is a good thing. As a former Marine myself, I found this book to be the kind of story that could be told over and over again in different battles in different wars. It is about the people who serve, the ones who volunteer to protect our country and the horrors that they often have to endure when they do so.

Very few of the soldiers, sailors, airman and Marines ever face combat. Most people in the military go through their tour of duty never even firing a bullet at the enemy. Nonetheless, they face that possibility no matter what position you may be in. What most military people don't know is how they will react when they are hit hard by an enemy force. For the people in this book, they don't have to question that any longer. They know how they will respond - and did - with bravery and courage.

The best of America serves in the military and it amounts to about 1% of the country's population. It is that crucial 1% that allows all of us to go about our daily lives not having to endure what they endure. If you want an idea of what they endure, however, this is an excellent book to read and is well-written. No matter what you politics are, or even whether or not you supported the war in Afghanistan, this book will help you understand what it takes to defend our country and the scars it leaves that never go away.

I highly recommend this book for all Americans, especially civilians. It will open your eyes about how we are kept safe in the world.

Energy Experiments Really Work

Several months ago I heard an advertisement for this book while listening to Hay House Radio. My immediate response was, "I need that book!" Being the book junkie that I am though, it isn't (currently) in my budget to buy every book that sounds interesting to me. So I looked it up at the library. No copies. Drat!

Several weeks later, I spontaneously found myself browsing the Hay House site and came up on their blogger community. That, I now realize, was miracle #1. This community allows bloggers to receive copies of certain books for free in exchange for a review posted to the blogger's website. I signed up for the program and received the book just a few days later.

If you're into spirituality, the power of intention, quantum physics, or anything along those lines, you would love this book. It's absolutely perfect for the person who has done extended reading on the topics (me!) but can't manage to move beyond the feeling of being stuck. Sure you may come up on a little proof of the Universe working in your favor now and then, but it's soon forgotten and sucked into the void of feeling like you have no power over your life.

This book provided me with the necessary guidance I needed to truly know that my thoughts have power through 9 cut and dry exercises. The best part is, Ms. Pam Grout is writes in a language that is accessible, humorous and the very opposite of boring. The lessons are concise, to the point, and best of all - offer NO ROOM FOR QUESTIONING. At the end of each experiment you KNOW that God heard your plea.

When it all boils down to it, what these experiments aim to do is solidify our faith. You either believe or you don't. You can't be wishy washy and that's where most of us get stuck. You also can't send mixed signals... Like, "I really want to lose weight, but I also really want to have 10 pieces of chocolate cake today." You have to be honest with yourself about what you really want. That's the other place where we get stuck. We don't truly know what we want.

Through practicing the experiments in this book, you can begin to hone in on what it is you're truly asking for. As Grout states, begin with simple things first. Some things take longer than others. Don't expect to become a millionaire over night. Also, keep your eyes and intuition open. You have to recognize that your question and desires have been answered. Sometimes the answers don't come the way you wanted, or expected. Most important of all though, is don't waiver in your belief. Most spiritual traditions teach this critical element and now it's backed up by science. The observer creates and changes the observed. It's true.

Finally, just to prove to you that I'm not just writing this for naught, I will share two stories about thoughts/things I manifested while going through the experiments in this book. The first one comes in the form of a Needak rebounder (a mini trampoline). I've wanted one for several years, and have had a cheap one in the past, that only lasted me about two months. I had only been reading E-Squared for a couple of hours when suddenly the word "rebounder" popped into my mind. A few minutes later I was on Craigslist where, lo and behold, someone was selling two Needak rebounders for half of their original price. I have NEVER seen a Needak on Craigslist in all the years I've been looking for one.

I now own the rebounder. And, just to add to the delight of the story, it's worth noting that the person I bought it from - the complete and total Craigslist stranger - was also very much into miracles, Wayne Dyer and other things along this course. She even had the words, "I am entitled to miracles" written on her forearm. There's no denying God in this equation.

The second example is a little more subtle. I happened to drop my camera right on it's lens in the middle of my son's birthday party. I had experienced trouble with the lens before and tried everything I could to fix it. I couldn't. I was sure that this was it for my poor little camera, which I actually use for one of my jobs. Drat again! A little later in the day, one of the chapters was guiding me to manifest something specific, immediately my mind told me what I wanted, "a camera!"

