Zeke, now incarcerated in the Portland Youth Center, isolated and sulky, withdraws. Dr. Elizabeth Proctor, his appointed psychologist, convinces him to begin writing in a journal. Something strange happens - Zeke begins to open up. In it, he gradually reveals the events that led up to the fires, his feelings about life in Chaldea, and the family anxieties that burden him. Zeke immerses himself in his journal. Only when his parents allow two staff members from his old high school, a former English teacher and the school librarian, to help him work on his writing, does Zeke begin to catch a glimpse of what he has done and who he is.

Zeke's first person musings are balanced nicely by third person storytelling

Kindling is a powerful novel, its narrative weaving in and out of the consciousness of its main character, adolescent pyromaniac Zeke Titcomb. As Zeke explores his obsession with fire and his revulsion against the inhabitants of his hometown in rural Maine, the town reels--in the quiet, stoic ways that only a small, northern New England town can--from several cases of arson that seem to target them all. Zeke's first person musings are balanced nicely by third person storytelling, the tensions between which make for a gripping reading experience. Not all is discovered and not all is told, even to the teacher and librarian who, along with their poetry, are the only lifelines Zeke considers accessing. The characters are real, and the story is spun without regard to politeness or pandering.

In his first foray into fiction, poet David Cappella deftly takes the reader through the dense natural landscape and cultural contours of a rural New England town. His ear for the local patois is finely honed, and his disturbing insights are conveyed with great humor and great heart. This surprisingly complex multi-layered coming of age narrative burns bright with the possibility that literature can be redeeming--for both the novel's protagonist and the reader. Ultimately 'Kindling' reminds us that we are all tasked with tending(& tempering)an inner fire.

Certainly not a YA novel! Cappella crafts rich characters who come to life on every page. I COULD NOT PUT THIS BOOK DOWN due to such vivid description and detail. I could literally "see" the uplanders. While the crime creates the suspense, it is the cast of character, and the setting itself, that takes center stage and hooks the reader. This book is powerful on many levels. The redemption of the human spirit being one of them. Read this book and see for yourself.

There are many components to conflict and this book provides a host of tools and insights that will help the reader learn to successfully work with conflict. There are so many different kinds of conflicts at work that it's probably impossible to write a book with scenarios that resonate with everyone. It's also impossible to resolve all conflicts at work, so when reading books like this I try to figure out whether there's enough new information that I can apply to my job. After reading the book, I feel it was worth my time.

A top-notch O'Reilly book for front-end devs.

Frontend Architecture for Design Systems: A Modern Blueprint for Scalable and Sustainable Websites is a top-notch O'Reilly book. The author, Micah Godbolt, does a great job covering a somewhat complex topic surrounding the 3 primary CSS design methodologies: OOCSS, SMACSS, and BEM. He covers each method in detail with a wide-array of graphic illustrations and screenshot examples but does spend majority of the book on his own blend of SMACSS and BEM, which as a front-end dev myself, found very applicable for my work with PHP-based CMS solutions. Regardless of what front-end framework you deal with, this book will spark all kinds of new ideas and help you expand your own reach with CSS.

Solid for Intermediates, Annoying for Seniors

This is a solid read for someone needing to make sense of the "Why" of the current CSS landscape. For those experts who've already been doing this, it provides a solid summary without being too annoying.
Not a fan of the writing style. In fact, I feel that this editor failed their author. I'm not sure who's at fault for the divisive rants, needless paragraphs and all-around immaturity. Although this might be a marketing strategy to get at front-end developers who don't have broad industry experience.
The first half of this book is really close our CSS interview. The second half is how Red Hat derived their own Pattern Lab. And for all the talk of JSON Schema, I feel that this book didn't do enough to demonstrate the connection of JSON that ran through the view templates back through to the APIs. A larger architecture diagram of the final version might have helped here.

Not a how-to manual

This manual is a textbook for aquatic instructors. It assumes they have participated in the YMCA aquatic training and certification program and will use this manual to tailor classes to meet their student's needs. Part I is an overview of the Parent/Child and Preschool Aquatic Program. Part II is devoted to the Parent/Child Program and discusses parent involvement, how to work with the children, skill development and lesson planning. Part III is devoted to the Preschool Program and discusses lesson planing, how to teach character development and specific skill development for the Pike and Eel levels and Ray and Starfish levels. The Appendix lists aquatic program guidelines for children under the age of three and gives activities, games and songs that will make the learning fun.
I bought the Parent/Child and Preschool Manual because I knew that the YMCA had a successful Aquatic Program and I wanted to use their method to teach my son to swim at home. I was expecting a how-to manual or at least an outline of exercises that would teach swimming fundamentals but I found neither. For this reason I rate this book 1 star. Its target audience would more than likely rate it more favorably.

Wonderful..

I am a swim instructor for the YMCA and there is no better swimming instruction program on the planet. We are the leading swim instruction program in the USA and I am so glad to be part of this industry. This book better equips me to teach preschoolers and their parents how to learn the basics of swimming. If your looking for a how to book, it will not fulfill that need. Place your child in swim lessons at a Y to recieve the full benefits of this program.