A few minutes later I found myself on YouTube looking up instructions on how to fix my camera. Even though I had already given up on it. I pretty much thought I was about to take it apart and really ruin it. Instead I came up on a simple tutorial that said to slap the camera on your palm and gently guide the lens out. Can you believe this worked? Suddenly the lens that was absolutely stuck and would not move a millimeter was working just fine. I had a camera again. Sure, it wasn't a new camera, but I gave the Universe 48 hours to give me a camera and I had one within 30 minutes. I accepted it with gratitude.

Please don't think that the only thing you can manifest are material objects. These examples are important because we like to be able to see things physically. But we can also use this book to ask for guidance and to help manifest peace and love in our hearts - that's where the real power lies. Like I said before, it's really about cultivating and maintaining faith. So yeah, read this book. I got it for free, but if I knew then what I know now, I would have gladly paid for it. Loved the experiments

E Squared by Pam Grout

Pam Grout is my new favorite author. I enjoyed reading this book so much that I would love to read and know more from her. E Squared is easy to read, fun, all the ideas are scientifically supported, credible and something that sets this book apart from the others is that Pam gives us experiments to prove that our thoughts really do create our reality. I tried the experiments, and I was blown away by most results I had; this is my experience:

Experiment #1 The Dude Abides Principle: I got a ticket to see Eckhat Tolle and Deepak Chopra at the Chopra Center in Carlsbad, California. How cool is that!!

Experiment #2 The Volkswagen Jetta: I didn't see any sunset-beige cars, but I saw lots of yellow butterflies while watching Baby Einstein with my kids.

Experiment #3 The Alby Einstein: I got rid of all my wire hangers in my last Spring Cleaning, so I couldn't do this experiment.

Experiment #4 The Abracadabra: What I learned from this experiment is that you have to be specific when asking for something to manifest. I focused on getting $ 5,000 but I didn't specify if I wanted them in cash of check, so what I got was a spam e-mail with a picture of lots of bills a huge sign " Win $ 5,000" in the bottom of the e-mail.

Experiment #5 The Dear Abby: I asked God and my Angels for guidance on how to make my business more succesful, and what I got at the next morning was a bunch of creative ideas, and something made me yell YES!!

Experiment #6 The Super Hero: Haven't started this experiment yet.

Experiment #7 The Jenny Craig: I lost 1 pound by just thinking every zip of water would clean my organism.

Experiment #8 The 101 Dalmatians: The friend I was thinking about and sending lots of blessings and happiness, rarely posts comments in Facebook, however at the second day of my experiment, she posted a picture of her beautiful growing vegetable garden and expressed how happy she was about it. That same night I was watching a movie and it turned out it was filmed in Verona,Italy; the city this friend is from.

Experiment #9 The Fish and Loaves: My favorite gesture of gratitude was a little happy dance a homeless man did when I gave him a dollar bill in my way to work.

E-squared. Read it...Reality is waiting!

You know those movies, or concerts, that are just so fab that time disappears and it seems like they only last for ten minutes and you just wish they would never stop?

Well this was the book version of that. If I have one criticism it's that it is not long enough.

What's it about?

In a nutshell.....the law of attraction baby! And yes, I KNOW we have heard so much about this recently, and there are SO many books on the topic that all started to get popular due to that infamous little title The Secret. But if the law of attraction is such an easy concept to master, wouldn't we would all be manifesting millions and have lives of our dreams? well I don't know about you, but for the majority of people, this just isn't happening.

Why not?

Well, for a start, it's because deep down inside, we really don't believe that it's possible. And this disbelief is preventing what we say we want from forming a place in reality. We put out messages that we want, say, a pony, but then at the same time we are thinking that it's probably not going to happen. And thus the net result is NOTHING.

Pam Grout takes this disbelief and helps you shove it to the side for enough time to show you that the law of attraction works. Like, seriously. And in a pretty neat way too. She has a way of taking complicated concepts and explaining them in a humorous, totally easy to understand manner. Works for me, especially with the attention-span of a child with ADD...

The key to the success of this book are that there are actual real-life experiments to do, to not only get some of the stuff you really want, but to prove to YOURSELF that this whole thoughts becoming reality stuff works. Of course, I was skeptical to start with... I always thought that this stuff only happened sometimes, and more for other people (you know, the rich, successful ones featured in The Secret) than for me.

But. Enter experiment number One: The Dude Abides Principle. Basically here - after Pam has not only convinced you to give it a try but really really got you wanting to very very badly - you ask the energy force for a blessing, just to let you know it is actually there. Yes I got one! Of course I did....

Well, you say, this could just be coincidence. But time after time, experiment after experiment, she pulled me in and the energy force delivered. I got ACTUAL REAL-LIFE things that I asked for.

If you have any inclination toward this at all, or if you are a massive skeptic, or if you just want to laugh out loud,... I highly recommend this book.

And uh - be careful what you wish for!!

Fabrication Layout

Not what I was looking for, it is terribly outdated and tedious and extremely overpriced. Years ago I used a layouts made easy book when I worked in the loft in a very large ironworks shop back in the 1970's. I thought that was what I was purchasing or something very similar, a book that simplified everything, that gave you the various geometric formulas and made making something like a square to round frustrum or simple as a cone into a childs project. This was not it. Everything is lay'd out in a series of triangles of various sizes. Would not buy it again or recommend it, I would throw it away but it cost too much, makes a great paperweight.

About the Author
Wayne L. Winston is Professor Emeritus of Decision Sciences at the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University and is now a Professor of Decision and Information Sciences at the Bauer College at the University of Houston. He has won more than 45 teaching awards, including the school-wide MBA award six times. His current interest is in showing how spreadsheet models can be used to solve business problems in all disciplines, particularly in finance, sports, and marketing. In addition to publishing more than 20 articles in leading journals, Dr. Winston has written such successful textbooks as OPERATIONS RESEARCH: APPLICATIONS AND ALGORITHMS, MATHEMATICAL PROGRAMMING: APPLICATIONS AND ALGORITHMS, SIMULATION MODELING WITH @RISK, DATA ANALYSIS FOR MANAGERS, SPREADSHEET MODELING AND APPLICATIONS, MATHLETICS, DATA ANALYSIS AND BUSINESS MODELING WITH EXCEL 2013, MARKETING ANALYTICS, and FINANCIAL MODELS USING SIMULATION AND OPTIMIZATION. I have completed my Bachelor's degree in Mathematics and Statistics without a little knowledge about Optimization. Fortunately, I came across this book. This book has played a big role by creating for me a career in Operations Research. It contains many industrial problems to demonstrate the usefulness of the subject. This is one of the excellent industrial engineering books. From deterministic and simple linear programming to stochastic systems such as queueing models or dynamic programming, you may read and "learn" lots of things about OR. However, for stochastic cases you will need extra help for its matematics. But if you want to learn something about industrial engineering or something related with it, that is the book you must buy.

difficult subject - but a Must read

Daniel's story is one of tragedy and inspiration. The book drew me in and I could not put it down! It captured the emotions and feelings skillfully. The book brings you on a roller coaster ride of anguish to anger to frustration to hope. If you have children or love children, please read this. We all need to be aware of the insidious nature of bullying and realize WE need to take a stand to keep the momentum rolling that the Mendez family and Cool to be Kind (C2BK) clubs have started.

This is a heart wrenching, and heart warming, journey through a family's ordeal. For anyone who is a parent, or knows a parent, this book will open your eyes to the unfortunate reality that our children face every day. It is a story of tragedy, reality and ultimately hope for the future of our kids. I have, and will continue to, pass this story along to as many people as I can.

Please read this amazing but sad story!!!

This was a well written book and so emotionally gripping. I read this in less than 5 days as I was completely drawn into every detail. Some of it was very hard to read as you feel the torture that Daniel experienced as well as his family after his passing. Every parent should read this to understand what our children may be up against on a daily basis. Bullying is a very real thing and as a society there must be no tolerance for this disguisting behavior. The schools need to wake up and make this a priority and protect our children at whatever cost---no exceptions, no excuses. I admire the families strength during the depositions as well as the tenacity of his friend Aiden. Please read this book and pass it on to your friends and family. Spread the word, be an advocate for our kids!! That is what Daniel and his family are asking.

Don't waste your valuable time

Talk about stating the obvious. I do not think there is a new or innovative thought in this whole book. If you've been in sales, marketing, or any business function for that matter, you should already know everything in this book. Now, I know that there are very few new ideas in this world. I like to read business books and usually learn something I didn't know. When I don't learn something I didn't know, I usually still enjoy the reminders, as we all lose focus from time to time. However, this book was so dull and the content so obvious that it didn't educate me OR invigorate me. It completely fell flat.

I thought that the pictures were super fun and whimsical

Grade one Phonics Early Learning Skills is a book published by Speedy Publishing and sold through Baby Professor on Amazon. This book is essentially an alphabet book. Each page has a letter and along with the letter it shows an animal that begins with that letter sound. I thought that the pictures were super fun and whimsical, some of the animals, especially the hippopotamus, had me cracking up with their human like expressions and poses.

I did have some issues with the animals that they chose. For instance they used giraffe for g. My preference would have been for the author to use a word that had the /g/ sound at the beginning that is used most frequently instead of the soft /g/ in giraffe. A goat may have been a better choice for a book focusing on phonics for young children. N is for neandrathal is just, well, that is just something else isn't it? I was actually confused why the book had 2 monkeys in a row, but then I looked more carefully and found that gem.

At the end there is a list of words for children to practice reading on their own.

All in all I thought this was a cute and quirky book.

First of all, you can click on "Look Inside" on the main product page of Amazon and see the first few pages of this book. That should help you decide if this book is for you. What you see is what you get pretty much. If you can snag this book for free I think it's a good deal if you are in the market for this kind of book but honestly I wouldn't pay for it.

I believe this Baby Professor book could easily be for younger kids. I could see 3 year olds liking this book and even 2 year olds.

That being said, this ebook is very basic and nothing earth shattering. I would've been very disappointed if I had paid even just .99� for this ebook. I will leave this book on my iPad for a friends daughter that I sometimes watch at sibling sporting events. I thing she will enjoy this book as a 3 year old.

Here is my review for other Baby Professor ebooks in case you are in the market for non-phonic books. There are about 200 books in this ebook series that are offered in the kindle store for either free or for .99�. There is a variety of subjects covered (like travel, transportation, animals, etc.) and most of the books follow about the same format. They usually have a picture on one page and a short paragraph with facts about the subject, then on the next page is usually just a picture. The pictures are usually quite vivid impressive but the information is normally lacking. You can take a peek inside the books by clicking "Look Inside" and this is pretty much what you get in each book.

Overall, I do like theses books for their wonderful pictures. It would be nice if the books went into more detail but they are very basic books that I hope will get my kids interested in finding more about each subject. I think there is only 2 books that I didn't keep on my iPad, the 2nd grade phonics book and the creepy stories book. All the ebooks were offered for free to everyone at various times.

I plan on keeping most of these books on my iPad for down time for my kids when they get bored waiting different places like the doctors office or practice for a sibling. I sometimes watch a friends 3 year old daughter and she likes to look through the pictures on my phone. I plan on showing her these books to keep her entertained. I think she will love them.

Kid liked it, I could take it or leave it.

I made this purchase with the intention of my son enjoying it, and he did. When I asked him his opinion, he said "I liked it" so I gave it 4 stars. When I opened it, I noticed the colors seem somewhat muted, they could have been bolder and brighter, especially for attempting to entice a wiggly little boy to sit and read it. It is your normal A is for, B is for, but with a twist. The animals are not what you would expect, and I am having mixed feelings about that part. I think it is good because it is something different, and because my son is so used to these books, he was just reciting from memory the animals instead of reading the pages, so it forced him to pay more attention to the words and not just the animals on the pages. The thing I didn't like about it, is that some of the animals he has never heard of, and cannot pronounce and that frustrated him quite a bit. For example, X is for xenops (it shows a bird), I myself would have to google that one. At the end of the book it has a rundown of just the word and the animal or thing, and not the whole alphabet. A lot of the words are words my son already knows, so it was sort of a confidence booster at the end, which will make him want to try again,and I liked that. All in all, I would give it 3 stars, but rated it 4 because my son likes it, and it was for him. It is currently free and I was provided it to me for free so I could review it, so I am happy enough with it. I would not buy it on paperback or spend more than a buck or two on it for my Kindle though. It was an automatic download so I got to sit down right away and read it with my son. It being on an electronic device (my phone) makes it convenient to read with him anywhere, and I like that. I attempted to take a screen shot since the photos in the book aren't as bright as the cover, but I cannot get it to work on my phone.

*It is on my phone, so convenient for reading anywhere at anytime

Cons
*I wish the pictures were brighter and bolder
*Some of the words are above a first grader level, which can kill confidence and ruin a book, OR create a challenge your kid will want to overcome, it could go either way.
